What are the odds that Washington's NFL Football Team will change its name some day?

As an AI, I don't predict odds. However, I can tell you that it's not unprecedented for a sports team to change its name because of controversy and public pressure. Indeed, the Washington NFL Team announced in 2020 that it would change its name from "Redskins" due to its offensive connotations towards Native Americans. The team is temporarily known as the "Washington Football Team" until a new name is decided.

Factors such as societal norms, political pressure, owner's views, fans' acceptance, and even legal issues may influence a team's decision to change its name. However, due to the financial implications of rebranding, a professional sports team usually doesn't change its name frequently.

For any potential future changes, keep an eye on announcements from the team or the NFL, as they will be the definitive sources.

Chat GPT is usually a year or two behind when it comes to data availability. It’s one of the limitations.

Okay.

I just asked my generic AI, and this is what it said:

The odds of the Washington Commanders changing their name again have been a topic of discussion recently. According to the latest betting odds, there is a strong possibility of a name change. The odds for a name change are currently favored at -300, meaning it's considered likely2.

There have been rumors and discussions about potentially reverting to the old name "Redskins" or choosing a new name altogether. The new ownership group, led by Josh Harris, has hinted at the possibility of a name change, which has fueled speculation2.

If you're interested in following this topic, it might be worth keeping an eye on the latest news and updates from the team and the NFL.

Here is a footnote link.

Pretty sure he knows about that thread RedWolf , but I think Mark was curious what our AI guru would have to say.

If i had one dollar left to bet for my whole life, it would not be on the name changing again, especially after this season.

Yeah, if they had won 5-6 it would be a different story. Now? I don’t believe they will. All the buttercups (like myself) will most likely have to suck it up.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but it really just depends on one thing. Do the owners hate the name? If they do, and view it as the bulk of the fanbase as something Snyder saddled us with that will carry his stink on it forever, I think they will change it. Does our winning this season make you guys love the name or even like it more? Doesn't have that effect on me. I hate it and I wanted it changed. I think the 'if we win, they'll keep the name' argument is overblown.

If they don't hate the name (or don't hate it enough to go through the bother of doing something about it), they'll continue to delay until fans are resigned to it.

That's the big unknown. We've Josh Harris say that he knows the name is a big issue for fans. What we haven't heard him say is how he and the other owners feel about it. In fact, I don't know that I've ever even heard him asked that question.

I think Harris truly loves this franchise unlike the previous owner. However, ultimately I think the name issue comes down to the bottom line. If it is financially better to change the name, he will do it. If not it stays. The more we win, the more merch that is purchased the less likely this become. There are just not enough glory days new name haters like me to offset the Millennial and younger fans that only know misery under the Redskins. And "old farts" like myself don't help when we purchase new merch. I haven't purchased any Comms merch (for myself), but when one of my kids is clamoring for a JD5 jersey and the other a Terry jersey for their birthdays which fall during a playoff run, what can I do? I make the purchase because they are the 4th Gen....

Valid point Chuck, one others have made - that the business model of the new franchise is going to be focused on the younger and potential future fans. But in terms of a 'business' decision, they will also look hard at what the true marketing potential for 'Commanders' is vs. something more dynamic and identifiable. Yes - folks will buy gear because they have no choice, it's Commanders gear or no gear. Were the name something more likeable and promoteable, it could have a major positive impact on swag sales. I'm sure they have or are looking at all of those things.

Obviously they didn't look at potential sales by changing the name to something more marketable. So I guess they don't mind people like me only ever wearing Redskins stuff to games.

I don't mind. I have lots of other things to spend cash on.
