(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

I did see that and it made me like them more. They're John Riggins in my profile and not 2019 Adrian Peterson
Someone mentioned earlier how care and attention went into this, and I’m positive that having these ‘new’ uniforms be a throwback to pre-Snyder Redskins is absolutely a deliberate choice. It’s a subtle way of saying the cut off here is the ‘91 team, let’s forget those pesky Snyder years lol

I used to be friends with a few of them, and they were getting very long in the tooth 20 years ago. I am sure some of them have left us. :(

Well it's time for us upper-middle-aged, overweight dads to take up the mantle!

It was more than just the uniform for the Commanders

Wednesday, Sheehan, hosting his Team 980 radio morning show, correctly described the issue of branding that the Harris group understands. "This is what they could do, and they did it well, from my standpoint. I love this. Watching my team in this uniform will make me think that it's the team I've rooted for my entire life."

"People laugh at things like that. This is what's called 'branding attachment.' We were emotionally detached from the brand on February 2, 2022. And even before that, with the loss of the name in the summer of 2020."

"That is, by the way, a real thing, and (team president) Mark Clouse knows this.

100%. This is what you finally have competent professionals in an organization.

Yes, we had a miserable almost 25 years due to the WOSH. However, I can't imagine fans of "lovable losers" like the Cubs were for so long would be happy with almost expansion level team rebrand if they had for some reason been forced to change their name. The Guardians didn't lean into getting rid of Indians traditional colors or uniforms. Yet for some reason the Commanders though it was a good idea with a vocal minority on social media cheering it on because they associate the old uniforms "with losing." My and many others attachment this team isn't the win loss records, but the memories with friends and family we love. If it was strictly about wins and losses, we would be band-wagoning other teams or jumping to the Ravens like some have done.

I don't think the Snyder Commanders uniforms had anything to do with an attempt to reject the past. They were just bad uniforms, and I think having said 'We will NEVER change the name!' and then having to do just that, it left Snyder and Company powerless and deflated. Even Dan Snyder knew in that moment that he would forever be known as the owner who lost the franchise name. They brought in an inexperienced Jason Wright who was, sorry, clearly in over his head, gave Ron Rivera who again had little appreciation for this team's legacy and empowered him to the max, and allowed the Owner's wife to take over as pseudo-owner, and worse, make decisions she had no business or qualifications to make, and what you got was a disaster of a new brand. But I don't think there was ever any intent to 'move away' from all things Redskins. If there had been, they would've blown it all up, moved away from the colors, the fight song, etc... They clearly were *trying* to maintain some ties to who the team had been, they just had no freaking idea how to pull it off, and by that point I don't think the owner gave one's rat's ass what they came up with. It was just another high quality Dan Snyder-lead production.

Maybe now is a good time to shift the conversation a bit. Assuming the alternates this year become the home uniforms next year…What would you guys do for a new alternate and new away?

I think we use the exact same jersey style for the away…just make it the traditional burgundy. Keep the alternate the black Uni (because a lot of people do genuinely like it) but maybe incorporate the older style elements as well. Change the letters on the black jersey to be burgundy with gold outline instead of what it is currently. Maybe put an arrow on the sleeves. Move away from the helmets with the numbers on them and put the W on the black one as well. Wear the burgundy pants with the black jersey.

They need to put that on some stuff I can buy immediately. Pins, shirts, hats, flags, posters, patches, drink ware , lamps, bed spreads, dog bandannas, toilet lids

Everything

My wife is going to be so mad at me.

The Super Bowl era unis, complete with the old font on the name plate, and the script R in “Raise Hail” are giving me a big Redskins nostalgia kick. I’m stoked!

I totally understand fans like tomwvr who are still bitter, especially about the most egregious stuff like hiding the beautiful old logo, and I do think some Redskins fans are gone forever, but for me it means a lot that they are listening to fans and embracing our history, and it gives me hope for more of the same. As long as I’m being optimistic, maybe they can fix the fight song too.

Anyway count me among the fans who will be buying merch for the first time since the rebrand.

Someone also pointed out on Twitter, it may have been Chris Russell (forgive me for giving him props for making a good point) that it likely is 100% intentional that the throwbacks do not have the word “Commanders” anywhere on them. They very well may have done that to get merchandising opportunities out there for those fans that simply refuse to buy anything that says ‘Commanders’.

In addition to that point, it truly is a throwback, and we weren’t the Commanders when we wore those uniforms. They can’t put Redskins on it and it would have been somewhat in poor taste to put our current name, so they left it blank in recognition that there clearly is a difference between the two.

I'd love to see the Lombardi-era uniform (in some fashion) incorporated as a throwback. That dark yellow helmet with one burgundy stripe, with the new W on it - alone, with a feather, in a circle, in a circle with a feather...basically anything - would look fantastic! Only Green Bay does the yellow lids, and and I think we would look great in them.

I hope they troll the name changing activists and roll out a different alternate every year based on a different Redskins team era.

Hell, put the Joe Gibbs script ‘R’ on the helmet in some fashion out of spite.

I also think it’s completely fine to bring back a throwback with the Chief Two Guns logo. The logo was never the problem, it was the name. I understand not using that logo full time because it doesn’t make sense with Commanders, per se’, but I don’t think it’s far fetched to use it as a throwback alternate. We may be under a different name, but we still represent the 3 Super Bowl trophies, we have retired numbers based on accomplishments of that other name, and we are honoring the past with videos like we saw with Darrell Green, Doug Williams and others. Why would it be ‘far fetched’ to see a throwback option with the Indian Head?

Those uniforms hit, and I really felt something when I saw those images. That kind of nostalgia is strong, we really had an identity during that era. Hate the W on the helmet and hope it's eventually phased out. For now, though, I'll take what I can get, especially if these incremental changes all seem to be on a positive direction. Hats off to the HOG. They really do get it.

Put that on a t-shirt right now. The script R was my favorite of the old design!

Careful, I’ve been called delusional on this thread for suggesting the old logo could someday be used on a throwback. And the fact that they’re not taking this opportunity to do it is admittedly another nail in the coffin for it. But until Josh Harris actually comes out and says it like he eventually did with keeping the C name, there’s always a chance. As it stands, there is evidence that they’ve left the door slightly cracked open. We’ve seen them testing the waters by using the logo at the stadium and in their marketing—basically making sure the logo doesn’t get erased completely or deemed as offensive. Again, I realize it’s at best a longshot (and even more so now) but it’s a bit unfair to say it’s a delusional opinion. I guess it bothers people that some fans want to keep hope alive and if so they should be calling for Josh Harris to put a stop to the speculation, which he could easily do, but at this point has chosen not to. If/when he does, that’s when I’ll give up on it.

I’d like to remind everybody that it was far from over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor!

why all the promos with the roman shit and the spears?? are they intentionally toying with the fans? they had to know what rumors those images were going to conjure up.
