PFT: Gruden says the “clock’s ticking” on Griffin

Sharpe was bad, but the scout from SI took it to a whole different level. I always refrain from posting the bad ones because they'll just infuriate people.

I read the article you seem to be referring to, and I came away from it wondering "what the hell did they do to him"? Also, I think even less of Gruden for publicly eviscerating him.

I don't really see his benching as a bad thing if they coach him up the way it needs to be done. But the way they have done it speaks to other problems.

Griffin first and foremost needs to get his head on straight. He's lost confidence, which compounds decision making problems and exacerbates his lack of pocket experience. This is where Gruden has failed. He failed to identify what RG needs to be successful. I think Gruden got frustrated with RG's prep work and mishandled that publically, damaging RG's psyche even more. I got a sense his comments about RG taking the ipad home with him for study was probably passive aggressive ( It is also possible Gruden tried numerous ways to get through to him and this was the last trick in the box to try before giving up on him). I think, as OM intimated, he works hard but not necessarily on the right things or in the right way. That is on RG and he needs to wrap his head around the notion that he can no longer rely on his physical talents. He needs to build his knowledge of pocket work and of reading defenses and then let his physical prowess compliment his intellect. Imagine Peyton manning with RG's athleticism. That is the vision many of us had in 2012. We knew then he'd need to transition and thought he was smart enough to do it. Injuries screwed things up. Now I'm not sure there's time to see enough from him to justify keeping him past next year. The decision may be made, so it may be a mute point. But I still think he's capable of getting it. He's young and there's plenty of time in his career to be what he was expected to be. But it may not be until he's released or traded to a team that can work a better contract for the next stage of his career. It's also possible that RG never gets it and just simply is what he is.

Nothing personal, bro, but that entire post of random people and assholes who defend murderers was on the same level. There is no merit to it or proven validity.

Was this directed at me? I don't remember posting anything about defending a murderer.

Sharpe defended Lewis the murderer. You just quoted him and used his vague opinion as something to bash Griffin with.

I think everyone was shocked at how it was handled. Everyone seems to have a theory as to why, but we may never know. It just depends on who you listen to or believe.

Oh okay. I had no idea that Sharpe ever defended Lewis. I've never liked Sharpe before.

McD5 is fine - he just shared Sharpe's comments.

Another unsubstantiated rumor fueled by the Internet and unreliable source. It's all good but it's also bs.

IMO....RGIII needs to get out of DC as quickly as possible. It's a place that destroys players, coaches and potential. He needs to relocate to a team that is stable, has an established culture, a strong coaching staff and a smoothly running FO. The Washington Redskins remain a chaotic organization. This organization's first instinct is to eat itself the moment something moves off center-line.

RGIII will be an upper tier QB eventually. Just not in DC. As things are positioned right now...I see this organization...best case...as being an 8-8/9-7 franchise with perhaps an occasional play-off appearance for a long, long, long time. from top to bottom...it doesn't have the leadership to succeed and compete with the best. just my ramblings of course.....documented by the last 22 years.

You may be right in the long run. I'm a Redskins fan, not an RG fan so I'd prefer he stay here, mature and grow into it if it's in him. I don't care what happens to him once he's off the team. Succeed or fail makes no difference to me. And he's not blame free in all of this. He didn't get benched by 2 different coaches for nothing. Intellectually I agree with you on the nature of the organization. Emotionally I will continue to root for improvement. Otherwise all that's left is to stop watching football. I can't just change an allegiance forged in childhood during the most glorious of football successes. Thus I will continue to wallow in the muck hoping things might change.

It's kind of like watching a family member self destruct and destroy their life. You root for them, you do what you can to help and are supportive of them but at some point after they continue the same crap over and over and over you have to distance yourself from them. I'm almost at that point with this team, over 20 years of watching this self destructive bit stuck on repeat and I'm almost completely broken as a fan.

Having lived through it, more than once, and still doing so, it's not like it, or kinda like it. But I think I know what you meant.

Totally agree. As for Robert Griffin, I think the benching will do him a world of good. It usually does for QB's in order to get their act together. They know then that its not a game, its a business, and time to put your prima donna self away and get serious. The benching last year was publicly stated as an end of year benching, so Robert just put it all aside, rather than continue to participate and improve with the clipboard. He wasn't going back into the game at any time, so that does effect your mentality on the sideline. This year, the benching may be temporary, he is the backup and may go back in at any time. That, my friends, is vastly different than last year. so I'm not the doom and gloom fan that cries all is lost , chicken little the sky is falling, and we'll never be any good again for a long, long, long time. that mentality is hogwash (pun intended).

My gut feel, and this is strictly intuitive, is that things have turned a corner when Allen and Gruden were hired, and Dan is taking a back seat. I really believe that. I don't know if Gruden will make it, but its rediculous to call him a bust this early. For once, I see the Redskins are going to "rebuild" in earnest, and not just give it lip service. Last year we had some good turnover in roster, next offseason we will go full steam ahead and make drastic (not desperate) changes. Griffin is just part of the changing tide. No reason for anyone to cry a river for him. I will give the rebuild plan more time, I have confidence we are on the right track, but the most importat thing to remeber right now is that you can't bake a cake in an hour. It takes whatever time its going to take. I think Dan will give Gruden whatever time it will take. And yes, in today's NFL, you can go from last to first in one years time. Been done many times, thank you. Don't bet on that, but throw away your lifetime investment in the team you love on account of a bad year by a bad team. We're due for good things and good times are a comin. Trust me.

Bad etiquette to reply to own post but can't edit for some reason. Meant to say:

"Don't bet on that, but DON'T throw away your lifetime investment in the team you love on account of a bad year by a bad team."

It's a good point Mick that this year he was really demoted, not benched permanently. I suspect Gruden wants to see him react well and prep hard as a backup. If he fails to do that, punt him with no remorse.

I'm curious where you think Gruden wants him anymore?

For Jay Gruden, the best place for Robert Griffin III is elsewhere - The Washington Post

I think what we should be discussing is what we might get in a trade...but, considering the team's disdain for the guy, I suspect he gets released at the end of the season.

Jason Reid is one that is very quick to get a knee jerk reaction so I take what he says with a massive grain of salt.

One thing that bothers me is that he references what Gruden wants as fact, yet I see no quotes to back up what he says.

I admit that it's hard to look at the situation and see a positive return in place for Griffin, but were also seeing press conferences and reading articles by people who report the news. Gruden has maintained a very open and brutally honest relationship with the media, so until he comes out and says Griffin is gone, or we get the news that a deal has been done to move him... it's all speculation. I wish I could hear the conversations that Gruden has behind closed doors. I am in the same boat steven is in the thinking that, albeit a small chance, this is a salvageable situation. Maybe I'm delusional lol.

Report: Jay Gruden is done with Robert Griffin III - CBSSports.com

so, Jason Reid is saying that Gruden wants Griffin out of DC. It makes sense considering how he has treated him and his lack of trying to work with him. I get it, Griffin takes a lot of energy and attention. but this part makes me worried:

Through three preseason games and five starts in the regular season, Gruden has seen enough to realize that Griffin is at best a long-term project as a pocket passer. Griffin was too deliberate reading defenses, displayed poor footwork and an alarming lack of pocket presence for a signal-caller in his third NFL season.

Also, Gruden's assessment goes deeper than Griffin's play. He has major concerns about Griffin's decision making off the field, which has come to light through conversations with team officials at Redskins Park.

To Gruden, Griffin seemed more concerned about enhancing his brand than about honing his pocket skills. Often, Gruden rolled his eyes after being informed about the life lessons the 24-year-old offered on social media. Gruden became frustrated that Griffin, even after Gruden benched him, failed to acknowledge his role in his failure.

IF that is true then we have a judgmental HC who rolls his eyes like a girl and decides who gets to be on the cool squad depending on how much he approves of and likes you.

while much of this may be true...here's the problem I have with the core theme: the team has been awful across the board. and that is coaching. Gruden is an eff up who is scapegoating IMO. maybe a natural psychological response - but not one that plays accountability as a long suit. THIS TEAM HAS GOTTEN NO BETTER ON GRUDEN'S WATCH. and that, at some point, needs to be examined for all its implications.

Aren"t these just rumors?

And isn't Jason Reid accused of being a hater and hack? But now some believe him?

The only thing stranger than that is those who place blame on Gruden.

Step 1. Shanahan and RG3 combine to destroy his physical ability by playing him on a bad wheel. Shanny lies and claims the team doctor checked him out. The team doctor calls Shanny out on his lie.

Step 2. Gruden comes in and immediately drafts 2 offensive linemen to try and protect RG3. He signs a third O-lineman to start at guard.

Step 3: Gruden and the FO sign Desean Jackson and Andre Roberts to give RG3 much better receivers.

Step 4: RG3's father comes out twice and says he no longer wants him to be a running QB. That running QBs don't last.

Step 5: Gruden dumbs down the playbook, making it as easy as possible for RG3 to begin learning how to be a NFL QB. He even gets 5 WRs open at once--it still doesn't matter.

Step 6: Gruden invests 10 months of his time to try and save the franchise project. Very little progress.

But Gruden's to blame. That's perfectly logical.

I'm of the opinion Jason Reid is still a hack, and will not worry about his article until there is some modicum of truth shown by the Redskins FO.
