Well, it's the second week of being strong armed into doing this... Totally at my own discretion, of course. No one is making me do this... Not a soul. Nope. No one.
I'm kidding. I am a willing participant in this endeavor.
Anyways, I saw there was a football game yesterday.
Last week, there was a bit of debate on Kingsbury and his inability to produce in the second half of seasons and it being a growing trend. I was a little bit less eager to jump on the bandwagon, but the claim had some merit. Aside from 2019, his offenses production had dropped off significantly in the second half of seasons... At least in terms of points per game, anyways. But still, I think there was a lot of context missed in that argument. In his entire tenure with Arizona he managed a 1,000 yard receiver one time and a 1,000 yard rusher zero times. That is significant.
You could say part of that is on his scheme and play calls and I'd be forced to agree. But you can also say that his personnel has influenced him.
But regardless, there was a bit of a growing trend this year with the Commander offense that seemed to have matched the proposed regression of the past. But again, there was a lot of context. Andrew Wylie, for example. Biadasz being dinged up. Allegretti playing through some injuries. Coleman being banged up. Oh, and the starting quarterback had broken ribs. And of course, we played a gauntlet of Pittsburgh, followed by Philly, followed by Dallas on three days of rest.
That is nightmare fuel for a team. There isn't a lot of rest. You're banged up. We hadn't had a bye... and that part of our schedule was absolutely brutal.
Fast forward to yesterday.
42 points. 29 first downs. 463 yards of offense. 40 minutes and 13 seconds in time of possession.
Of course, it's possible that THIS game is a statistical outlier. But I tend to think that Kingsbury is fine and that he has ran into some buzzsaws of bad luck as he has progressed in his career. I actually think that Kingsbury and the offensive staff deserve a ton of credit for what they have done this season with this offense.
Jayden Daniels had his first career three passing touchdown game. He accounted for four total touchdowns.
Brian Robinson rushed for 100 yards. With four games to go he needs 360 yards to be Kingsbury's first 1,000 yard NFL rusher. Oh, and Jayden Daniels would only need 410 to be a 1,000 yard rusher as well. Reality is that Jayden won't get there. But Robinson just might.
And then there is this other guy that wears #17. He is #6 all-time in receiving yards in Washington football history. He only trails:
#1 Art Monk (12,026 yards in 14 seasons)
#2 Charley Taylor (9,110 yards in 14 seasons)
#3 Gary Clark (8,742 yards in 8 seasons)
#4 Santana Moss (7,867 yards in 10 seasons)
#5 Bobby Mitchell (6,492 yards in 7 seasons)
#6 Terry McLaurin (6,179 yards in 6 seasons)
Based on pace, he is ahead of every receiver on this list aside from Gary Clark. Pretty impressive.
Let's talk defense now.
Bobby Wagner, in 13 games, has 104 tackles.
Incredible accomplishment.
However, our defense is led by one man. Our Tribal Chief. Frankie Luvu.
Mr. Luvu has 82 tackles, 8 sacks, 9 tackles for loss, 5 PD, 1 forced fumble.
This is a defense that started out as being, what looked like, a historically bad defense. Now, Coach Whitt has helped guide this defense to 22.8 points allowed per game... And we are lacking some talent in key positions on the defense.
Oh, and let's not forget that our defensive line, which was supposed to have been the best in the NFL with Payne, Allen, Young and Sweat, is just as productive with only one of those players: Daron Payne. Dante Fowler leads the team with 8.5 sacks. Armstrong and Payne have each added 3. Ferrell 2.5.
This is a team that is playing above the sum of its parts, which is a good sign regardless of record.
It means that individually the talent may not be on the highest end, but the coaches and FO have acquired players that they believe fit the mold of what they need to be successful and they have found success.
And, notably, our best corner is a kid who was drafted to play in the slot and quite frankly should be playing there. But he was moved to fill a void and boy has he. Mike Sainristil has been nothing short of spectacular. And while I don't believe he will win defensive rookie of the year - the kid deserves to be in the conversation. What a great surprise he has been.
Everything isn't all sunshine, though.
Our special teams continue to be a major concern moving forward.
And the truth is, they've been snakebit since before the season. McManus' legal issues began the spiral. Then we found Seibert and things looked good. And then he got hurt and things spiraled.
Zane Gonzalez missing two field goals yesterday was not helpful to the cause.
Our return and coverage units haven't lit the sky on fire, either. That unit needs to be shored up quickly if this team is going to be able to compete in the short term and the long term.
The good news is, right now, we are sitting in 7th and in the playoff picture.
