I agree with almost all of that Bulldog. Interesting though that you bring up Manning. They DID throw Manning to the wolves in his rookie season. It was 1998 so teams obviously weren't throwing at the rates they do today, but Manning's rookie season had the 2nd highest passing attempts of his first 13 seasons - in fact it was the highest attempts for any QB in the NFL that 1st season. His overall stats were much worse than Sam Howell's btw. A 56.7% completion rate, 26 TDs to 28 INTs, 4.9% INT rate. Manning did that all while getting sacked just 22 times.
The next 2 seasons Peyton Manning was a Pro-Bowler.
That's the advantage of being a top overall pick vs. a 5th rounder. GMs and HCs have to exercise some patience because of the capital allocated.
The pressure to win and succeed now is much greater today than maybe it was back then. It's unfortunate as Howell probably showed enough to get another season. Instead we're likely to gamble on a QB with our 1st pick, who we'll THEN show patience with.
