Official Game Thread - Week 10 - Steelers @ Commanders

I’m not saying that the team doesn’t want to beat Pittsburgh, I think our guys are deadly serious about protecting home field this season, but I also think our coaches are more concerned about the Philly game. I think they know that’s the one with real consequences for us. Hence the over cautious resting of BRob, Lattimore and maybe Seibert.

Which, personally, I think shows good coaching. I’d rather have them ready to go for the divisional game, rather than risk exacerbating an issue on a short week where they have no chance to heal up.

I also think that they believe we have enough firepower to beat these guys even without those key players, and I think they’re right. We’ve gone a pretty good job on our ground game even without BRob, and our pass defense will be the same as it’s been all year. Can’t miss what we haven’t had.

Seibert could be an issue, we know the recent history of kickers here outside of him. Fingers crossed we can just score touchdowns and have someone who can nail the XPs.

I feel confident in this. If BRob and Lattimore could go they would go. I think Quinn and Peters mindset is that every game is critical. We just saw that philosophy in action with letting Jayden play the past 2 games when he likely wasn't 100%. I can't imagine they are anything close to 'let's hold this guy out because later games are more important'. Just my sense of it. The future is now.
 
The Steelers are a committed running team.

These Redskins can't seem to stop the run.

That's a bad mix for Sunday
 
You're not wrong DP, but it goes both ways. Washington has one of the most dangerous passing attacks in the league, and the Steelers are ranked 20th in passing yards.

I would expect it to be a hard fought back and forth game.
 
I think we can stop the run. We've seen it at least in half-long spurts. What this defense can't do is walk and chew gum. That is, they can't deal with a dual threat team. A team that passes well and runs well is beyond them. They have to focus on one area to have a chance. I think that's why Pittsburgh is scary. Wilson may not be the QB he once was, but he still has his deep ball accuracy so if we gear up to stop the run they will go over our heads.

Been watching and listening about how the addition of Lattimore could impact the defense...not just from a coverage standpoint but how it could impact the run defense by allowing Chinn to play closer to the line.
If they had Lattimore available, I'd feel more confident in their ability to stop the run.

The formula for a win tomorrow is the same as it's been all season: control the clock and have the defense get just enough stops that allow the Redskins to stay ahead.
BTW, don't sell CRod short. He can be an effective fill in for BRob.
 
He certainly played well last week. I'm on record as not being that enthralled with him - but he made me look dumb against the Giants. McNichols is also a very physical RB. I just don't know if we'll be able to open up the holes necessary - the Steelers are very tough to run on. That's why I think we run enough to keep the Steelers D honest, but that they're mostly going to attack them via the air against a D that is a lot more vulnerable vs. the pass. I think this game hinges on turnovers. The team that creates them wins.
 
I love that they're handing out 50 thousand burgundy towels so that whenever the steelers wave their terrible towels all our fans have to do is wave theirs and the stadium will be awash with burgundy and gold.
So clever and something the old regime would not only never have thought of but would have been too cheap to pay for.
 


I have a hard time giving Arrington any kudos. His playing days were the years I was doing game coverage for ES. I got to see the 'real' Lavar up close and personal and came to the conclusion he was a complete jackass. Made it very hard to root for the guy. As a player, he had some great performances, not going to deny that. But man, talk about a diva...

I know recognizing alumni and honoring past players is a huge priority for the team though, so I guess in the grand scheme of things, this is a positive.

Don't you have to actually win something to be a legend of the game? I mean his only claim to fame in the NFL was knocking out Troy Aikman.

I'll never forget him disrespecting Joe Gibbs when he came back and I'll never forget him running his mouth in the paper about his own team right before a playoff game vs Tampa.

He's a pure moridiot.
 
I think any DC can "stop the run" but in doing so expose themselves to the pass. We all know, in essence DCs let teams run to some extent to not give up the deep pass. Its a chess match where OCs try to suck in defenders then go over the top. I think Whitt will be patient and let them run until they are blue in the face and get impatient. He's been aggressive at the LOS in recent weeks and suddenly our D has finally gotten a mention in fantasy land as a D to stream last week.

In short no teams run game scares me its more their OCs craftiness that is a problem. Do they give their QB the option to change calls when they see Luvu and Chinn ready to run blitz at Harris? Whitt has to counter that and show blitz and confuse the QB by pulling them back. Something JDR would never even try. I have faith in Whitt and our offense which affords him the ability to gamble.

My two cents on Arrington - we never tried to use him to his strengths making him a dumb pick. He needed to be an LT type. We didn't even let him try to block kicks, not even a FG to win the game.

The dude that called Joe Gibbs a coward?...yeah, Lavar's is absolutely a trash individual.

"I called Joe Gibbs a coward for leaving," Arrington said in the Times interview. "You came in, you made some money for your NASCAR team. No one else is going to say that. I'm sure more people thought I was a [jerk] for saying that. Joe wouldn't call me because he knows."

I do enjoy that as a media figure he clearly wishes he had a fanbase that gave a shit about his playing days, but never will.
Nice to keep him from having that.

I agree with this, but with one caveat - the whole “as a precaution” mindset. With Jayden, I believe the risk of aggravating/worsening the injury was a lot smaller than a guy coming off a hamstring injury. The interesting side note to that is what happens when the desire to be cautious runs into a “must win” situation.

As for Rodriguez, I do like him, and have since we drafted him, but he might be closer to a JAG than a BRob clone. However, he’s got decent hands, he’s pretty good in pass pro, and as a runner I think his “super power” (or the closest thing he has to one) is his decisiveness. When he sees a crease, he hits it hard. Combining that with his size/aggressiveness gets him extra yards.
Against a good, disciplined run D though, I think his value is (mostly) reduced to putting hits on guys to hopefully slow them down later in the game. Well, that and picking up a yard or 2 as we continue to commit to the run.
I’d guess we’ll also see a plus play or 2 from him getting the ball in space and/or in pass pro.
 
Prediction - breakout game for Noah Brown. The guy we should have drafted, will be on TMC. And while 5 does spread the ball around, Noah is his clear #2 choice among the wideouts and think Houston is regretting letting him walk and keep Robert Trees over him.

I bet when Houston brass and fans saw Noah's #HailMaryland catch and then Diggs going down, you know there are regrets. I think he'll worsen that wound on Sunday.
 
There's a lot of bad signs in this game. I really want to win, especially at home, but we're going to have to pull a miracle out of our ass.

No CB1, No RB1, No Kicker (which is really important without BRob)

Huge game in 4 days after.

I think we could pull this off and get the win, because I've bought in and believe in this team.

The Eagles game is probably going to be 2 7-3 teams fighting over the East and it doesn't get more important than that, because it's going to come down to that head to head.

I don't have a ton of faith in the Eagles this week though. AJ, Hurts, Goddert injured and Siriani sating dumb shit again. Eagles could lose, but Dallas can't run or stop Barkley, so who knows.
