Official Game Thread - Week 2 - Commanders @ Packers - TNF

Watching the re-run on NFLN now.
Couldn't sleep.

with the loss of Jeremy Chin we are painfully vulnerable to physical tight ends. I hope Medrano can fill that void soon. Will Harris can not

Good news! It was as bad as it looked. In fact, it was as bad as it’s EVER looked for him:

Only up from here. Kliff needs to rebuild his game plans around running the ball, utilizing Jayden’s mobility, play-action on early downs. Protect our defense, long tiring drives for the opponents’ defenses. Let Jayden play ahead of the sticks and not in poor down/distance situations. Get aggressive on 4th down again. Cut the bubble screens, but keep Deebo moving sideways before the snap. Attack down the seams (especially off PA).

There is a rule, do not bet against Green Bay at Lambeau Field. They have an all time home record of 473-239-20, including 33-11 over the last five years. So I have had this game as a loss since the schedule came out. Add to that the short week, then they crushed Detroit in week 1, this was always going to be tough assignment.

I’m disappointed by all the missed field goals, dropped passes, missed throws, sacks, blown coverages, and overall sloppiness, but I’m more worried about the injuries, especially Ekeler. If he tore his Achilles he is probably done. Coleman and Wise could be serious too. Somebody also mentioned Bates, but I didn’t see what happened to him. It was a tough night.

Hopefully things look better after the long week.

As has been mentioned, the 58 yard attempt was a tactical abomination. I had as much chance of making that one as he did. The only way Gay makes 58 yards-worth of FGs is if DQ petitions the league to let him attempt a 30 yarder followed by a 28 yarder. I am also sick of hearing about his guaranteed deal. Eat it and move on.

There need to be 2-3 free agent kickers in house for tryouts this week.

In the year 2025, an NFL kicker really needs to be able to make that kick. All the good kickers are hitting from that distance. We will probably see Justin Tucker’s record broken soon with all the guys hitting 60+ and the new K-Balls.

A guy who can’t reliably make a 50 yard kick in the NFL is wild, but I think Gay used to make them. Before last season, he was making 69% of his kicks from 50+ yards including several 57 and 58 yard kicks. Since last season, he is only good for 1 out of 3 from that range, so I have no idea what broke him.

At least he kicked a good onside kick I guess, and they weren’t wild misses. I might give him a while to break the slump, but I could also see bringing somebody else on. Either way, I would go for it on fourth down more, like last season.

Yeah I mentioned this weeks back, but that is Colt fans on twitter made fun of the signing. He struggled in the preseason and apparenty at the end of camp, too.

Losing to GB is nothing to be ashamed of. But what i hated about that game is they were dominated and exposed. It came off like GB wias in a different strata -- a great team playng a mediocre one.

I like Peters. But one thing he feels different than Roseman is that he doesn't cut losses as fast. He gave Gay a fat contract for a kicker I doubt he owns up on that as a mistake if he feels like it might be one this fast.

Bill had 4 carries.

3 of the 4 were on 1st & 10, for 4, 4, and 5 yards.

The last was on 3rd & 1 for 4 yards.

There were zero poor runs.
Yep, when Kliff gave up on BRob last year, when Kliff admitted he forgets to run… you have to believe all of it will continue this year. The best NFL offenses tend to have more balance. Also it is real balance throughout the game.

I think part of it was the hangover of the preseason where starters barely played. And Terry and Noah didn't do camp.

Terry and Noah were mostly blanketd by jag CBs.

GB started the season sharp.

Jayden hasn't really been himself in both games. That will change.

I didn't think they'd start strong for various reasons.

A. didn't play their starters in the preseason for the most part
B. Light camp
C. Some of their early opponents did take the preseason more seriously
D. Would take some time for the O line to gel
E. Thought it might take some time for the secondary and Lattimore is a wildcard
F. Terry and Noah missing camp
G. Jayden not having time to build chemistry with the WRs. And not throwing in the preseason.
H. Felt the team was feeling itself a little -- and they might need a bad game to refind their edge

I've made these points in the summer and the preseason point weren't well received by everyone. But it wasn't just that. It was the combination of all of them. And, I don't think any of these points are that deep or wild. These same points have been echoed by various people who cover the team. Am listening to Keim's podcast right now, he's ecohing a bunch of these. Will take some time to rebuild chemistry with the WRs because of missing camp. Light camp. O line will take time.

But I also didn't see it as a criticism of Quinn. As he said yesterday, its September football. It felt like the way he said it was September is their preseason as for finding chemistry. Could be losing the battle to win the war where you are fresher at the end of the season -- i don't know one way or another but it doesn't surprise me they had a stinker game early similar to the stinker against Tampa last year. But clearly they got better as it went along.

They got away with a C level game against the Giants. they didn't get away with a D level performance last night. But as i was saying in the summer, i don't think some early bad performances would hold through the season. So I never really felt my point was that negative. I was just saying it felt like they'd play poorly early like they did in the first two games last year.

I am just hoping their poor playing doesn't extend to the Raiders game. Being upset by them at home would I think be demoralizing.

I understand some of "it's September football" but they were not just down right out of sick and flat, they were out coached. That's where I feel DQ does deserve some blame for the abomination that was last nights game. The play calling on both sides of the ball was not good. Last night we reversed roles from week 1, we were the Giants and the Packers were the Commanders :(

I am keeping my fingers crossed on the injury front. We really can't afford any long-term injuries, especially this early in the season. They are all major contributors.

I do think at RB we might be surprised with CRod being able to step in with the oddly underused last night Bill. And we do have depth on the lines. I am not overly concerned about the play of the lines as I do understand the gelling required.

On a good note, our punter is still one of our top weapons and the punt and kick coverage was very good. Special Teams are a kicker away from being very good.

“[The Packers’] rush pattern was very coordinated. Clogged up the lanes and the escape routes,” right guard Nick Allegretti said. “So they did a good job. And we really, just up front, we’ve got to give [Daniels] more time so the escape route’s needed less.”

Exactly, very noticeable how well coached and executed. There were no gaps. That pattern dares Jayden to find someone who is schemed open and can make a potentially contested catch. The Packers CBs are apparently good at that although I think the refs let them have a little bit too much contact (arguable though). They needed a better scheme and release for Jayden in those situations, but DC soundly beat OC/QB combo last night.
My opinion of Jayden hasn’t dropped much. It is Kliff I am concerned with. Also concerned that Sinnott pick is really costing us too.

If Connerly doesn’t pan out, passing on Jihaad will also look really bad. That dude may have won the Eagles week 1 with a very timely forced fumble deep in their territory.

Oh yeah. They were absolutely outcoached. As I mentioned, they looked flat against Tampa in game 1, I was sitting above the sidelines and mentioned noticing how low energy they looked back then in real time.

So when Nicki from the Athletic mentioned that the sidelines looked flat in the preseason. While it feels like nonsense to some and has no meaning. For me yeah if you isolate that point or any of the ones I've made they are easy points to make fun of. But if someone tries to take on all of these points at the same time, its not that easy. Because all of these minor points one after the other I think add up to a slow start potentially.

And like I said I don't know if in the long run of the season its good or bad. I'll leave that to be determined. But Quinn is definitely in the lets not take the preseason that serioulsy camp. There are other smart coaches who feel the same. And there are smart coaches who feel the opposite and do the opposite.

But whenever I bring it up in the context of its not just that. It's that with the other 6 points. Some latch on to the preseason alone -- remember Osaka, or this or that team doesn't take the preseason seriously either or this team did and played well and sucked during the season, etc. That's fine. My only argument about the preseason is you can't argue definitiely that either side is wrong. there are arguments either way.

My point isn't some macro idea of the preseason leads to season succeess. I got no idea one way or another. I just disagree with those who dismiss it as a ridiculous point. Considering even Dan Quinn in a response to a question from Loverro in a press conference last week more or less conceded that there is a benefit to playing in the preseason -- and I took his point as there are trade offs one way or another, which make sense to me.

If I had to pick the biggest reason why this offense is out of synch is the lack of reps with Jayden and the outside WRs, not just preseason but camp. And I know some question that point, too. But look when Joe Burrow specifically cited that same issue as a problem with him and J. Chase early last season. Maybe the point isn't that silly? Keim cited this morning that Jayden's QB rating when targeting Terry is poor so far this season. Wasn't the case early last season.

And to me the good news is they I think will work out the kinks over time. The chemistry will be regained. the O line will get better. They will find their edge. Jayden will find his rythmn, etc.

It's early to rank a lot on Conerly as he learns a new position but yeah it hasn't been a good look so far for him

He's been poor. Amos looks great. Lane looked good on his returns. Croksey-Merritt great -- shocked that in spite of him looking good, he got almost no reps and they kept running the struggiling Ekeler until his injury.

A little McCaffrey at the end of the game, hopefully that gives him confidence.

Agreed on the teams look of the preseason. When there were 4 games even the players you wanted to rest were involved for a couple drives in a couple games. Now that they have dropped the number of games as well as the usage of the starters to a point that the team was in sync. The team did look pretty good last though against a team with a lot of talented players.

The OL and thee QB to WR's definetley time to gel and that was not afforded them. No reason for the OL not to be given more play time together and yes Terry's hold should receive blame. He also needs to be targeted more, that's why he earned that contract.

At the end of the day, I do place a large portion of that awful game on the coaching, something I do not normally do. It was called terribly

Cant figure the Ekeler "every down back" kind of use out. Love him in 3rd down and quick hitters, dump offs, screens etc (in space). But not the way they used him yesterday.
