I don't like kickers as a general rule. They only have one job. I'm even forgiving for unruly weather conditions and attempts outside of 45 yards. So I don't like either of them Gano or Cundiff. Cundiff just barely made that last one. I trust him as much as I trust the pass defense.

Boone, if 60% is good, then Gano was great. He hit almost 75% of the kicks he attempted for us. Cundiff got fired from Baltimore for a reason. If this becomes a habit of his, I hope they ship him out with Haslett and DeAngelo Hall.

And the reason he doesn't, and shouldn't, get credit for the game winner and be excused of all his misses, is because had he not missed all of the other kicks, we wouldn't have had to rely on a nail-biting last second attempt.
 
As previously mentioned - I'm really not defending the guy - I just think calling for his head after one game is a little ridiculous. As for the 'they must have had a reason to let him go' argument, you could say that about any player released. He blew a kick that cost them a Super Bowl appearance for starters - that's enough in and of itself to get you fired.

Again - if he continues to have problems like yesterday - I'll be glad to chip in for his Bon Voyage party.
 
He made the final kick. under insane amounts of pressure. Think about it for a minute. Not only the ridiculous pressure to kick a game winning FG on the road. On top of that, he had to know that if he missed that kick, his return flight home to DC wasn't guaranteed, and he certainly wasn't going to have a job this morning.

Dude was kicking for his job. And if we cut him 1 month after the Ravens cut him, how many other teams (outside of Miami - WTF Carpenter?) were gonna line up to give him a job? He may still get replaced this week for all I know, but he was kicking for his livlihood, and suceeded.

I'm not saying that replaces or excuses the two makeable misses. I am saying I did not doubt for a minute he was making that last kick. Not even a second. For me, personally, that's worth something.
 
Heat of the Moment Syndrome strikes again.

Billy had a tough day. Missed 2 short FG's. I he makes one of those two, and hits the gamewinner like he did yesterday, this thread doesn't exist and we're talking about all the stuff we "should" (my opinion) be talking about today.

One game. If he picks up next week where he left of before missing the second of two makables yesterday, the interwebz will quickly find some other poor soul to roast in effigy.

No a waste of my time is being forced into defending a player I have no desire to defend. My intention wasn't to be a defender of Gano or to demand they bring him back.

Just to say that he had a big leg, and that his problems on kickoffs weren't due to him not having a big leg.

And here we are, monday morning, and every radio host is (again) talking about how Gano clearly has the strong leg, that his dismissal from the Redskins had more to do with him and Shanahan not getting along, and that his issues with kickoffs were due to specific requests from the coaching staff for directional kicking trying to pin the other team inside the 20. This also comes from Larry Michael. I mean these are people who talk to the coaching staff... This isn't just being made up.

But I guess we'll just continue to ignore all of that.

The bottom line (for me) is that if the redskins are going to try to kick a 53 yarder and they send out Gano then my concern is he pushes it left/right. If they send out Cundiff my concern is if he can get the ball there.

It doesn't matter because Gano isn't coming back, and Cundiff can't hit a field goal over 49 yards. We need to look elsewhere if we ever want to be able to hit a 50+ yarder.
 
I won't give him as much credit for the game winner as others will, because if he had to kick that from 6 inches further back, we'd be 1-3 right now. He got lucky, not good.
 
I agree with Om. You don't cut a guy for one bad game. If it becomes a pattern we find ourselves a new kicker.
 
Agreed on the not cutting thing.

Even if you wanted to cut him who would you bring in? week 4 isn't exactly the best time to find a kicker. is there anyone out there that is even worth looking at?

Can't bring Rackers back, he is busy kicking 63 yards FG's for the 49er's. :insane:

I just don't understand kickers or kicking. How can a guy boom kickoffs into the end zone, but struggle on FG's 50 and further. Then we have a kicker that struggles on touchbacks, yet was decent at 50 yards and further, then struggle with closer kicks?

Can we clone Chip Lohmiller?

Because on kickoffs they get a 10 yard run up, with no pressure, noone's trying to block it, and the goal is to land it somewhere between the sidelines so it's not a kick out of bounds not between the two goal posts for points which are much narrower.

It's just a different kick in every single way.

he has a much stronger leg?

some kickers have more power than others, thats all.

Janakowski is, btw, a special kicker. There aren't many who can even attempt to boot the ball as far as he does, much less with the reliability and accuracy he does.
