(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

My understanding is that the sponsors verbalized no objection to use of the logo in the context of a 'throwback' uniform or to sell merchandise, which sounds quite a bit different from the 'logo coming back'. And these were sponsors, not top NFL brass who may be quite dug in on simply not wanting any Native American imagery. And yes I know about the Chiefs, lol... but they may view an arrowhead logo quite differently from a depiction of an actual Native American. The biggest barrier to them keeping the Native American logo in the first place vs. doing a full 'rebrand' is it makes no sense with the new name which is a monumental hurdle.

If I had to guess they may find a way to use the logo but it will never be 'the logo' again.
I said I think there’s a path.

Get it on the alternate uniform and on merch.

See that literally nobody cares and it’s fairly widely embraced. (Except maybe some of the absolute worst of the media heads)

Slowly expand it and voila, it becomes the logo again.

Would that happen? I dunno.

But that’s the path.

There isn’t a path I can see currently for the name.

But see a path for the logo, Even if it unlikely.

I wonder, if during the sale, they said "you're the Commanders." Going through another rebrand and name change would be disastrous--simply because it will stir up the hornets nest of Name Nuts, and end up right back where we are now: with a bunch of people complaining still, no matter what they end up with.

I don't think there is a fan alive that would prefer Commanders over Redskins, in a vacuum. But like several have said, the name debate was utterly exhausting. I was a fervent defender of "Redskins," and not to relitigate the whole debate, but it was never as black and white as a lot of people wanted it to be. If Snyder never owned the team, we still be the Redskins. But all we have now is acceptance in my humble, yet expert, opinion.

To Voice_of_Reason point: they could absolutely be slow playing the logo back into the works, and they're doing it the right way--starting with Native backing from the Wentzel family. It's entirely possible, the probability of the logo being used again is up to debate. Nike and the NFL refused to sell it anymore. Adding the logo back in though will stir up the lunatic fringe of not only the Name Nuts but the perpetually offended.

Does anyone here really want to hear from Mike Wise and Susan Harjo again?

They definitely need to bring back the logo slowly but surely!! Every home game I watched, I saw tons of Redskins gear still being worn throughout the stands!! I've already the accepted the name not coming back.

I think it's entirely possible that the NFL stepped in and told Harris and co. that they wouldn't sign off on another name change, because I personally believe the NFL was behind the original name change as part of the foundation of the eventual ousting of Snyder. That they wanted to wash out any resemblance of the Redskins because they knew it would be easier to detach Snyder from a team he didnt recognize, then convince him to sell because it wasn't the same team he rooted for as a child.

The Logo was never the root of the drama, and if my theory above is true, the NFL would have no issue backing it if it worked it's way back in to some level of regular rotation. That being said, the logo doesn't exactly scream 'Commander' so on some level there will be a reach if we're thinking it will be the full time representation. I 1000% could see it being a throwback / alternative option though, and it should be.

We should bring back tar and feathering just for Mike Wise.
There's a number of people we can add to that list: Florio, Wilbon, JLC, Reid, Keith Olbermann. I'm not even talking about the dinguses (dingi?) on the radio--just focusing on the abject haters.

I am not sure though there was a bigger grandstanding jackass on the issue than Wise.

I truly wish I did not know who either of those people were.
Mike Wise is one of my most despised media members of all time.

Years ago, I think Kerrigan’s rookie season, th team did a charity bike ride in Reston. The reason I remember it was Kerrigan’s rookie season is I biked with him a bit down the trail.

Mike Wise was one of the honorary grand poobahs. I ended up passing him at some point and it took all the self control I had not to “slip” and run him off the trail and down an embankment. I didn’t even flick him off but I thought nasty thoughts about him as I passed him.

Kendrick Goldston was also on the ride. That was a big man and I felt bad for the bike.

Chris Russell was the master of ceremonies. And joked that’s all he could do because he was too fat to actually ride. Amazingly, he was pretty good in that role.

It’s a pity that event ended. It was a lot of fun.

Wise was worse than all of them combined. And not just about the name. Just literally everything. But he worked for the post so he had a loud microphone

People are shocked when I say I didn’t shed a tear when the post essentially collapsed earlier this year. It hasn’t been the landmark newspaper in decades. It died long ago. I wasn’t sad to see the whole thing go up in flames.

The sad part about Mike Wise is that he is one of the few DC sportswriters who was actually a gifted writer. If his stuff wasn't always so damned 'agenda driven' he could be a great sportswriter.

Oh, I think there were a bunch who were gifted writers. Clearly Kornheiser and Wilbon, Sally Jenkins, Dan Steinburg (before he went entirely sports bog mode), Boswell…

All of those folks were in overlapping eras. All gifted writers.

The problem with Wise is he thought he was absolutely the smartest guy in the room and anybody who disagreed with him was an uneducated dumbass.

He was a gifted writer, but I wouldn’t put him in the top tier of Washington Post sports writers. Maybe one slot below.

I certainly do not object, but I am nonetheless confused.

For years I was told the name and logo were akin all kinds of vile things: Rebel flags, Minstrel shows, cross-burnings, SS regalia (hey Graham Platner). and golliwogs. Then in a fit of nationwide hysteria, the NFL suddenly agrees and out it all goes.

Never mind that Atlanta, Chicago, and Kansas City shrugged their collective shoulders and said it had nothing to do with them.

But now we will be able to bring that same logo out occasionally and that will be acceptable?

I'm sorry, but I simply do not "get" the 21st century.

Because it was never about the name and logo… it was about ousting Snyder

Can't say I agree.

The name controversy predates Snyder. Colleges (Stanford, Miami of Ohio, St Johns, North Dakota) had already ditched the Native American themes. It was embryonic, but it was there.

Granted, having an Art Rooney type owner might have defused some tension and bought time, but they were coming for us.

If it wasn't about the name and logo, we should be able to reinstate it with ease.

The controversy existed before Snyder.

Snyder made it much easier.

And wildly enough it was never a controversy to the NFL until the months preceding his ousting. The league had vehemently, and vocally, defended the Name / Logo until suddenly they disappeared. Nike was the lynchpin all of a sudden despite having the contract with the NFL for years prior to the ultimatum. It's my opinion that the NFL realized the best way to get Snyder to ultimately sell, is to wash out the team he love, and Wright and co. was any easy plant to support and spearhead (there's a pun here somewhere) that movement to finally get Snyder to let go.

(Nevermind on the Fred Smith part I was wrong on that)

I’ve come to realize the single biggest reason why things are much quieter now is because none of the major partners or retailers have agreed to stop working with or selling the gear of other Native themed teams. If Nike decides to stop selling Chiefs gear, and Coke or Pepsi can’t be bought in Arrowhead watch how quickly it gets changed.

Bottom line, they are just not seen the same as we were. Yes, I think that’s bullshit, but it’s the way it is regardless.
