Scouting reports on Amerson-NFL

STRENGTHS Possesses size, physicality and athleticism to be a starting NFL defensive back. Very confident, attacks aggressively down hill, both in jumping routes, and in defending the run. Receiver-like ball skills allow him to high-point passes on jump balls and make quarterbacks pay for trying to fit a ball between levels of zone coverage. Also adjusts well to low and wide throws despite his size. Flashes agility. Will pop receivers to dislodge the ball and running backs coming to his side of the field. Wrap-up tackler, closes quickly to the ball when attacking receivers in off-coverage and against east-west runs. Works through receiver blocks in the run game with strong hands and quickness.
WEAKNESSES Some teams will project him to safety unless he proves hip flexibility, agility, and speed in workouts. Backpedal will be tested by quicker receivers eating up his cushion at the next level. Takes time to transition forward from pedal, comes out of his breaks a bit slow. Can be deceived by double moves. Doesn't display run assignment integrity. Plays a lot of off-coverage and zone, needs experience in the man and press coverages in which he should excel given his physical ability.

One of my good friends is a big NC State fan...says Amerson is good but that State didn't have a pass rush to help him out this past season.

Seeing talk about moving him to FS...

PFT reporting that the Jets may cut Sanchez. Welcome to the CFL Mark.

Mine said nobody threw at him this past year..

He's not a huge kid, but he is aggressive and pretty physical for his size. One thing I'll say for him, if he gets near a ball, it's in his hands. He ain't Carlos Rogers - and that might be a refreshing change.

Could it be we took a CB/S hybrid because it's the ONLY DB we'll draft until the 6th or 7th, if then? Just a thought.

This threw me for such a loop I can't even guess what we'll do in the 3rd round. Could be Williams or Wheaton at WR or it could be someone that makes sense.

Yeah, we needed a CB but was this kid the BPA there? Maybe this was all Raheem's decision.

Obviously not BPA... possibly a new term used for us...

Best player available at a position of need, maybe.

Amerson says that the Redskins confirmed he will be playing corner not moving to safety #Redskins #NFLDraft

We can be sure that someone we thought the team should have taken at 51 might be there in the 3rd round. Isn't this how the draft usually works?

Maybe things will even out for all the people concerned about the Amerson pick :)

LOL, I hear ya.

Was looking at this Swearinger kid as a "rather of had". Plus it'd be cool to call him Swedgin, like Woo did in Deadwood series.

This pick goes back to the way Shannahan views picks. He looks at their best plays and believes through coaching they can get them to play at that level consistently.

I think we're being a little harsh - he is a tough, physical corner with very good hands - had the best defensive back performance in the country in 2011, a sub-par year last season, but NC State had a down year overall.

He can definitely play - and he's very aggressive. I'd rather have an aggressive, physical corner with great hands, and coach him up on being more disciplined.
