Official Game Thread - Week 5 - Commanders @ Chargers

Chargers are missing Mack and Alt. 2 of their best players. Overall though we are going to be down a lot more players and JD probably isn't 100%.

The NFL is so random though that anything could happen. I don't expect to win though. Not with that defense. Not with how they have been playing on the road as well. We might have more fans in the stands but the team still has to travel across the country.
The Giants were able to get them last week, even though they were out-gained and at times out played. However, they were able to put together enough offense to win, and force 2 turnovers and score points off the turnovers.

That's basically the recipe this week. Pressure Herbert into making mistakes, put together enough offense to win.

The problem is, we haven't been good at taking the ball away and our secondary has been a mess. But you literally never know. It could all come together. Or it might not.

That's why they play the games.

Meh, this is revisionist history. He sucked ass while he was here. He single handedly lost us the game against the Steelers last year, a game that may have made us the #1 seed by the end of the season.
Also, I don't think he's doing extremely hot with the Chargers. He's not starting, and according to the guy on Galdi, they really protect him when he's on the field. So, he's fine, but not really above replacement level is my read.

I think St. Juste was better the season before Whitt was here, too. And I said that this off season let alone after his supposed resurgence in LA.

Like I've been saying this off season, I am not sold on Whitt. I explained it deeper in the defense thread. I am not out on him either. I'll give it time.
I really thought I replied to this, but now I can't find it anywhere.

So either this is a re-has of something I said or I dreamed a post.

Steven Haglund, a co-host of theGuilty as Charged podcast, was on Galdi, and Galdi asked him how BSJ was doing. And what he said was basically:
1. BSJ doesn't start, he only plays in certain packages.
2. When he does play, they are almost always in cover-3, and BSJ isn't asked to do much.
3. When he played in pre-season, it didn't look great.

The problem we had for the last 2 years, which is mostly Ron's fault, is we had no other options but to ask BSJ to be something he is incapable of being. And what Whitt and Quinn want to do on defense, which is lock up on the outside, bring pressure and get turnovers, BSJ just can't do. And I think he was asked to do it, and couldn't. Now, could they have adjusted the defense to do more things he could do? Maybe, and he might have looked better.

Anyway, I don't think he's really good.

I really don't know where that post I wrote went. I even looked up the DB coach, it's Tommy Donatell. And then I went to go look for a Quinn/Whitt/Peters connection, and I couldn't find an obvious one. He was in Seattle from 2017-2020, but Quinn was gone by then. I don't see overlaps with Whitt or Peters. So I don't know if there was a connection. He wasn't a Ron Rivera "I will only hire people who I know regardless of competence" hire. Maybe Tommy is a problem, maybe not, tough to say, but the DBs certainly aren't communicating or playing well, and he is the first in line of the coaches for that group.

EDIT: I found the post, it was in the all things defense thread. So you can ignore much of the same stuff I had written there.

I mean, there is literally no hope.

But changing just one mind might be possible? Maybe?

Probably not.

Man we lose a game and people do a 180 with pitchforks and torches ready to see everything burn down. How are people praising BSJ and acting like his 2023 was good? That was the most yards he's given up in his career so far.

And to Voice_of_Reason you're right, he's only played 22% of defensive snaps so far this year. He's played more snaps on special teams than defense.

It's the way we lost the game which has people's feathers' ruffled, and I'm not sure it's not for good reason.

The offense minus 2/3 of the starters keeps the team in it and scores 27 points and the defense forgets to get on the plane. It's a bad look and it's going to spur questions about leadership, scheme and players. And it probably should.

However, I don't think we want to go back to Jack and Ron running the defense. :)

DQ said that 5 will wear a brace. Jayden's mom said not to worry though, he's fine. Probably just cautionary for a couple of weeks

Tay Martin is the PS elevation

Likely more for ST, not exactly expecting a big WR output but who knows.

Yeah in my “expectation” post I predicted this. Not to take credit for a genius thought, they did it last week so I figured they would do it again.

They only have 4 WRs healthy on the active roster so they need a 5th for game day.

Martin had 1 catch for 14 yards against the Falcons. He played on 9 offensive snaps, or 16%.

Just a note, unless I am very much mistaken, there are not Saturday injury reports. So the one from Friday posted earlier in this thread is the latest official injury report.

Brown, Cosmi and McLaurin are out and did not practice.

According to DQ, Payne will play.

Everybody else on the injury report was full go on Friday, so my assumption is all of them will play.

God I can hope we can pull this out tomorrow
It's going to be really tough without McLaurin and Brown, probably a limited Deebo, and a Daniels on a brace + the issues in the secondary.

We'll see. I posted my expectations earlier. My expectation is this is going to be an ugly, mistake riddled game. I hope I'm wrong, but that's what I expect.

Hopefully no more injuries. They also have some injuries
