Official Game Thread - Week 1 - Giants @ Commanders

This was the first game of the three where we really dominated play and denied NY a real chance to get going.
 


I still believe we would’ve drafted Henderson if he fell into our range, but we all see why AP seemed very comfortable to keep letting this RB class pass them by, as the prospect they spent a lot of time with would be waiting for them late in JCM.

What’s interesting is that it also means he has excellent relationships and sources around the league, to know that nobody else would reach for Bill higher, once the draft got to a certain point and a certain number of teams had already taken RB’s. There’s an art to that, tracking rosters and needs and picks around the league as the draft goes on and taking calculated risks based on that.
 
Btw even JP said on his wrap up pod we needed to cool it with the Payne contract year stuff and he had another year on his contract.

Skatteboo had -3 yards? It didn’t feel that way.
 
Gruden is Captain Obvious.

In today’s NFL you don’t win without a solid performance from your quarterback.

Some of those Packers teams would have been 7-9 not 11-5 during the 2010’s without Aaron Rodgers putting the cape on.

You could say the same thing about KC Chiefs first two Super Bowl appearances and Patrick Mahomes, before they assembled a top defense.

His one impressive run was really only about 6 yards of head-first contact with defenders, and then he lost yardage after that.

He did have positive receiving yards

And he earned some swag points for being a bowling ball white dude wearing #44, but they don’t track those on PFF

You’re probably right about the contract year stuff and yes, we’ve seen it with him before. I will however leave the light on for the notion that maybe he actually cares a lot more now that the team is good. Both things can be true.

We definitely need to tread lightly with whatever decision is made but I’m not going to completely bury him just because he got fat on a bag under Rivera.
 
The other thing to keep in mind is that the current state of the roster is still very much in transition and a lot of the times the teams that look the best coming out of the gate are the ones where the core of the teams have been playing together for a few seasons at least. The O-line, the D-line, some of the playmakers.....this team is still in process of becoming great, it's just that the expectation that comes with having an actual franchise QB is that JD5 will be able to make up for whatever is lacking until it is fixed and/or replaced. I look at the Dallas/Philly game and I saw two teams, one that most are predicting to repeat as division champs, and saw a lot of the same Week 1 rust issues going on. After our game was over I mostly had the TV on the 4 game split screen the rest of the day and being honest, there was a lot of sloppy mediocre football being played today. Week 1 has traditionally been a nervous week for the better teams because that rust can sometimes determine the outcome of the game. You don't want defeat snatched from the jaws of victory over a dumb penalty or warm weather fatigue etc etc etc.....Sometimes in Week 1 the better teams find ways to survive and notch the W.

Then JP is a dummy, we aren’t likely letting Payne hit the cap for his number next year and cutting or trading him is low consequence. So for all intents and purposes it is a contract year for him, aka he has a very high chance of being on the open market with this season being the tape that matters. His agent is smart enough to tell him that and he’s preparing and playing accordingly

Agreed, lots of bad football, lots of studs not putting up stud numbers around the league. Lots of disappointing performances from contenders. Ironically the Packers are one of the only teams to turn in a full team performance and dominate. Lucky us

Remember the Giants were the best team in preseasons with the best +- and all that jazz

I’m more of a “play a bit in preseason” than not. But there isn’t a right way to prepare the team.

The goal is also to win the last game, not the first.

Another thing: Quinn and company might have watched preseason and still thought they could win with a B- performance.

I’ll add that all the vet guys DQ rested showed up: the whole DL, Wagner, Ekeler, Ertz, Jayden of course. I’m more of a “play the preseason” guy too, but the guys who sat looked good.

He’s basically playing on the same number this year.

Spotrac seems to be down at the moment but I looked this up a few weeks ago. Payne’s 2026 cap number is like $1.5m more than his cap hit this year.

When the site is back online i will doubt check that.
 
Newton and Kinlaw were acquired in part because Allen was injury prone and Payne never played up to his $90M contract.

At 29 I don’t see Washington resigning Payne when his contract is up.

McLaurin was a unique case at 29/30 getting a big contract.

I think you will see Washington skew younger on contracts going forward, with the possible exception of Laremy Tunsil.
