Prayers Needed Please - UPDATED with good news!

Hi guys, I don't normally post this type of stuff on a message board, but I know this is a smaller community and I know the people here are good and truly do care.

One of my good friends collapsed and went into cardiac arrest last Thursday night while on a walk with another friend. Our friend who was with her was able to flag down a passing car for help. They administered CPR until the paramedics arrived and transported her to the hospital.

Doctors have been unable to determine the cause, but they have ruled out a heart attack, brain aneursym, and illicit drugs. Right now they are thinking it could have been an arrhythmia.

Regardless, she was without air for at least 4 minutes and now has aspirational phneumonia from vomitting during her convulsions. Following her intubation at the hospital, she was placed in a drug-induced coma to minimize further damage to the brain.

The doctors have since been trying to get her off the ventilator, but the pneumonia and fact that she has a very weak heart (she has a congenital heart problem that required open heart surgery as a young child) is greatly hindering this process. Right now they have placed her in a deeper coma to allow her to rest for a few days before they make a last ditch extubation attempt whereupon the doctors can check whether she has any brain function.

Unfortunately things look quite bleak at the moment and we are all devastated at the likelihood of losing her. Of course the doctors are staying upbeat on the prognosis as this is regular protocol until all options have been investigated...but I know deep down if this extubation attempt doesn't work the doctors are going to start talking "reality" to her husband and rest of her family.

Anyway, if you are so compelled, would you please keep my friend in your prayers? She is such a wonderful, vibrant, young 29 y/o woman and this is just so unbelievably unfair; all we want is to just have her back with us. This is just so devastating and I don't want her husband or family having to make the agonizing decision of pulling her off life support in the near future. So if you can, please keep her, her husband, and her family in your prayers.

I am so sorry to hear that Katie. I worked as a CCU nurse for 6 years and I have seen families and loved ones go through this experience. I will tell you that I have seen amazing things happen more than once - I've seen patients more or less written off by doctors and medical staff, that recovered and shocked everyone. I will think good thoughts for your friend and her family. Hang in there. One thing I always tried to share with my patient's loved ones during discussions about advanced life support and whether to continue or to withdraw it was that when someone is in that critical a state, whether they pull through somehow or pass on, it isn't dependent on a ventilator, or pacemaker, or IV drugs. Those things can help a patient hold on, but ultimately, it's a greater force than some machine that is at work. I really hope your friend pulls through.

I'm really sorry to hear of this Katie. As with Boone, I've seen some truly incredible recoveries over the years so try to stay as positive as possible given the circumstances. Even though I'm not the praying type, please know you and your friend's family are in my thoughts.

Thank-you guys for the kind thoughts and prayers sent out to Michelle and her family. I really do appreciate it, and I know her family does too. It really stinks to be so far away from her and not able to visit her, but I know I would just be in the way. She and the family have a great support system in place down there and my roommate's been there everyday reading the cards and letters we are all sending.

Well, I wanted to update the case for those you who expressed good wishes and prayers for my friend who has been in a coma for the last two weeks...she woke up today!! After 2 weeks in a coma, she opened her eyes, looked at her mom, husband, and my roommate while they were talking to her and squeezed all of their hands individually!!!

Doctors still do not know what caused the cardiac arrest that led to her coma, but they suspect it was caused by an arrhythmia that was not related to her congenital heart problems (she's had 4 open heart surgeries to date). They've called in her original heart doctor who is one of the premier heart surgeons in the world and many other specialists to follow her case and aide in her recovery. She still has a long way to go and lots of prayers and good thoughts still needed, but we are all so happy with with her recovery so far. Anyway, I just wanted to put an update out there for everyone here who offered their kind words of support and prayers for my friend!

Thanks guys. Just thought I'd update the nice people on here who expressed their kind words of support for my friend. It's been such a rollercoaster of emotions...we were all just so happy and jumping around and crying last night; I was telling the good news to anyone willing to listen...and even if they didn't want to listen, I was going to tell them anyway!

A few years ago, June Jones was in a car accident that might have ended his life or left him a warm veggie for life. He had just started turning around the UH Warrior football team.
The whole state of Hawaii prayed for Coach Jones and he experienced a miraculous recovery and went on to liberally shower second chances on future football stars like Colt and Davone Bess.

We in Hawaii have always counted on the power of prayer. It is part of our culture - and we give thanks pretty much before all events. No separation of spirit and state here.

;-)
