I'm also big into Overkill, Testament, and Accept. Three bands that have released some of the best metal of their careers over the last decade or so. There is still great classic metal being made, but these guys are getting older. I'm going to enjoy it as long as I can.

Almost 30 years ago i fell in love with this voice while I was stationed in Japan and today i listented to her again and I can't stop listetening to all of her songs. Just like before.

Trying to figure out what people define as Metal vs. Hard Rock because it has evolved over 50 years. I think the first metal bands were Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Then we had the late'70s bands and '80s bands like Deep Purple Judas Priest Metallica Ozzy VanHalen Scorpions AC/DC etc...from there it evolved.

To me? Hendrix broke it all open running 3x Marshall 100W 1959 Super Lead Plexis with 3x full cabinets (8x 12in speakers each). I have one, and the volume that a single 59SLP stack puts out is absolutely insane. My body feels like jelly from the sound waves after 2 hours. I also think that The Who was the first punk band.

All those bands have been labeled metal at some point in their careers. Young people today would not call that metal with the exception of Judas Priest I believe, but not sure. Metal is such a broad category these days. Basically anything with heavy guitars is considered metal. I don’t always agree with that, but they are.

I think metal is a state of mind as well as the heavy guitars. Bands are definitely heavier these days musically. I’ve only found a handful of metal these past ten years that I really like. Most sound the same to me. A larger band comes along like Periphery and the next thing you know everyone is trying to imitate them. There’s not a ton of originality out there right now.

I’m really looking forward to finding bands that make me feel the way Opeth and Mastodon made me feel when I first heard them. But, I’m not sure that’s going to happen.



Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull played flute and spoken word on about 6 songs of the new Opeth album.
