Mock Drafts Thread

I love the idea of trading back but if Quinn is still on the board at ten we might just take him. Orakpo on one side Quinn on the other for years to come has a nice feel to it.

However I would be fine with trading down even twice and landing with four picks in the first three rounds. With the first pick we take either the best 3-4 defensive end still on the board or OLB. In the 2nd round I would love to land Torrey Smith with one second round. Colin Kaepernick with another 2nd round and finally solid interior lineman with our third round pick.

So that means we have a first round talent to help our defense. A good WR to stretch the opposing defense plus a lot of upside. Speaking upside we got a QB that has as much upside as any other in the draft. Plus an interior lineman that will help our O-line.

Fifth round and later we get another big guy for the D-line or maybe two, another RB and plenty more.

how would you like to be in the Panther's spot? Cam Newton: he's a great athlete but a huge question mark...paying him some plus up on Bradford's contract is gonna cause someone to choke hard. I'd think long and hard on that one.

Quinn scares me - one good year of sacks against crappy competition (the good teams shut him down), smells like a Mike Mamula to me...

I know where you're coming from....but what if he is head and tails above the other candidates on the board when pick #10 arrives? I'd prefer a d-line pick, but if Jones really is a game changer......I could easily live with such a pick.

Heard an assessment today that Quinn doesn't have much when it comes to the run game. Based on 09 film.....but nevertheless a warning sign.

Just posted about Quinn - he scares me a lot. Boom or bust type of player - I could see him busting big time.

If Julio truly is a game-changing type player like Andre or Calvin, then yeah, I'd have no problem taking him at 10th overall. But then I think about the Lions, who took 4 game-changers in the top 10 overall for 3 years in a row, and just look how far back that set them. They are just now recovering, and Mike Williams was selected in 2005. Granted, that was three years in a row, however...

point taken. gets down to what Boone says in the QB thread -> make tee right choice!

I'm with you on Quinn. More fundamentally.....I don't have a friggin clue! I watch NFL today, listen to NFL radio, listen to Skins Nation, read a bit....but I don't know what the team is looking for....I don't follow these college teams....what the H do I know?!!!! What I can do is look at decisions after the fact and decide whether they are good or not.

Vis Julio: I'd really love to have a game changer who is a threat to score whenever on the field. On the other hand, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the team needs to build from the bottom up (the lines) and solidify the foundation - i.e., having a Julio Jones would be wonderful, but without the foundation how far can you get?

Shutdown Corner's Latest Mock:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...rner-Mock-Countdown-Version-1-?urn=nfl-wp1201

1. Carolina Panthers — A.J. Green, WR, Georgia

2. Denver Broncos —Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

3. Buffalo Bills —Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

4. Cincinnati Bengals — Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

5. Arizona Cardinals — Von Miller, OLB, Texas A & M

6. Cleveland Browns — Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

7. San Francisco 49ers —Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina

8. Tennessee Titans — Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

9. Dallas Cowboys — Tyron Smith, OT, USC
If there are two things we know about the 2011 Dallas Cowboys, they're these: First, the team needs help along the offensive line, especially at the tackle position. Second, Jerry Jones has no problem taking risks in athletic reach picks. That's what Smith would be, to a degree — he's 20 years old, played right tackle in college, and suited up at just 280 pounds — he's never played in the 27 pounds he's gained since then. But he's also the most athletic tackle in this class, and the upside is tremendous. Smith could start out on the right side for Marc Colombo(notes), and eventually swing over to be Dallas' first franchise left tackle since Flozell Adams(notes).

10. Washington Redskins — Jake Locker, QB, Washington
No player has bounced around big boards more than Locker in the last year and change. Thought to be a guaranteed top-3 pick had he come out in 2010, the pride of Ferndale, Wash. stayed another year with the Huskies, let talent evaluators see another season of game tape, and saw his stock drop as a result. But Mike Shanahan has been in love with the Elway-ish aspect of Locker's skill set for years, specifically his accuracy on the move — and it wouldn't be a surprise if Locker was picked here. Whether that would be best for Locker's career is another matter altogether.

11. Houston Texans — Prince Amukamara, DB, Nebraska

12. Minnesota Vikings — Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

13. Detroit Lions — Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

14. St. Louis Rams — Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

15. Miami Dolphins — Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida

16. Jacksonville Jaguars — Aldon Smith, OLB, Missouri

17. New England Patriots (from Oakland Raiders) —Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

18. San Diego Chargers — J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

19. New York Giants — Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
It wasn't so long ago that the Giants were led to a Super Bowl win by the best and most consistent offensive line in the game, but things change — people get older and more injury-prone, and that's what's going on with the G-men and their front five. Sherrod comes to the NFL as quite possibly the most NFL-ready tackle in this draft class, and the ability to kick over to the right side, as he did during Senior Bowl week. He's an agile blocker with an underrated nasty streak, and his strong technique should keep Tom Coughlin's blood pressure on the good side.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

21. Kansas City Chiefs — Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

22. Indianapolis Colts — Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

23. Philadelphia Eagles — Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
The Eagles have taken risks on players with character concerns before — Terrell Owens(notes) and Michael Vick(notes) come to mind — and the rumors surrounding Smith's prior off-field issues (which he has said are behind him) and possible overconfidence (which has not gone away — he was quoted at the combine as saying that he has better ball skills than Nnamdi Asomugha(notes)). In truth, Smith is a tall, rangy, dynamic man cornerback with a lot of potential — the only question is whether the light goes and stays on from a common sense perspective.

24. New Orleans Saints — Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia

25. Seattle Seahawks — Cameron Jordan, DE, California

26. Baltimore Ravens —Brandon Harris, CB, Miami

27. Atlanta Falcons — Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois

28. New England Patriots — Danny Watkins, OG, Baylor

29. Chicago Bears -- Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

30. New York Jets — Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

31. Pittsburgh Steelers — Corey Liuget, DL, Illinois

32. Green Bay Packers — Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple

Here is the latest mock from Walter Football. Update includes the Redskins picks in all rounds (at the bottom).

http://walterfootball.com/draft2011.php

Last update: Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Major updates in all 7 rounds.

This 2011 NFL Mock Draft order is based on the official 2011 NFL Draft Order.

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

2. Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M

4. Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia

5. Arizona Cardinals: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

6. Cleveland Browns: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina

7. San Francisco 49ers: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

8. Tennessee Titans: Jake Locker, QB, Washington

9. Dallas Cowboys: J.J. Watt, DE/DT, Wisconsin

10. Washington Redskins: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
The Redskins need a quarterback, but with Blaine Gabbert (and Jake Locker) off the board, there is no signal-caller worth taking at No. 10. And no, Washington won't trade up. Trades just don't happen in the top 10 unless Eric Mangini is involved. Plus, the Redskins don't have the ammunition to make that type of move.

If Gabbert is gone, the Redskins will take the best player available because they have holes throughout their roster. Julio Jones will be the pick if the 2011 NFL Draft unfolds this way. Jones had an incredible performance in Indianapolis, running a 4.39 and leaping an 11-foot-3 broad jump despite suffering through a fractured foot. He's drawn comparisons to Terrell Owens and Hines Ward. The occasional drop is an issue, but he's a terrific player otherwise.

Jones fills a huge need for the Redskins; with Santana Moss hitting free agency, their top receiver is currently Anthony Armstrong. Something must be done about this. Also, Jones' run-blocking really has to intrigue Mike Shanahan, who will probably have to make do with Ryan Torain again next year.

Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:

1. Robert Quinn, DE/OLB - If the Browns select Jones instead of Robert Quinn, the Redskins will pick the North Carolina pass-rusher.

2. J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan, DE/DT - The Redskins need a new 3-4 end to upgrade their awful defensive line.

Pick change; previously Robert Quinn, DE/OLB

11. Houston Texans: Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri

12. Minnesota Vikings: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

13. Detroit Lions: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

14. St. Louis Rams: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois

15. Miami Dolphins: Mike Pouncey, G, Florida

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

17. New England Patriots: Tyron Smith, OT, USC

18. San Diego Chargers: Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple

19. New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Cameron Jordan, DE, California

21. Kansas City Chiefs: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

22. Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

23. Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

24. New Orleans Saints: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

25. Seattle Seahawks: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina

26. Baltimore Ravens: Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio State

27. Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame

28. New England Patriots: Justin Houston, DE/OLB, Georgia

29. Chicago Bears: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State

30. New York Jets: Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Williams, CB/FS, Texas

32. Green Bay Packers: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona

Round 2

41. Washington Redskins: Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada
Mike Shanahan will draft a quarterback this April. There are rumors that he likes Jake Locker, but Shanahan is usually tight-lipped throughout the draft process. When he selected Jay Cutler, he had never even worked him out.

Colin Kaepernick has unlimited upside. He also possesses the mobility that Shanahan likes out of his quarterbacks.

Round 5

144. Washington Redskins: Josh Thomas, CB, Buffalo
Carlos Rogers and Phillip Buchanon are both free agents. Replacements are needed here if either one walks.

155. Washington Redskins: Bruce Miller, DE/OLB, Central Florida
Washington acquired this pick from the Saints in the Jammal Brown trade.

The Redskins had a great pass-rushing combination in 2009 with Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo and Albert Haynesworth dominating opposing fronts. Why they changed to a 3-4 is beyond me. Carter won't be back, so Washington will have to find a new rush linebacker.

Round 6

177. Washington Redskins: Byron Stingily, OT, Louisville
Jammal Brown is a free agent. If the Redskins can't retain him, they'll need some help at right tackle.

Round 7

213. Washington Redskins: Evan Royster, RB, Penn State
Mike Shanahan's next late-round 1,000-yard rusher?

224. Washington Redskins: Andrew Jackson, G, Fresno State
The Redskins will have to use multiple picks in the 2011 NFL Draft to fix their offensive line.

253. Washington Redskins: Chris White, ILB, Mississippi State
It's hard to imagine Rocky McIntosh sticking around after struggling in the 3-4. Meanwhile, London Fletcher turns 36 in May.

If you're looking for details about McIntosh playing poorly in the 3-4 - a Redskins homer in the comment board questioned this - note that opposing quarterbacks completed 91.5 percent of their passes against McIntosh in 2010, good for second-worst amongst all inside linebackers. McIntosh was also tied for sixth in missed tackles amongst all linebackers (both inside and outside), finishing only three behind the leader, Will Witherspoon. Furthermore, McIntosh surrendered 407 yards after the catch; this was third-worst amongst all inside linebackers, with Kevin Burnett and Paris Lenon topping the charts in that dubious category.

yea...just saw his pick for the Skins on NFL network. I don't like it. He notes that Prince has "ball handling issues". Hello...what other high pick does this remind one of? Treading water IMO.

A www, come one. You telling me you don't want another stonehands?

I agree. I would rather keep Los and plug some other holes.

bingo. if we don't go QB (i.e., someone Shanahan is nuts about) or a gamebreaker like Jones......go lines/lb this year and hope FA and next year's draft turn things around.

per previous posts...QB is the real hole. I have no clue what the long term strategy is.

in my book...an awesome passrush trumps a quality secondary.

Amukamara could be the pick if we actually use the best player approach. The problem with Carlos Rogers is he doesn't get any turnovers. The whole reason Shanahan went 3-4 defense is for turnovers. We can use part of the money that we save on Carlos and get probably two interior lineman and get a compensatory pick too.

I probably wouldn't go this way but I think it's possible.

you know what? I was pretty blase about the whole matter. but now...I'm energized to see the cards laid on the table.

bring it on Mike & Bruce!

My final prediction for tonight is going to be Locker with our first pick. It seems like unless your NE the teams that want to trade back rarely do. I think Jones and Quinn are off the board before ten and we just take our QB. I would rather have Jordon or Watt but we shall see.

Everbody enjoy.

much as I'd like a QB or gamebreaker draftee.....I'll go with a completely contingency based prediction and assume the first goal is maximum number of picks because the team has so many needs. If a desired player like a Julio Jones is there at 10 we trade down for a third and max out on line & lbs with a rb/wr in the late rounds.

if no trade: we go d-line in the first (though I'd prefer Tyron Smith to bookend our tackles for the next 7-10 yrs).

Interesting, apparently, Carolina hasn't settled on Newton:

The Carolina Panthers have narrowed their choices for the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's draft to quarterback Cam Newton, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, cornerback Patrick Peterson and wide receiver A.J. Green, team sources told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio on Wednesday.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/news/story?id=6438623

I thought on read on ESPN bottom line yesterday that Steve Smith has requested a trade from CAR, which might open the door for AJ Green to be the pick. May not affect us too much, but it certainly changes thing.

Interesting. Listening to the BS Report, and Scheffter really like Ponder and hears good things from insiders about Mallett. Lombardi also liked Mallett, said if he gets drafted into the right situation, he could really flourish and surprise.

Peter King is reporting that Rich Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News, one of the most accurate mock draft guys in the business (possibly the MOST accurate), is saying the Skins will use #10 on Christian Ponder.

If true, it would be an epic reach IMHO. :(
