on defense, I believe they had some starters in the second half. It was hard to tell because those reporting the game were too in love with themselves so were deficient in letting us know what was going on it was hard to tell. They used their second string QB much of the game. None of our top 2 played

Yup, that is correct. I expect a much better looking team on the 18th. I’m watching Coach Quinn’s press conference, and you can tell he is pissed about the energy level even if it was scrubs.

I like what we did. We put individuals in top competition from our bottom 60. We might find a gem in the rough. It just makes good football sense. If we win the Super Bowl down the line I am not going to say "Oh shit!!! we lost to New England in a preseason game/"

It’s hard to love losing 48-18, even in the preseason, but DQ is a good coach and will make a point of it, and it is better to learn now before the games count.

I'm painfully aware of that.
At least at RFK, you were given the option of opting out of the pre-season and only paying for the regular season games.

That is why I eventually gave up my ST. Paying Broadway prices to watch understudies have a dress rehearsal is ridiculous .

My one worry about the preseason is are they going to play their starters?

Bengals got off to a slow start last season, so they said to help avoid that they are playing their starters this preseason and did so from game 1.

the Giants, our first game matchup said the same. NE clearly cared about getting their starters some game reps in the first preseason game.

NE reporters mostly said NE were the stronger team in their practice session. Keim somewhat agreed. Finlay seemed to be the outlier on it. Then we watch NE give them a beating yesterday and it wasn't just their 1's versus our 2's. The last three quarters was their backups whipping our backups.

But what bothered me about it was the sloppiness and lack of energy-oomph. NE in contrast looked fired up.

I am not saying i am concerned yet. But I am a little concerned that the Giants will beat us in game 1 -- if we came at this with little game reps in the preseason and the Giants get more game ready.

I like Quinn a lot. But he does have one thing in common with Jay and Rivera and that is they don't give their starters much reps in the preseason. And especially with Jay we expected to see a slow beginning. The first two games in particular with Jay were meh even in their good seasons.

As good as last season was, they looked flat and unready against Tampa in game 1, and didn't look hot in game 2 either last season. then they took off. Their schedule is too tough IMO to be chilled if they go 0-2. That's my concern.

This point has nothing to do with yesterday. My other concern is can this team come at this season with the same fire. There is so much talk about this can be a SB season. there does feel like some self-congratulatory talk at times about that last season coming from the team -- do they lose their edge? I don't know. But its not uncommon for an upstart team to follow the next season with somewhat of a crash.

I do think though Quinn is very conscious of this dynamic judging by what he's said, so I don't expect a step back season. But it wouldn't shock me if they get off to a slow start.

I do agree that getting whipped by NE -- especially post NE reporters thought they played better in their joint practice too -- might be a tool to get some edge coming into the season in a harmless way.

This point is again nothing about yesterday. I am usng hyperbole to make a point -- but my fear is does this team have some Rocky 3 vibe coming into the season. Yeah they didn't win it all but exceeded expectatons by a mile. And the team was celebrated for it and still is by the national media for the most part.

As Quinn gets asked how does it feel to be the hunted now versus being the hunters last year. Quinn had a good response saying they will always be the hunters. But I still think to feel being the hunters - you need to feel some adversity. And feeling adversity from a preseason week is a healthy and benign way to do it.

Going back to game 1 -- the Giants I'd gather really really would be hungry to beat us. they are the underdogs, the team that's disrespected. This team beat them last year but barely both times and the first game was a fluke with the Giants missing a kicker. I can see the Giants wanting to knock this team off its perch. Will this team match their energy-drive? Hope so. And I do think some adversity in the preseason will help.

Yeah this is exactly it for me. I don't dismiss this game. I don't think the team looking nonenergized and sloppy as heck, and some dudes trying to make this team looking awful as being irrelevant just because its a preseason game.

But....

I think its an easy way to get this team's attention that nothing is going to be handed to them this season just because they won 12 games last year.

I get their starters weren't playing. But if even Keim is agreeing with NE reporters that NE won both lines of scrimmages in the joint practice as to the starters--at a minimum I think there is a chance it was noticeable that one of the worst teams in the NFL last year held up more than fine against our starters -- and if so adding this game into the equation -- its somewhat of a wakeup call to get this team ready for the season

Used to be, starters played a series,maybe two in game 1 and then maybe a quarter in game 2. Then it was a whole half and a series after half in game three and then game 4 was for the depth players. The quality of play was better in September back then. Pretty crappy now.

But they want these teams playing 17 games now with the same archaic roster rules and limits of the last 40 years because although ownership wants more money, they still don't want to pay for depth.

The minimum thing I want to see in preseason is competence. Can you do the basics. None of that was on display last night.

Yeah for me it was the penalities that bothered me. So sloppy especially on special teams -- where it was coming from starters too like Owens, and Reaves, etc.

The kicker for me was the idotic shove from Ben Sinnott when a player was out of bounds. I could take the beating much easier if it wasn't a sloppy exercise by this team.
