Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 1 - Commanders @ Patriots

I do agree that getting whipped by NE -- especially post NE reporters thought they played better in their joint practice too -- might be a tool to get some edge coming into the season in a harmless way.

This point is again nothing about yesterday. I am usng hyperbole to make a point -- but my fear is does this team have some Rocky 3 vibe coming into the season. Yeah they didn't win it all but exceeded expectatons by a mile. And the team was celebrated for it and still is by the national media for the most part.

As Quinn gets asked how does it feel to be the hunted now versus being the hunters last year. Quinn had a good response saying they will always be the hunters. But I still think to feel being the hunters - you need to feel some adversity. And feeling adversity from a preseason week is a healthy and benign way to do it.

Going back to game 1 -- the Giants I'd gather really really would be hungry to beat us. they are the underdogs, the team that's disrespected. This team beat them last year but barely both times and the first game was a fluke with the Giants missing a kicker. I can see the Giants wanting to knock this team off its perch. Will this team match their energy-drive? Hope so. And I do think some adversity in the preseason will help.
People think of lions as the king of the jungle and its supreme hunter, but lions are also very lazy. It's better not to think of yourself as the lion especially when you aren't. We are the predator still trying to climb up the food chain that's got to watch its back.

Yeah for me it was the penalities that bothered me. So sloppy especially on special teams -- where it was coming from starters too like Owens, and Reaves, etc.

The kicker for me was the idotic shove from Ben Sinnott when a player was out of bounds. I could take the beating much easier if it wasn't a sloppy exercise by this team.
I didn't watch the game, but I would echo the concern on teams. A lot of the players who did play are going to make the team specifically to play special teams. If they can't do that, then that aint so good.

I'm sure Quinn will work himself into quite a lather about it. I can't imagine the ST film review will be a family friendly affair.

I also worry that the team is too reliant on Daniels as a get out of jail free card. They need to do their parts. There will be games where they have to lift him up.

I'm going to be in St. Maarten. And will be reasonably happy to miss the first preseason game to stare at the ocean. :)

I don't think we have one. However, you might post the question in the game day thread, or even start the Where Do I Watch Games Online thread.
Love it there!

The League as a whole has gotten too soft. Most teams are so scared of injury that they bubble wrap their starters in preseason so it's only logical that it takes until Mid October for them to round into form. "September is basically training camp"- Bill Belichick

Used to be, starters played a series, maybe two in game 1 and then maybe a quarter in game 2. Then it was a whole half and a series after half in game three and then game 4 was for the depth players. The quality of play was better in September back then. Pretty crappy now.

But they want these teams playing 17 games now with the same archaic roster rules and limits of the last 40 years because although ownership wants more money, they still don't want to pay for depth.

The minimum thing I want to see in preseason is competence. Can you do the basics. None of that was on display last night.
I think you make a really good point about the roster rules. But here's the rub: the NFLPA does NOT want the rosters expanded, because that means the current players in the league will get less of the pie. So the players have some culpability in this.

What has happened is every year the pie gets bigger, due to TV contracts, merch sales, whatever. The basics of how the salary cap for each team is set is (Total League Revenue/2)/32. In other words, total projected league revenue, and the players get ~50% of that, the owners/teams get the other 50%. (It's a little less, but let's just keep the math simple.

Then they break that by the 32 teams, and you have the salary cap per team.

And because the pie keeps getting bigger, and the number of people eating stays the same, that's why you can have a $60m AAV QB.

If the NFLPA was to relent and allow 10 more players on the roster, then that would automatically decrease the size of the slices of pie for each of the current players.

So we end up with what we end up with. There have been a few tweaks to the rules, for example expanded practice squads, eligibility to be on the practice squad, and practice squad elevations. All of these are mechanisms to get around expanding rosters.

What the NFPA wants to do is expand the rosters and therefore take a larger proportion of the overall revenue. Which some could argue would be fair. The owners do not want to give up a higher percentage of revenue, because they are arguing costs running the team, everything from stadium lease costs and maintenance, salaries for coaches and other team personnel and all kinds of other things are also growing proportionally.

So there's the stalemate. And we end up with what we have.

We own a timeshare we bought in 2010 before we were married. Absent a few years where we couldn't come due to the island being blown away by Hurricane Irma, we come just about every year. Normally around Thanksgiving, but occasionally during the summer. This year was a summer year. It's been great, about to head home sadly.

It's one of my favorite places. I just bought a place near Simpson Bay, and am moving there in December.

I don't know Voice - I think there are barriers but like with anything, those can be worked through if the desire were there.

If the NFL expanded the active roster to 75 (just for arguments sake), obviously those extra 22 spots are not going to be highly paid upper-tier players. It would give guys who are probably borderline late round picks or UDFAs more of a shot to get playing time or to show they belong. It might add some expense but you are talking lower paid players and you could probably offset the cost by eliminating the Practice Squad entirely.

It eliminates teams having to go out on the street to find players in a bad injury season. It would be better for players who would get more experience, and better for the teams being able to actively look at and train a larger group of players.

The arguments against aren't as much about money (imho) is that folks will argue there is not enough talent to fill that many spots on 32 team's active roster. I don't believe that's true, I just think it is hard for those 'hidden gem' players to get noticed and even more so, get an on-the-field opportunity if they don't have the pedigree.

I think eventually the NFL will be forced to increase the active roster size, but it's probably going to take a season or two where half the playoff team's QBs and skill position players are backups where the quality of the product is clearly impacted for everyone to see before they swallow hard and make changes.

Really disappointed they are resting their starters. As I have been posting DQ didn't coach scared all season, don't be scared now.

Other than Daniels Amos may be the best player out of the last 2 drafts. In limited reps Connely looked solid.

The player I was most anxious to see was Jacoby Croskey-Merrit. He showed exactly what I was hoping for. But for God's sake stop calling him Bill. You are calling a game not having dinner with him. Use the last name like every other player.

A bit relieved to see Newton play well, alas against backups. I'm still a bit worried about him.

How about Reaves? That was fun to watch.

The grouper fingers at Simpson Bay Yacht club are the best!!

Oh awesome! We talk about moving here every year. We thought about buying in one of the new developments at Cupacoy, but the timing stunk because I had just quit my job.

Agree with Abraham. Use it.

I was watching Finlay's postgame podcast and he goes well NE wanted it morre, it was more meaningful to them, etc. OK that's fine in the preseason.

But during the season, my take is of course don't be the team that doesn't want it as much as the opponent.

Good point below about Goldman. He had a bad run stopping grade from PFF last season -- years back he had great scores. But is it possible he's lost a step. NE had no problem running the ball yesterday including up the gut where Goldman played.
