Official Game Thread - Playoffs Week 2 - Commanders @ Lions

What a wonderful experience I had with my son on Sunday night. It was magical and one we wont forget anytime soon. We had that stadium on lock. It was such a joy to share the moment with so many skins fans.
The team came to play and was amazing. I expect the squad to bring the same energy this weekend in Detroit. Anybody, Anytime, Anywhere.... LFG..!

Here's a question that comes from NFL Radio today.

8pm Saturday Night. Redskins win the toss.

Do you defer and try to play the possession game? You know, possession before the half and get the ball coming out of the half.
OR
Do you take the ball and try to go score first and put as much pressure as possible on the Lions to start the game?

I think I'd take the ball and try to put max pressure on a team that might be rusty to start.

What say you?

For what its worth....always take the ball in the 2nd half. Goal is to hold the ball at the end of the 1st half and start out with it the 2nd half. I always felt it was like stealing a possession. Plus, if in actual time, I can keep the opponents offense off the field for what could be upwards to 30 mins....just felt like it gave us an edge.

looking good that we didnt get the

I agree with you, it's crazy that all through my childhood watching football games on TV, teams would always win the opening coin toss and elect to receive the ball, that trend started to change the last 10 years or so, with most teams electing to kick off to start the game. I really think the Madden game had alot to do with the trend changing, mostly everyone I ever played in Madden chose to kick off to start the game. I'm sure all these current coaches had played Madden at one time or another.

I think it depends on the psychology of the team you're facing. Some teams are really bad at coming from behind. So, the moment you get a lead they feel pressured. With those teams, I feel like getting the ball first can be big. It's also a statement of confidence. It says, "You can't stop us." and if they can't it gets worse.

But wanting the ball to start the second half has become the most popular thing to do in recent years. The idea of "doubling up" or "stealing a posession" is what most teams believe in.

We need to drive and score to start the game. Suck all the cool and all the energy out of that stadium early. Put doubt in Detroit's players minds. F being fixated on deferring because Bellichek did it (and is out of the league haha) and in doing so end up facing that powerful offense to start the game. We all saw for decades teams electing to receive and being no worse for andre ware. It may sound crazy to defererer's but we can still end up with the final possession of the first half and thus end up with both the first AND last possession. Isn't that worth anything? A goal of every coach is to forge the biggest lead in the first half, right? A good DC can use halftime to squash 2nd half first drive ambitions. Curious - do teams score on a disproportionally high rate on THE first possession 2nd half drives? With the defer craze its worth a look. What about the team that gets the ball 2nd on a potentially short field. Do teams that defer win a disproportionally high rate of games? What is the success rate of actually getting the ball 2 times in a row? Its simple analytics we will never see.

I want Goff and that offense ice cold standing on the sideline for as long as possible to start the first half.

I saw a presser with Kliff and he said Quinn makes him keep running even when it doesnt work which may be exacerbating our concerns about BRob. His 2 yard average is paying dividends by keeping defenses honest and off Jayden's back.

Quinn has been very consistent on this all year. He will defer and take the ball to start the 2nd half. They have been very good at scoring late in the 1st half and scoring again to open the 3rd quarter. If you can do that, you can get up to 14 points without the other team getting a chance to score.

There is also another reason I like that strategy, although I’ve never heard a coach admit this. The home crowd is usually fired up to start the game. So the home team wants the crowd to be roaring to start the game and help their D. Whereas at the start of the 2nd half, there are a lot of people still waiting for the bathroom, waiting for food, etc. The crowd is never as full or as loud to start the 3rd quarter. So if you are the road team, you get the ball in front of a less raucous crowd. If you are the home team, your offense gets the ball and your crowd is quiet while people are still filling up their seats.

But as I said at the start, Quinn has taken the ball to start the second half almost every time. A few teams have won the toss and taken the ball, but Quinn has deferred all year. I don’t expect that to change this week.

Depends on the opponent but against Detroit I want to receive. I don’t want to risk being down 14-0 early because we have one bad possession. In a lower scoring, defensive style game Im good with deferring. But for the most part, I want the ball. It’s much easier to play with the lead then from behind. It’s not a huge difference though. Either way you’re not “stealing“ a possession. You still want to get the ball last at the end of the first half.

Is the run option hurting our running backs? Seems to me that the handoff/nonhandoff could delay the backs a fraction of a second. Could that make a difference? I mean the run option should obviously benefit them too since the ends can't crash and the linebackers have to be more disciplined, but I'm wondering if that extra beat is costing BRob and the others.

Too bad we didn’t meet up. Did you guys park in Al Lopez? It was a Washington takeover there.

It's good to use a little to help keep defenders honest or on their toes. I however am not a fan of seeing much of it. In general our run game minus JD5 has been insignificant over the last number of games. It's a love hate relationship seeing our prize possession running with the ball due to the hits he takes.

We really need our OL to step it up, they have not been stellar. We also need to say out of 2nd and 3rd and longs. Running BRob up the middle for 2 yards doesn't cut the mustard. He has had opportunity to run when not in run option and hasn't proven worthy for the most part for the second half of the season.

I did not see the presser but heard from friends. So it sounds like, as I guessed from what we were seeing, Kliff is just more interested in passing. He basically said he likes that Quinn reminds him because sometimes he forgets, and he said he has gained more appreciation for it this season.

So, I think it is probably true he doesn't spend as much time on it, worrying about how creative and effective the plays are. It's something it would be nice to see improvement on, going forward. The running plays in some games have been very uncreative, and yes we have other problems, but scheme can make those problems look even worse. I think that is what we had going on to a pretty good degree this year. There were some real playcalling issues for the run-game in terms of broadcasting what we were doing in particular.

A lot of that depends on design and execution. You can probably tell if it matters based on exactly what you said - do you see hesitation? If you don't see any hesitation, there may be a problem that needs to be ironed out. Sometimes you do see a defensive player gamble on one, and in that case it is up to the QB to make the right call. Tough.

My issue is on too many of our running plays, I don't see even a microsecond of hesitation. That means we have tendencies, whether in formations, playcalling (down/distance/formation combination)... hard to tell. Something is triggering the defense to be especially confident of a running play in certain situations. That is where I get really annoyed, because even the best running backs in the world are going to struggle if the defense has 98% certainty on what is going to happen next, in 2025. The other aspect is that our OL is not able to control the LoS at any particular point very well, so it definitely makes it that much harder.

I know man, I really wanted to link. We were rushing down from Jacksonville to make it in time and we got in at about 7:55 so we walked in and were basically sitting down just before kickoff. I wasnt shocked our fans tookover too much, as it was similar to 2005 and our last playoff win, that was also a day to remember. What a day though. Lets get this W on Saturday!!

It really doesn't matter.

Let the Lions win the toss and decide.

Almost forgot about Crowder for a minute. Has he been injured? He had a game or 2 actually contributing as a WR but not recently.
