I'll be out and become a Browns fan. If I'm going to suffer with a team I won't be doing it with one that panders to one race while acting like it's wrong as well.

Not sure who my backup team would be. Being stationed in Missouri the chief games at arrowhead were pretty fun. But Mahomes brain damaged little brother literally prevents rooting for them imo.

I don’t really get the objection…. It would simply be honoring the military service of African Americans…what’s objectionable or controversial about that? I don’t really see that as some kind of ‘woke’ move. The contributions of African Americans in our military have never been recognized adequately imho.

I do think it would be a little different to rename a football team in order to accomplish trying to recognize those folks and I’m not sure how that would tie in to the franchise other than having ‘red’ in front of it.

I haven’t gotten the vibe it was a real contender for the name anyway but guess it’s possible?

2.2 Groundhogs day.

It’s going to be hog related. I’m dug in. 😉

We're forced to move away from one race and refuse to use anything that may resemble it.....just to do it to be another race.

My reasoning is I'm so tired of race catering, race discussions, race guilt that I would like to just stay as far away from it as possible. For me, that will be removing myself from the team if they do that.

Also, the Tuskegee airmen are from Alabama. They have no tie to DC.

I agree it doesn't make much sense for it to be tied to DC - totally agreed. And I hate the whole 'pick something with red in it' thing - because, well, it's stupid :) As far as Redtails go, there's a big difference between moving on from a name because some supposedly find it offensive (which I find ridiculous, but that is the supposed reason) vs. picking a name to honor a group (any group). Are they both race-related? Yeah. But beyond that, not much similarity. I really would view it as trying to honor folks who deserve honoring (and it's because of their race and some folks historical view of it that they would be singled out for recognition). Anyway, I think if you look at it as purely 'we want to honor some great American servicemen who haven't gotten enough recognition', vs. some kind of 'woke' move, it makes more sense. Just me though. I can't really adequately define why I hate Commanders so much, so it's not always easy to explain why one name or another doesn't sit well.

The only thing I’ll say to that is that 90 years ago, the team was named Redskins to honor native Americans. The logo was designed by a Native American. None of that mattered in the end. I would avoid any naming after any person or group. In the future, you don’t know how people will view naming a team after said group. One of the criticism of people doing things like this now is they say it’s appropriation. So what does that look like in 5, 10, or 20 years. Some people would probably protest right away. I agree that honoring these men is a noble thing to do. But without a (known) connection to the team, I think it would end up with people being upset at the name either now or in the future.

Good points. I don't think there's much chance this is the name, but who knows? I respect everyone's feelings on a name. We've been through a lot as fans, so the everyone deserves to be up in their feels about it in my opinion, no matter how anyone feels.

Sorry, editing my response, others have made the points.

Hail to the Commies just doesn't sound American.......

From a Washington Post article on July 17th, 2020:

Bill Astore, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who has taught military history at the Air Force Academy and has criticized the increasing militarization of sports over the years, has reservations about a “proud and heroic military unit” becoming the mascot for a football team.

“We honor the Tuskegee Airmen and we remember their sacrifice,” Astore said. “They had a great record as fighter pilots who escorted bombers over Germany during World War II. They were heroes and they’re remembered for that. I think they do deserve to be honored, especially given the racism that they had to overcome. All that being said, I don’t think it’s right to name a football team after them. … It would turn the Tuskegee Airmen into a commodity. I think it cheapens them.”

Would they really want to take the risk of going down this road again?

Personally, I have warmed up to Redtails over the last year or so, given a lot of the other options. That all said, I still firmly believe that we are getting a name on Wednesday that was not displayed in any fashion whatsoever in the latest "Making The Brand" episode. If I am not mistaken, both Commanders and Redtails were.

Who knows though...just 4 more days of waiting and the nonsense will be over for better or worse.

i'm actually more excited about it being over, than I am the name... as sad as that sounds.

I'm not happy we changed, so I can't find myself endorsing this process...but i do find myself excited that we will no longer have people tell us we should just put a potato on our helmet and remain the Redskins..

So, were going to remove racism from our name by
.. remembering racism?

Yay, more guilt!!

There is no tie to the Tuskegee airmen here in DC nor will there ever be no matter how far down our throats we shove this PC nonsense.

uh...

Not sure if this is real or not

This stuff is starting to feel like serious misdirection. As effed up as our PR dept has been, can’t imagine they would allow these kind of leaks? I'm betting it’s not Commanders at this point. The bad news, it could be something even worse :)
