Thank you for this thread, Derek - very interesting and insightful.
I wonder if the coaches are seeing the same sort of thing? You would think so, especially when the organization seems intent on doing something significant at the Quarterback position this offseason. It kind of sounds like their way of saying that there is one missing piece to this puzzle that otherwise fits together.
The examples are encouraging in the sense that they show some of our secondary targets are getting open, contrary to what many thought throughout the season. It's even more encouraging in the sense that these are all examples where I believe Curtis Samuel, wasn't even on the field (as was the case for pretty much the entire year). Would Samuel's availability at 100% health have painted an even better picture? I tend to believe it might have.
When you factor in the types of examples you have referenced, and also keep in mind that what was supposed to be our number 2 target (Samuel) was pretty much unavailable in 2021, it points to the fact that maybe this WR group isn't in dire straits.
I personally do believe we need to keep adding to the WR group this offseason, as you want some insurance in the event that Samuel's long layoff has a lingering effect, and you also want some protection in the event that Brown doesn't take a major step in 2022.
But do we need to add in a significant way and by spending major dollars at WR? I don't believe so. That money needs to go to Terry. In the meantime, there are plenty of "under the radar" types in this year's free agency class at receiver with some experience that could potentially come in and offer some decent production and give a boost to the receiver room. That's the type of player I hope we target at receiver at least come the start of the new league year.
