Official Game Thread - Week 3 - Raiders @ Commanders

I'm looking to see how we address a couple of concerns moving forward this week.

-Will the team look at some kickers? Gay hasn't looked fabulous. Lol. He somewhat redeemed himself later in the game, but his misses against better competition could have come back to haunt us.

-With S Harris injury, do we go get a safety? I'm not sure the extent of his injury, but I'd have to say 4-6 wks out is the best prognosis. So, it stands to reason he goes to IR and we sign a player (is Simmons on APs radar?).

-WR. Here's another area that may need to be addressed as TM was injured (quad?) and we already have N. Brown missing time. Hopefully, TM is nothing major and we get Brown back, but right now Samuel is the only true threat we have in the passing game. I think Lane will eventually get there and Moore has been a minor contributor, but I hope the FO is not going to get too comfortable with that.

-On a side note, the changes to the OL was the best performance our OL has had this year. I hope they continue to go with that look until we can get Cosmi back. But a huge shout out to Chris Paul who had a helluva game.

Siebert was really good until the hip injury then we never saw him again and he's a free agent.

The changes to the OL were desperately needed, I was hoping the team would address that going into this game.

The dread is strong in this thread. This isn't directed at anyone in particular.....but the litany of complaints after hanging 40+ points in a win is a head-scratcher. If you watch other games, every team has issues, bad calls, (both by the officials & coaches), bad luck, missed kicks, whiffed tackles, whatever. It's not just us. The other teams are paid to play too.

My heads not in the sand, and I'm perfectly aware that we have some glaring weaknesses, and there's a lot of room for improvement. That said, (typed?), wins are tough in this league. There are only 6 undefeated teams left and it's only week 3. It's almost like someone who hits the lottery for $5 million, then bitches about paying the taxes. Wins are good. Who cares about style points, or stats, as long as we win?

The W-L record is the most important stat of all, and we're on the right side of it.

I thought the secondary was really good yesterday--before everyone got hurt and the game was a blow out. There was the one 45 yarder on the first play, but I didn't think the Raiders did much until the 4th quarter

To your point, prior to the 4th, they had the TD and FG drives, and…

2 drives ending in -2 yds
1 drive of 0 yds
1 drive of 4 yds
2 drives of 6 yds

That’s it.

I believe they converted 1 3rd down prior to the 4th q.

In the moment, I didn’t necessarily feel the secondary was playing great, but hard to ding them too much for giving up yds in the 4th with Harris, Lattimore and Amos getting injured and a newly signed street FA playing.

Meh I think you’re over simplifying the retrospective here.

I think most are pointing out the warts that can hold this team back from competing for a SB. It’s different than in years past where the argument was more like [if they don’t get this corrected then we’ll be looking at top 5 pick… again]

I agree W-L is where I’d start in evaluating the team but its usefulness depends on the context. When we were 6-2 or whatever with Alex Smith throwing 50 swing passes a game, I don’t think anyone thought the conversation about the future success of the team stopped at the W-L record.

Ultimately I think our run D was the Achilles heel of the team last year. We’re looking better on that front so far. Im confident our passing game and secondary woes will fade away later into the season. Kicking… I’m shaky on but that’s always a streaky deal. Feeling good about 2-1.

No argument here. I'm frequently accused of being simple, and I understand your point. I've been following this team since the early 70's and I've seen a lot of ups and downs....the Snyder era being the worst.

The Snyder years should be voided as this organization is clearly light years beyond that horrible dysfunction. And you're not simple as like you and others here, we have been witness (thankfully) to having the absolute joy of seeing greatness on the field with super bowl trophies held high.

We older folks got to witness dominant teams when the organization was run properly. That is now happening again. Will there be mistakes along the way? Sure. But we are now being run by competent adults who are building the team the right way.

Enjoy the ride, my brother. Cause for all the things we can point out that are negative, we are on the right path back to being a cornerstone of the league.

Agreed with your overall point. It’s nice to have a team we can be honest about these days, even if that honesty is in the form of criticism.

Haven’t seen anyone mention it, and maybe I’m on an island with this for a reason. It sure feels to me like the bulk of the secondary failures occur when we are in zone. Gaping holes.

Been my impression as well, and I’m guessing its (partially?) related to blitzing leaving us down a man in coverage.

I’d also speculate that Harris and (particularly) Amos will get more comfortable as the season progresses, Wagner and Luvu aren’t the best in coverage, and there may be some complexity issues in terms of playing man-heavy after being forced into more zone coverage (than I think Whitt wanted to play) last year.

This staff seems quite adept at maximizing several players stats beyond what their talent might suggest they're capable of.

Last year it was dante fowler, this year its Armstrong, remember when trevon diggs had a million interceptions and was looking like the next deon sanders? Now he looks lost half the time.

Im still not 100 percent sold that finding exactly what players are good at and always using them in that manner is the way to go rather than getting as many multi talented players as they can, but they are quite good at it.

Said it before, but Amos is a future shutdown 1 in this league. He’s going to be elite for many years. Finally have ourselves a shutdown guy again! Been so long. He will have his bumps and bruises this year for sure but can’t wait to see him against AJ Brown.

According to PFF, Kinlaw had a bad game, grade in the 40s. But who knows?

In coverage according to PFF, Owens, Quan, Reaves struggled. But a long of strong grades otherwise.
