(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

No idea. But it’s been verified that it was for sale in the team store at the stadium. If anyone is complaining about it, I haven’t heard it. But I don’t really do social media so maybe there is significant blowback I’m not seeing.

Like several other things they’ve done, this seems like a test to see what they can get away with. Corporate sponsors change their stance on things all the time the minute they sense a change in revenue projections or an easing of public scrutiny.

Couple of reasons why I asked-

-Nothing shows as available on the team’s online store
-Nothing on Nike.com
-Nothing on Fanatics

I’m just wondering who is producing Redskins gear.

Hmmm. One small step at a time I guess. Maybe they wanted to test it out at the stadium store only first before they take the bigger step of putting them online. We shall see…

Not quite the same thing, but I have always been amused that the Wizards continue to sell Washington Bullets gear at the arena and on their website store.

The late Abe Pollin, after owning a team called the Bullets for 31 years, woke up one morning and decided the name was unacceptable. Well ... ok. But if that is the case, if it is so egregious, then why do you continue sell stuff with that very name?

I appreciate Harris & Co's moves back towards tradition. But it also reminds me of those scenes in Goodfellas where rather than vocalize orders, everybody grins and nods their heads.

Maybe we should be the Washington Wink & Nods. Fits into the whole nations capital/political swamp milieu.

This outfit has some good stuff:

www.teepublic.com

I have not ordered any Redskins gear, yet. Rather I ordered one of my college shirts with block letters, a design my dear alma mater has abandoned.

And a Washington Bullets t-shirt!

I've ordered plenty from teepublic, including some JD and Scary Terry shirts. That website has never disappointed!

Here is a local report from wusa9 explaining the new gear with the Washington Redskins name. Basically, they are protecting the trademark, and they are only using the name for players who played under the old banner.

We will see if the organization having one foot in the old and one in the new can work over the long run.

Now PFT has gotten hold of the story. He points out that trademarks don't need to be brought back in order to 'protect' them.

What does that mean? They can't bring back the old logo without the name too...and the name is clearly interpreted as racist and the whole boycott thing will start all over again.

Time for the Redwolves!

Yeah, I dont think thats true. From what I've seen, you have to file a " statement of use " every ten years.

Mike Florio may be a worse attorney than he is a football analyst. To maintain a trademark it does need to be used in commerce. Failure to do so creates a presumption of abandonment. Someone will make money off of it. Either the team or whoever gets it if they could prove abandonment.

(There are few people I would enjoy more getting five minutes in a cage with in 4 oz gloves than that douchebag Florio.)

He even says " without researching ... "

I've noticed Florio, who was one of the biggest proponents of changing the name when we had it, has now shifted to trolling fans with the possibility of it coming back.

The team still owns the trademark for the logo and the name, together and individually.

He just likes clicks. Adores em. Needs em to keep his NBC deal or whatever. He is sometimes correct but always disingenuous in his intentions. One of our most prolific click-whores

The definition of use in commerce ( TMEP §901.01) was amended by the Trademark Law Revision Act of 1988 (TLRA), Public Law 100-667, 102 Stat. 3935, to add the phrase "the bona fide use of a mark in the ordinary course of trade, and not made merely to reserve a right in a mark." The primary purpose of the amendment was to eliminate the practice of "token use," or use made solely to reserve rights in a mark. The legislative history of the TLRA makes it clear that the meaning of "use in the ordinary course of trade" will vary from one industry to another.

It will be interesting to see if the sale of these t-shirts will ultimately qualify, or will they have to do more.

Protecting the trademark. Sure. Of course that’s what they’re going to say, whether they have a long-term plan to possibly bring it back or not. Especially when being asked by local media that seems hostile to the idea.
Trademark issue or not… if the name is really racist, then the team is also racist for selling these products. Not that I believe that, just saying you can’t have it both ways.

Yep, that is an issue that is already coming up.

At the end of the day, the team (and the NFL) chose to not be the Washington Redskins full-time anymore…but that was never an acknowledgment or agreement that the brand was “racist.” They never said any such thing. They just decided to retire the brand because it was a distraction and was racial and controversial but not necessarily “racist”.

Yeah, clearly the team doesn’t think so. The real question though is how many people out there actually do. And how many is enough to make it a distraction. In the year 2020 (worst year ever) it was enough, but I wonder what the answers will be in 2030. Seems to me like the team is also curious, at least enough so to dip their toes in the water here. Meanwhile, the Braves and Chiefs continue to thrive.

Not without occasional controversy.

I haven't heard anything about it over the last few years, and I think most people would say the same.
Maybe there's the occassional statements, but they're mostly just blips and they just keep moving along.

Well this was inevitable: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...ders-nickname-and-logo-meets-quick-resistance

But Florio undermines his argument a bit: "The trademarks argument seems flimsy. Even if the law requires the Commanders to use mothballed names and logos in order to preserve the rights to them, it doesn’t have to be quite so conspicuous. Besides, it felt like a “by the way” addition to the primary argument that they want merchandise honoring alumni that is authentic and accurate."
