Official Game Thread - Week 17 - 49ers @ Commanders

Cole Turner and Tinsley should play.

Thomas is done and let Tinsley play Brown's role and see if either can offer anything new. Just dumb by Rivera and staff.

I hope EB doesn't get Sam killed today.

If this was still the old NFCE, Arizona would be the 4th best team.

Tinsley sucks. Cole Turner is made of popsicle sticks and school glue.

For three quarters, it looked like Howell had gotten back to what gave us hope most of this year. But that 4th quarter, you could see he was unsure of what he is doing. Whenever he is double clutching on his throws, you can tell he's hesitating and is not sure of what he is doing. It would be one thing if he did that, then went to another route. But too often, he does that, then throws to the same guy and it's either an interception or a dropped interception.

He had a lot of pressure on the picks, up to including passes getting tipped - but yes, he did look rattled and unsure. One thing that was clear, when we were running the ball with the more occasional passing play, the offense seemed to hum. Not sure what that's not obvious to the playcaller, but that's what I saw.

A 'respectable' effort today, but in a winnable game (as I predicted) we as usual found ways to lose. Howell had a few moments, but made some late fatal mistakes (with help from his friends on the OL) that prevented a resurrection of his rep.

Bottom line, in terms of draft position, we rock.

Sam's showing today only reinforces what I've thought for a while now: Give the guy some help.

The difference in Sam when he had a credible run game to work off of was very noticeable.
This guy plays in an offense that rarely helps him, whether in play design, play calling or personnel.

The idea that you'd throw away a first year starter that has shown the flashes of ability that Sam has, is beyond crazy to me and speaks to the lack of understanding of just what is player development.

Also....anyone get a chuckle of all the hype towards "Chase Young's Revenge Game" and he comes out of it with one tackle.

Funny stuff.....
Yeah, and the two times I heard his name, the first when he didn't even sniff Howell, but they said "Chase Young and the defense applying pressure to force an incompletion". Young had nothing to do with it. Then the other was when he got in the backfield on Gibson and then completely whiffed on the tackle. I think that was right before the half because they were all laughing. Probably telling him that looked familiar.

I texted my brother and cousin at the start of the game that everyone in the world knows what to do to help a young, struggling QB, except Bieniemy. The game starts with Schlereth highlighting the return of Brian Robinson and how he thinks they will lean on Robinson to take the pressure off Howell. Then Bieniemy comes out and call 3 straight pass plays before a punt. How is he the only guy who doesn't know this? And of course, they then run the ball the next few drives and then as you pointed out, they looked good on offense. It's so obvious to everyone, except these coaches. I wish they did a better job working with what he has, but I fear it's too late.

Enough of the Howell love. If this, if that, if something else. He's not the guy. He's not close. I wish he was. It's not a matter of the running game, the line, the coaching, the stars, the moon, the tides. He's not it. The Skins WILL draft a QB. That ship has sailed. We suck, but we have hope, so we tie our hopes to middling players. Move on. HTTR.

Young QBs need no support and should carry a team by themselves.

That's what you're saying, right?

I don’t dislike Sam at all but I wouldn’t bet my professional future on what I have seen. I doubt any new GM or HC would either.

It's his first season as a starter. I'm glad to parade out the stats on what first year starters look like if it helps?

He may well NOT be the guy. What are the odds that any 1st year NFL starter is 'the guy'? Very low. But that doesn't change the fact that you cannot predict who WILL be the guy based on their first year. There aren't many universals in the NFL - but that's damn near one of them.

It's easy to say 'He's not the guy'. Because chances are, he isn't. Those are just NFL odds. But how do YOU know he's not the guy?

Don't tell me it's because of what you've seen in his first year. Because lots of great QBs looked a helluva lot worse than Sam Howell in their first full season.

actually the opposite could be argued, that he's shown more in a first year starter than a lot of guys that have become 'the guy.'

The book shouldn't be written on him one way or another at this point, and the final game in a lost season isn't a 'final' determining factor either.

Whatever dude. Youre getting a new QB in the draft, get used to it.
You are advocating throwing a first year starter away to start all over at QB again.

And guess what? The next flavor of April will go through the same ups and downs that Sam has.
If that guy even makes it to the end of the season, will you be advocating to toss him aside and start all over again?

I'm old enough to remember what Mark Rypien looked like when he first got on the field: turnover machine.
Got benched for it. But the club stuck it out and developed him. Got rewarded with a Superbowl.

Sam's put a lot of good things on tape playing with one arm tied behind his back. A bright GM will see it.

I remember when RG3 was the guy after 1 year. It was a fun year, but he never came close to that again and pretty soon it was clear he was not the guy. 1 year doesn’t make or break anyone. If they move on from him, that’s fine. But we all need to be prepared for the next guy starting his first year to go through the same thing, especially if they can’t fix the O-line.

So Chase was basically silent this game . If there was any game he was going light a fire for it was this one, he really doesn't seem to care .,

Sam Deserves another year, If he fails with a much improved coaching staff and OLine then we know he is a back up. But its not worth it to get another QB and go through this crap again one season later
