(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

Florio, loving every bit of it. Just so many lies in that advocates statement. Anyway ...

In a 2002 interview, Wetzel said: "It made us all so proud to have an Indian on a big-time team. It’s only a small group of radicals who oppose those names. Indians are proud of Indians."

I believe Blackie was right.

The team should ignore them.

Hell I would make as many popular jerseys as possible for people that played under the original Redskins logo. Too many great players to name. They will sell, guaranteed

He just likes clicks. Adores em. Needs em to keep his NBC deal or whatever. He is sometimes correct but always disingenuous in his intentions. One of our most prolific click-whores
Galdi calls him “fake news Florio”

Galdi is never mean to anybody ever.

That’s telling.

galdi has good instincts then. I think Florio is still watchable and can entertain at times...he's like a more muted Skip Bayless that is a bit more factual...but, yeah. he's a dick.

I think if people out there REALLY believed that it (the name & logo) was racist, they would be screaming at teepublic to stop offering all of those Redskins options that they have. They would be screaming at Donna (TX) High School for calling themselves the Redskins and using the Redskins logo (along with the roughly 30+ other US high schools still using Redskins name & imagery.

I also don't think the front office believes it is racist either, otherwise they wouldn't have offered that merchandise with the logo on it.

As others have mentioned, I think the long game may be in play. A return to Redskins when they move back to the old RFK site makes the most sense. I'm trying not to be TOO hopeful, but this recent merchandise drop has me re-thinking things a bit...

And Al Galdi is the man. I miss when he would show up on Czabe's show for the "HEY GALDI!" segments...

To clarify my personal position, I am theorizing the long game could be in play for another name to coincide with RFK 2.0. Something that fully embraces the Greco-Roman Warrior branding they are adopting. Perhaps better than the Commanders name does currently. If we are still the Commanders the day the stadium opens I will believe at that time the issue is permanently settled. I do not believe they will ever fully reinstate the Redskins brand. I think the days or an overtly Native American full time brand (even with a different name) are over in Washington.

That’s pretty much where I was recently as well. Although I really have no allegiance to the Greco-Roman thing. But recent events do have me leaving the door cracked open to the possibility that the Snyder name will be kicked to the curb along with the dump of a stadium in Landover. Whether it’s going back to Redskins or choosing a new name that is actually popular with fans, I would be thrilled either way. I know it’s silly, but the superstitious fan in me truly feels like the C-name is cursed. At this point, I think it’s been long enough that I can safely say I will always despise it.

Speaking of He Who Shall Not Be Named, it sounds like his plan to buy a UK soccer club has gone nowhere...

Well, congrats to whatever soccer team dodged that bullet. He may be invisible to the rest of the NFL, but we are still feeling the pain of what he did to our franchise and probably will for a while longer. We will get there eventually though, and this is a good reminder that we should all be thankful that he and his fashionista wife are gone.

I am still astounded.

You make the bucks to purchase your favorite team (or so he claimed) and you proceed to go on a nearly quarter century rampage. NOBODY can talk any sense into you. You not only wreck the team, but also wreck yourself to the point that you go into exile. He's like Jeremy Irons at the end of Damage.

This is the branding thread. If you guys want to talk about Voldemort, take it to a more appropriate thread please.

The sellout of the Skins stuff online is telling. They could probably make a mint just selling that stuff alone. Let's face it, the name "commanders" is the last skid mark Lord Farquuad left on this teams underwear. It needs to go to finally purge the team of the decades of shit karma. Seems to me like the team is sloooooooooooooooooooowly easing back to the old name/imagery. The only real obstacle I see is Goodell. Hopefully by the time the new stadium is done, they'll be ready to bring the team and the old name back to DC

They're trying to appease a segment of the fanbase and I think that's fine. I don't think it's realistic to entertain the idea that the name will come back, or the logo at least not as the primary image. I do agree that any name other than the one associated with Dan Snyder would have been better. People say 'there is no name other than Redskins that fans would embrace'. That's true - but it's also not an either/or thing. As you said, 'Commanders' was such a lazy, uninspired choice, exactly what you'd expect from the Snyders, Jason Wright, and Ron Rivera. It is forever associated with those people, and for that reason, any other name would have been preferable.

Agreed. While past evidence showed the majority of everyone did not find the name offensive, policies are often enacted by small but loud groups. They would return in an instant. Harris would have to have possess a great deal of spine to deal with it.

Dump Commanders and replace it with Redsomething. Redwolves, Redhawks, Red Storm, Redhogs, Redspears, etc.

Will do, although to be fair, “Voldemort“ and his henchmen are the ones who foisted this ridiculous brand on us. But you’re right, and if I am the culprit I apologize.

I don’t care what sort of spine Harris would need to deal with it, personally for me I don’t want to deal with it. I just want to focus on football. Commanders sucks ass, but I don’t want the constant murmurs and controversy around the team anymore. It’s too much of a distraction and sucks the fun out of it. I just want to be a normal franchise.

I don’t care that they keep selling old brand stuff to appease certain people (and allegedly maintain trademarks). Good for you guys who need it. Someone posted months ago about having an overlay on their internet browser that automatically replaces “Commanders” with “Redskins” on every screen. I find that sort of thing a little childish (not too different from the people who loudly trumpet that they will ONLY call them by the old name even though it’s gone), personally, but if it makes people happy, whatever. I mostly call them “Washington” because Commanders is absolutely embarrassing. So I kind of get it as a coping mechanism, although I’m not wired that way at all. And I acknowledge that those people have money that ownership wants, and won’t get by selling them Commanders gear.

But any thought that the old brand would actually return in any way (name or logo) feels delusional to me. A daydream for the people it comforts. I think it’s a nice compromise that the new ownership is working towards not treating the old branding as taboo anymore. But it won’t be back.

This is plenty fair, and to each their own. We all know it’s highly unlikely if at all for the old brand to come back, and it’s fine if you want to believe it’s impossible and not worth mentioning. That’s what comforts you I suppose. But you do seem to acknowledge that the current brand sucks, so I ask… Does that matter? Does it make us less popular to fans in general? Does it affect our ability to attract free agents? Does it matter that it keeps the taint of Snyder still alive? My answer to these is not really when we’re winning, but when times are tough it sure feels that way. A change to Redwolves, or whatever other name can be shown to be the least unpopular was and still is the right move in my opinion. Perhaps it’s too late for that, but what we have now to me is making it that much more difficult for us to claw our way out of laughing stock franchise status. I do realize that consistent winning is the deodorant that would render it all pretty meaningless, so hopefully we can get there someday. That’s something I think we can all agree on.
