If true, mildly surprised they wouldn’t just grab Peters who is clearly the consensus strongest candidate this offseason. Could they be investigating a structure where Peters is Head of Football Ops and Cunningham is GM with both he and the HC reporting to Peters?

I don’t think he takes the interview (after previously refusing all interviews) if he’s not ready to accept if offered. John Lynch isn’t going anywhere is my guess so if Peters wants to truly be the man, he’ll have to leave SF to do it.

As an assistant GM, I would doubt Washington offers Peters a job where he is slated above a new GM hire and expected to take on a Team Executive/President type of role.

A guy like Peters wants to prove himself in the GM role and win Super Bowls using his direct knowledge of the NFL and scouts' acumen to do it.

Having a GM under him at his age and where he is in his career currently would be very unusual.

I don't really understand the move to make an internal hire if you felt you had no choice but to hire a legend like Bill. I don't think Mayo was on anyone's radar. He wasn't about to get poached.

He was already in the organization. This is more of a promotion than a hiring. I heard someone the other day start talking about Mayo being the coach there and had to look up who it was. I agree they had him handpicked before the season was over.

Yes - this clearly must’ve been in the works. May prove to be a misstep as unexpected things can happen (Vrabel availability). Quite possible the Pats might not have gone that route had they anticipated Vrabel firing and seems like they could’ve safely waited a bit before promoting internally.

It’s being widely reported that succeeding Belichick was in Mayo’s contract. It was fast because it was the plan all along.

Who does that? Guaranteeing someone as a successor? I’ve never heard of anyone getting that kind of assurance in a contract, particularly not an unproven first time guy.
