Official Game Thread - Week 1 - Giants @ Commanders

The one down draft on a winning day where most guys played well was the no show contributions of Sinnott and outside of one kick return, Luke McCaffrey.

Ertz had all the key calls at TE and the team was able to get Chris Moore and Jaylin Lane on the stat sheet in passing game but neither of our high picks from last year did squat.

And then there was that partially blocked punt in part on Sinnott as well

Russ made sense if the Giants could steal wins week 1 and possibly week 2 against the Cowboys. They didn’t and won’t though so now Dart makes more sense, especially if LT Thomas is close to a come back but just couldn’t make it for our game.

The game went about how I was expecting for the first three quarters, I just thought the offense would put it together in the 4th quarter and make the scoreboard even more lopsided, but being Week 1, I am not at all surprised by all the sloppiness and yards left on the field on plays we could clearly see were well drawn up and there were either drops or passes slightly behind the receivers.

I think the Giants D-line did start to play better in the second half and started to disrupt some plays.

How in the world did the Terry challenged catch not get overturned? Were his arms not under the ball the entire process? Was this more a case of the officials just sticking with the call on the field or did they claim they actually saw the ball on the ground?

I don't have a whole to say because Week 1 is a tough one to draw conclusions from. (Last year based on Week 1, I'd never have thought they would go out and run a scoring marathon with Cincy on MNF).

I think the Packers game (unfortunately on a short week) will be a better barometer to come away from with our thoughts on where this team might stand.

Ertz has been enough of a surprise, as far as what he has left in the tank, that it will be doubly disappointing if Sinnott turns out to be no good and not just stuck in his current role due to Ertz still producing solidly. I suppose the bright side is that the longer Ertz remains productive the longer the front office has to find a legitimate replacement should that be the direction they choose to go.

I just hope AP, Quinn & Co. are smart enough to realize that it’s only bc Payne knows we’re liking cutting his contract this offseason that he worked so hard lol. We gotta let him go or trade him to a team willing to restructure him and give him guaranteed money, bc it won’t last. We’ve seen it, and now Quinn has seen the difference in effort as well. He’s capable of that effort all the time and doesn’t give it

The Giants players are not sparked by Russell Wilson.

Dart gives them so much more youth and enthusiasm, which is what you need on a team coming off 3-14 and a season to forget.

The players can see at 36 Wilson is no longer a deep ball passer and once down is not athletic enough to make plays.

Interesting, I just watched the Quinn press conference and he more or less admitted that preseason reps or lack thereof impacts the sharpness of the team -- in response to the penalities, etc.

Even though I didn't love that aproach juxtaposed to the Giants playing their starters I didn't criticize Quinn for it because it might be the better move over the long haul of the season -- I don't know one way or another. But I didn't like it specifically as for their chances in game 1.

Now its game 2. The Packers are another team that played their starters in the preseason, though unfortunately for them, Jordan Love got banged up in the first preseason game. But they looked sharp today. I figure though and hope they knocked the rust off in this game and are ready to go on Thursday. I also think considering they are playing a big time team on the road -- their motivation level is sky high.

That game was interesting because I couldn't figure out if the Packers were that good or if the Lions have just regressed. They generated no pass rush most of the game and it seems as though midnight has struck on Jared Goff because he is sort turning back into the QB the Rams felt wouldn't be able to get it done in the big moments which got the trade to the Lions going. Not to take away anything from the Packers, but my gawd did the Lions just look bad today.

They’d get more spark from Winston as well (and guys love him). They basically just need to dump Russ as soon as possible, he’s a vibe killer at this point in his career and if you’re going to be a pretty bad team, you have to be bad in a way that keeps the players hoping and trying. Fastest way to get fired with Daboll’s poor resume is to lose the locker room at this point, he’ll have to go to Dart to avoid that

I disagree from the point of view that a poor start to the season, losing some winnable games would perhaps sink us in a year with so many competitive teams out there.

We need to beat the Giants, Raiders and other teams we are expected to beat to stay close to the Eagles.

I agree with you that it will be later in the season when we find out if this team can not only stay close to the Eagles and other top contenders but beat them.

The other side of that argument is the Giants played their starters and tried everything they could to be ready for today and they basically got taken to the woodshed for a good ass whooping for most of the game.

Remember the Giants were the best team in preseasons with the best +- and all that jazz

I’m more of a “play a bit in preseason” than not. But there isn’t a right way to prepare the team.

The goal is also to win the last game, not the first.

Another thing: Quinn and company might have watched preseason and still thought they could win with a B- performance.

I never quite understood the Witt hate. Also, I will say I was one of the last to turn on Scott Turner because I saw what he was dealing with at QB, and not just Heinicke, but a one leg Alex Smith, Haskins, Fitzmagic and Wentz. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for longer than most, but in the end, he couldn't adjust at all to anything.

I have an issue in that I didn't like the QB keeper call that far out. I think that has to be a pass in that situation, because if you don't score, you're in a tough spot. Or, if you call the QB keeper, then you coach to clock it and take the FG.

I haven't posted in the BBQ thread about it because last week was absolutely nuts, but I smoked a boneless leg of lamb last weekend and it was by leaps and bounds my best attempt. And the thermometer y'all recommended was fantastic.

We played a pretty average to below average offensive game and still scored 21 points. Left at least 10, probably 17-20 points on the field. (10 = TD to Terry which missed and at least a FG at the end of the half.)

I expected them to win. However, we have TERRIBLE luck with the Giants for 45 years. Whether they are good or bad, we've always struggled with them. That was my biggest concern. But we avoided that bullet.
