Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 1 - Commanders @ Patriots

I forgot one thing from the JP Podcast (and I apologize if I mix the two up, I listed to them back to back, and sometimes retain facts and forget the source. But I'm pretty sure this was from JP.

Luke McCaffery had some type of illness before the game. Apparently he gave it a go, and then went right into the locker room. JP said he saw him before the game and he didn't look right or well, I can't remember the exact term he used.

So, that might be a good sign.

Also, I think it was JP who said he thought Sinnott had a pretty good game. One of Hartman's best throws was to Sinnott on a third down, apparently.

Wish they still did the gradual cuts during preseason. I think that trying to cater to 90 guys the entire camp must be tough.

I actually think it gives bottom of the roster guys more of a chance. Some guys likely used to get lost on the wash when the difference between 2 weeks with a team and 45 days could be massive. Not necessarily meaning they would be starters but performing enough to earn a few more looks could be all the difference

  • Battle for 3rd string QB: JP invoked "arm strength" when talking about Hartman, questioning whether he has enough arm strength to throw to the outside. They then got into a short and stupid thing about [REDACTED] who overcame this by making quick decisions, which he didn't, and he sucks, and shouldn't be in the league. But I digress.

As long as we are digressing, I keep seeing these little digs at Taylor Heinicke and it irritates me, especially the continuation of this weird and disrespectful ES convention of not naming the man. Admittedly, he lacks the size and arm strength to be an NFL starter, but why the hate? It’s cool that a kid who played at ODU and slept on his sister’s couch managed to make an NFL career for himself through a little luck and tenacity.

You also have to put his tenure in it’s historical context. These are the only quarterbacks since Mark Rypien to post winning record for Washington: Brad Johnson, Tony Banks, Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke, and Jayden Daniels. That’s it. Heinicke’s 12-11-1 record is even more impressive when you consider Haskins before him was 3-10 and Howell after him was 5-13.

Can you really blame the fans for liking an underdog who won games in the context of so much futility? People love an underdog and a winner, and there wasn’t much to love at the time, so I understsnd why people chanted his name when Carson Wentz was in.

Luckily we seem to have a franchise quarterback, so it is all water under the bridge now, but this is like the tenth time I’ve seen that [redacted] nonsense on here. I just really don’t get the hate.

Ok. But he was categorically terrible and a number of us basically had it arguing with a whole bunch of people he could actually play. Historically context is he was terrible. He wasn’t put in a bad situation, he created part of the bad situation because of how awful he was.

Which is where the nickname came from because just mentioning his name triggered people.

And I really wouldn’t take it too seriously. Galdi still calls Kirk Cousin “you know who” for the same reason. It’s a joke.

If you would like to discuss this further, I’m happy to, but let’s not derail the thread further, let’s take it to the Washington Redskins Football Team Commanders history thread.

Heinicke was a great story. He was a Cinderella whose foot almost fit the slipper. If he had an arm equal to his guts, we would have hit the jackpot. The arm thing was something he really had no chance of overcoming especially with the play calling we had.

Still, I was happy to root for him while he was here. It wasn't his fault. He took his talent as far as he could.

And good ol' Graham Gano went 3-3 all from 50+ in the first half for the G-Men. Maybe a solid kicker will fall into our laps as a camp casualty.

Who cut Gano? Ron? Why?

Gano got cut 8 years before Ron. He got cut because he was inconsistent. We rolled with Billy Cundwhiff for a few games before Cobra Kai rescued us. The Gano we had to the Cobra Kai we had was a good upgrade in my book. Shame Kai didn't have more leg, but he was money in his prime.

Heinicke was a great Stockholm Syndrom story. His arm is what influenced the playcalling, and Rivera's instistance of playing it back with Heinicke instead of giving Howell more than one game was a costly waste. Scott Turner wasn't amazing by any means, but he never got the credit he deserved for gameplanning around a QB who threw lame ducks past 20 yards.

Good grief ! There are about 10 posts in this thread about your timeshare in the Caribbean and you're worried about derailing the thread ???

What Faithful Fan said about TH needed saying, and I for one applaud him for saying it.

I think you make a lot of great points about Taylor. I'm not sure that it is statistcally reasonable to compare QB win-loss records in isolation (whether positive or negative) especially over relatively short durations. Of course the quality of QB play is a major factor in all game outcomes, but I don't think comparing one QBs 'record' to another's is all that meaningful.

I think Taylor earned most fans respect and admiration. The only issue I have ever had is with fans who wanted to discount his obvious physical limitations. He had them. He was able to play well beyond his physical abilities many times just due to toughness, grit, and putting his body at risk. I actually think the vast majority of fans admired who Heinicke was and will root for him in the future. I don't think the membership here has anything but respect and fondness for the young man.

This conversation IS better suited for the history thread, so if we want to continue it, let's move it there, and keep it friendly.

Taylor heinicke was a shit stain on our franchise and talking him up is embarrassing. Absolutely failures. And the Caribbean is not comparable to living in shit ass Virginia Ohio or whatever.

Arguing for Taylor is like saying the 2 inch club is right. It's hysterical. I'm still shocked we won anything in two years. We went from the worst QB to the worst OC in back to back years and we deserve to be pointed at and laughed at. Anyone defending it sounds like slapping clown shoes.

Hey Hail Raiser keep it friendly and let's move the discussion back to the History thread please.

Typically a few off-topic posts crop up, and then we divert somewhere else if there is somewhere else more appropriate to divert. But the nature of message boards, a few off topic posts are going to come in here and there. Then somebody will realize we're off topic and course correct.

And I applaud your use of good grief. I love me some Charlie Brown. :)

I don't know of the specific posts you are referring to. But IMO the hate is more directed at the fanbois who propped up this guy as something he was not. Those posts you are talking about have an "I told you so" slant I am thinking. He was a cool story for a few months, I know I got sick of the love Heineke continued to get long after it was clear that he is a mid-level backup if that.

Please take all the talk of all former QBs here:

I know not to read too much into preseason, remember Osaka yada yada, but I just saw the Giants beat New England 42-10.

I’m afraid the Giants will be better and we will be worse than the oddsmakers think, definitely worried about week 1.

I think the important thing to remember about our game vs. the Patriots is we didn't play 29 starters, and they played theirs.

I do think the Giants are going to be better than suck this year, and I think week 1 is going to be a challenge. So is week 2 for that matter.

That said, I don't read anything into preseason results in any way, even for the starters.
