Just curious, if you have PFF, can you go back and look at the premium OTs and their rookie grades?

I would imagine over the course of the next month or two we will see a jump in his progression, both by a seeming lower level of competition, and his own development.

One dude off to a hot start as a rookie LT, is the dude Logan Paulsen was in love with as to his play before the draft, Josh Simmons. Taken after Conerly. 75 pass blocking score in his first two games. Great start for him.

Not saying Conerly doesn't end up the better pick. Will see. But Paulsen wasn't the only one who thought Simmons was the best pure pass protector in the draft. I recall Simekka from PFF among others loved him.

The NFL is a quarterback-driven league. That’s why the most valuable positions revolve around QBs, those who protect them, and those who can disrupt them. Playing left tackle is one of the most demanding jobs in football, especially when protecting one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the game. Patrick Mahomes makes magic off-platform, which means his linemen are never quite sure where he’ll be. But after just two weeks, it’s fair to say the Chiefs have found their franchise left tackle for at least the next decade.

Right. Also the idea kind of ignores that Burrow is one of the most immobile classic pocket passers in recent history, undoubtedly a stud, and he’s injured all the fucking time due to his blocking. Statues are just as susceptible to injury as mobile QB’s, either way they need to navigate the pocket and have a talent for getting rid of the ball. Jayden has shown that, but he was clearly frazzled and not seeing things well against the Packers. Never looked comfortable. Nothing really to do with his propensity for running around itself.

I really don't like Thursday games. Been busy, not really responding to the Packers game in a timely manner, but maaaaan what kind of gameplan was that from Kingsbury? If Green Bay was going to be that consistently over-committed to stopping the passing game, where were the adjustments to counter with a rushing attack? It was Week 2, on the road, short week, against a good team, I am mostly over it, but the injuries (especially to JD5) are the lingering things I am frustrated about.

Yeah with the way those away Thursday night games seem to always go it probably would have been better to just treat it like a preseason game and keep all the important players on the sidelines.

What I don’t understand is the refusal to start Wylie at either RT or RG early in the season. For those that don’t know, Wylie ranked NINTH in pass block win rate last year at OT. That’s one spot ahead of Tunsil, and multiple spots higher than other notable names like Ronnie Stanley, Jordan Mailata, Trent Brown, Zach Tom and Penei Sewell.

I can understand how excited Kliff was to use Conerly in the run/screen game, which is why he left that note on AP’s desk to draft him. So I get why they rushed to start him. But you have to actually RUN THE BALL for that decision to make sense. You can’t pass the ball over 40 times against what is likely to be the best pass rush in the league with a raw rookie RT. Even Joe Alt struggled against the Texans last year in the Chargers’ playoff game, and Alt came into the league as much more of a finished product than Conerly.

And if you absolutely need to start Conerly this early, then why in the world would you not start the best pass protector you have on the right side of your OL (i.e., Wylie) next to him? Is Allegreti just too expensive for them to leave on the bench? And you need to justify his salary at the risk of getting your franchise QB seriously injured? That’s just a massive coaching failure in my eyes.
