Man, it feels good to be in a new era.
So far this ownership group is saying and doing all the right things. I watched as much of the footage from the introductory conference/pep-rally things, and the thing that struck me the most (other than I spent the whole time smiling!) is taht I really couldn't fault it. Now maybe I was just on a buzz because Dan's gone, but when was the last time the team pulled off an event without shooting themselves in the foot somehow?
How different in vibe was this to when they unveiled the branding a year or so ago? That felt so low key and amateurish, while this just felt exciting and slick.
The absolutely weirdest thing to see was Josh Harris high fiving with the crowd. Weird but good. Could you EVER see Dan doing that? (I mean in the latter days he'd have been dragged into the crowd and beaten to a pulp, but even in the early days he's never been a 'man of the people' kind of owner.)
It was a masterstroke to sign the rookies on the very first day, and to unveil the new railings. Simple things, but it sends a message. They're getting things done.
I totally expect them to spend a crapload of cash upgrading Fedex for the short term as well.
They also have been VERY careful to bring the old alumni onside and to talk a lot about tradition and how this team used to be a powerhouse. Makes me feel comfortable about our identity moving forward. We may never be the Redskins in name again, but I feel like we'll always be the Burgundy and Gold. That matters to this fan base.
New Era. Different Era!
I get the definite vibe that a name change is coming. They've not overtly said it, but they certainly are leaving the door wedged wide open for it.
I get the impression that we may be about to go through the whole 'fan engagement' thing again about names etc, but where as the previous one really just felt like lip-service (and landing on the name Commanders felt so contrived!) I feel like this one may be genuine. Be interesting to see how they do it. I know Redskins isn't coming back, but damn they can do better than Commanders and this pitiful W logo.
Anyway, to cut a long story short...
I haven't been this excited for a season in a long time! At this point I'm not even sure I care too much about how our team pans out this season, because this feels like a new beginning. The start of a new path.
