(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

There is another category: the people who staunchly refuse to accept the name is growing and because they don't like it. Scrolling through the comments there is a lot of "How much did Harris pay for this!?" or "out of how many people?!" or other dismissive, plug-their-ears-and-go-la-la-la-la-la behavior. It's very interesting.
I believe the post also had an interesting poll regarding the name back in 2016, where a lot of people on the other side of the argument tended to ignore the results that they didn’t like! But again, I’m not one of the ones still fighting for the old name. Never really was, it’s just Snyder for me. I just don’t want him to be the one to give us our permanent new name. If that’s petty of me, so be it. Never said my hated of Snyder was rational.

There is no irrational hate for Snyder--it's all justified. What he did to this once amazing, passionate, loud fanbase should be a case study. Netflix needs to do a documentary--Adam Scott should play Snyder.

I'll never understand the affinity for WFT--a blander, more boring name and logo, that screams Snyder's incompetence even more. He was so arrogantly inept, he couldn't see the writing on the wall and have something prepared.

I blame Boone for my coming to grips with the new name. Before he asked me to help out with the Bluesky account I never said or typed the word Commanders. I always said Washington, 'skins, or Redskins, but because of Boone I've had to type Commanders so often that I've become desensitized. I still think that there was nothing truly wrong with Redskins and that it wasn't "offensive." I base the latter on the studies, reports, and interviews of Native Americans. Still, I've moved into a neutral place in regards to the name.

Mind you, I never hated it. I just thought it was super blah. Super boring. And pretty damn stupid. The Commanders don't take to the field. The infantry do! The Marines do. The calvary does! The Commanders are sitting on the hill issuing orders. Sure, we can root for General Eisenhauer, but he's the coach not the team.

I was in the tank for Redwolves, but whatever. I saw someone post on X that once Snyder lost Warriors, he rage-quit the process (entirely probable), and it was left to that vapid twit Tanya, and the empty suit Wright--with input from Rivera, I am sure.

Redskins wasn't offensive--Snyder made it so. If he never owned the team, we would still be the Redskins. It was also such a one-sided issue in the media--I saw pusillanimous douchebag Mike Wise blocking Natives who liked the name on X, saying, they weren't real natives. A white man determining who is and isn't native. Any contrary opinion was shouted down--and then Fred Smith saw an opportunity to get Snyder out and we have what we have now. I don't even blame Smith. I give him credit for trying to save us all from that spawn of Satan.

Fuck I hate the offseason.

I see Fred Smith as just another billionaire battling with Snyder over every dollar. He didn’t need to damage the brand like that to get what he wanted, but he did anyway. And the collateral damage was all of us lost something. He didn’t save us from Snyder, he was partners with Snyder. And Snyder screwed it up for both of them. Smith at that point, just wanted out of the disaster, and was willing to do whatever it took. If Smith was going to save us from Snyder he should’ve done it 20 years earlier!

Ultimately, though, this was the beginning of the end for Snyder. After buying out his partners, for pennies on the dollar, there was no one reputable willing to work with him. He had to take on that huge loan, couldn't afford a new stadium, was drowning in debt--and then the scandals started coming out--which was the nail in the coffin.

I certainly would rather win with Harris and Commanders, than lose with Snyder and Redskins.

Smith on his own was never going to be able to force Snyder out. Snyder's staff keeping inappropriate pictures of its cheerleaders wasn't enough. It took Snyder trying to pocket more NFL money than he was allowed. Even Congress investigating him seemed to do only mild damage to Snyder. It took a storm of Congress, Smith, and the NFL owners finally refusing to back him that forced him out. Trying to pin everything wrong about the team on a minority owner not doing enough to stop the Goliath team owner 20 years before Snyder's transgressions became public is misguided.

I know the name is only a few years old, but I'm willing to bet we have the lowest " like " rating " and highest " dislike " rating by our fans and their name of any team in the NFL and it will stay that way for a long time.
I don't know. I think if you caught the Packers in a moment of humble honesty they'd be like... "Dude! What the hell? The Packers?"

That and the banks coming at him for loans about to come due that he wasn't liquid enough to pay.

Haha yes ‘packer’ sounds like a funny name by today’s vernacular. But Packer fans realize that this name is ~100 years old, and it was originally an ode to the workers in the meatpacking industry that thrived in that area. So it has a connection to the community where the team is from. It also has a cool nickname “the Pack“ and a long history and tradition of winning behind it. I can’t speak for Packer fans, but I’m guessing they like the name for the most part.

I’d say it’s a big exaggeration for you to say anyone’s trying to pin everything wrong about the team on him. Everything? Not at all, just pointing out that he’s not without blame for the long nightmare. He spent 25 years profiting off of our misery alongside Snyder. If his actions in the end helped lead to the end of Snyder, that’s awesome. I put him in the same category as Jim Irsay… I thank them for their contribution to the end of Snyder, but otherwise, I just don’t really care for them. Guess I’m way in the minority on this, and that’s ok. We’re beating a dead horse anyway.

They might say that, but if you asked them if they wanted to change it, I'd bet it would be a resounding " No ".

As far as the poll, you mentioned the " hate " rating ( but since I dont sign up for the Post ), could you post the total of " hate " and " dislike " numbers, compared to last years poll ?

Interesting thing about that poll it shows a 16% increase in fandom, and also a 16% increase in people liking the name. If I have that right, it would seem to indicate the increase in popularity of the name is not apparent among longtime fans, and only a product of new fans coming in. Definitely possible though that some of the longtime fans have moved from the “hate” category to the “dislike“ category, so I’d also be interested in knowing what the change was year to year in the hate the name category if someone has it.

Here are the facts:
-Dan Snyder was so confident the name Redskins was going to remain that he let go of the Washington Warriors TM years before the Golden State Warriors won 3 out of 4 championships.
-Loss of money via sponsorships was the final straw that cause the name to retire. And no matter what, the Redskins name is not coming back because the sponsors can do the same trick again.
-Commanders was one of three name finalists and the only name that Washington can claim 100% of the trademark. Redwolves was owned by Arkansas State Univ. (Wolves was owned by Minnesota Timberwolves), and DCFC was owned by Detroit City Football Club. No organization wants to lease a name. They want full control. Especially a pro league team.

I don't want to hear people say that any name other than Commanders will garners more sales. There is no guarantee. The only guarantee are Commanders sales already are making sales. So no reason to fix what is making money.
If the Redskins name was the price we had to pay to get rid of Dan Snyder, so be it. Outside of Red(wolves), none of the other names were exciting. Armada, Brigade, Presidents, WFT, Redhogs (TM owned by U of AR), and Defenders (XFL was active).

So yeah I don't like the name. And I won't repeat what I said in previous posts here:

The primary purpose for this organization is to win.
But its secondary purpose is to create an identity. And the W and crest is not an identity. We need a visual identity we have been missing since 2019. It can be just as simple as putting the W inside a shape. And that shape is a soldier dog tag. Other teams use simple shapes that trigger images. Cowboys have the star, Chiefs have the arrowhead, so why not let us use the soldier dog tag (a literal form of identity)?
I get angry at people who hate the name and they don't even try to make it work. If they think that is the organization's job, no. We the fans need to make the Commanders name work. We the fans need to take the crap they gave us and turn it into a visual identity that we can get behind without saying the name sucks. They may still have questions about how things connect, but when we show off our W inside a soldier dogtag, and the many images that come to mind, nothing else will matter.
Remember who we were, Take Command of who we are.

I also got a couple of new designs to show off on my teepublic store

FYI, I also ordered a new supply of #ExpandtheBrand merch I give away at Commanders events. It’s about the message, not the money.
I got
500 vinyl stickers
500 dog tags
100 holographic stickers
100 magnets

If you want to support making Commanders work and bringing in a visual identity, I will be in main Commanders events this summer like training camp and preseason games and four home games.

This is just false.

Of course not any name, but any name they would have possibily chosen ?

Yeah, I think it garners as many if not more sales.

How exactly is that going to work ?
You gonna put a " C " on the side of the helmet ? ( Probably not ).
You gonna put a depiction of an American " Commander " on the side of the helmet ?
What is that going to look like ?
( An American " Commander " all decked out in his burgandy and gold ? )
A dog on the side of the helmet ?

"" Commanders " is limiting.

It is true. Commanders, Redwolves and DCFC were the final 3. Commanders was free for the taking when it came to Trademark unlike the other two.

So if all the possible names out there would have made just as must money as Commanders, then no reason to change the name again, especially if changing the name means having to pay the original TM owner of the new name.

And clearly you didn't ready my linked posts. We don't need to go overboard with brand expansion. It can be as simple as adding a soldier dog tag. That strikes an image in people's minds when they see it IRL.
The dog tag is the primary campaign. The German Shepherd K9 stuff is more of extra expansion I am putting out. I figured since we bring in the dog tag, why not the very dog used in K9 units in police, govt, and military (all use the role Commander)/
