Mac Jones Thread. Where will he go in the draft?

Just sent this to a buddy of mine who is an Eagles fan. He is freaking out. lol

would be SO funny if they draft a QB. What are they going to do with Hurts?

I think, at a very minimum, we've seen that either of those guys (or a combination of the two) can play well enough to make us competitive. If they don't bring in a presumed starter this offseason, I agree it's not a disaster. Always the small chance one of those two emerges as a long-term starter. I don't think Rivera/Turner expect or are counting on that, hence the search. But it is possible.

I may be in the supreme minority here thinking we don't need to draft a QB this year. I am convinced that either Allen or Hieneke step up and lead us.

We need to go OL OL OL OL OL OL OL OL!!

we need to sign our DL to new contracts as well.

Looking at the possible offseason options I'm finding myself feeling the same way. I would say that i would prefer we do take a QB at some point in the 3-7 round range at a minimum. He doesn't have to be the presumed future, but a guy that they believe they might be able to develop and if that dude balls out then great. It could be a guy like Mond or Newman if they're there in the 3rd, or Book or Franks if they're around in the 7th. Keep the pipeline full and continue to keep swinging the axe.

I have to admit I'm a little baffled at the way people view Hieneke. Granted he stepped up for us in a big way in big game but lets be real.. He wasn't even on an NFL roster prior to us signing him .Shoot its been reported Turner was the only coach that showed up for his pro day coming out of college. One would think if he had pro talent he'd be on a roster somewhere for someone. That diving touchdown he separated his shoulder , if that happened in a week 2 contest and he didn't play after that for weeks would we even be talking about him? I think because it was a playoff game with everything on the line our perception of him gets a little squed. Im not here to blast the guy, I loved what he gave us in his very small sample size and I want to see more but I don't want to depend on our starting Qb having to "step" it up I want a bonified starter that's going to lead us .Hieneke has earned the right to compete for a starting job but that shouldn't stop Riveria from bring in a top talent IMO . OL and another receiver opposite 17

he gave us a chance to win that game against Tampa and had the best rating of any of the postseason starters against the Bucs.

He moved well, threw well, played with swagger, and has definitely earned the excitement of the fans.

He came out in an interview when someone asked him about that dive and he said he likely doesn't do that in a regular season game. That the situation regarding a playoff game, as well as him knowing this could be his last chance to impress is what caused him to take a chance like that.

I don't think anyone is anointing him some high level franchise QB. The playoff game earned him exactly what he got. A short term incentive based contract that will allow him to come in and compete for a starting job. I made my comment about running it back with Allen and Heinicke because I don't know that anyone currently on the market is a total package upgrade. Yes there are 'better' QBs potentially available but at what cost? Mariota? He's likely a $20mil cap hit next season and you have to give up assets to get him. Fitzpatrick? It's now coming out that Dak is likely tagged so he's not going to hit free agency. Wilson and Watson likely aren't options... Carr appears to be the Raiders starter next season as Mariota appears to be the player that's getting dangled. Darnold? I'd be interested in bringing him in but he's not locked in as the starter...

If we're gonna add a 'JAG' why not keep what we got and take bigger shots at other positions? We all want a bonified starter, so what's your preference? Who would you prefer we take a shot at?

I would look at Darnold, too. But, like you said, he isn't guaranteed to be starter and how much will he cost?

I would CONSIDER giving up our extra 3rd rounder as a flier, but that may even be a little rich for me. His value is that he's on the final year of his rookie deal so if he flames out then his cap cost is nothing after this season.

Alex Smith was a terrible quarterback his first couple of years in the NFL but as a former #1 pick, he still received support.

Draft position seems to mean so much to people both inside and outside the league when on a consistent basis it has been shown that top quarterbacks in the league aren't necessarily taken in the top 5-7 picks, and not even the first round.

I remember when Trent Green went down with the knee injury in the preseason for St. Louis and the hot topic was who Dick Vermeil was going to trade for to save the season.

He said he had faith in a former Arena quarterback in Kurt Warner and was ridiculed for that. No one else believed in him to be an NFL player, forget being a capable starter.

That is the unknown with guys like Heinicke. You just don't know. The odds may be against him but we have seen quarterbacks at 6'0 succeed (Brees, Wilson) and we have seen quarterbacks who are undrafted make it (Warner, Tony Romo) as well.

For these reasons it was smart to resign Taylor to a 2 year deal to find out.

At the same time because the odds are long you are going to strike gold, the team IMO has to make a move to bring in another passer and not one that lines up as a #3 or #4 pick as a development project alongside Taylor.

Whether that is a veteran who can play in 2021 and help us win a weak division or another younger qb with a stronger arm and better size, etc.

The worst thing we could do is take a quarterback late and then hope that among the Allen, Heinicke, late rounder group that we are going to necessarily have a guy that is ready to help us repeat in 2021 in the NFC East.

SO.... what veteran do you add that can help us win that weak division more than Allen / Heinicke / Rookie?

Let's put it this way, I would rather sign Ryan Fitzpatrick for 2021 than trade assets to the Raiders for Mariota who has never really proven he can consistently throw the ball in the league. He is to me a refined running back.

Fitzpatrick at 36/37 would be a transitional figure and a guy that if Heinicke beat him out would come at a cost where we could have him as a backup.

Those are default type decisions, however.

I don't like the trade market, too much asked for guys that are spotty performers like Mariota. Anyone want to trade for Mitch Trubisky? :p

My take now is that we see how the draft board moves early in Round 1 and perhaps make a move into the top 10-12 picks to take a quarterback.

Either that or stay at #19 and gamble someone drops. That worked out for his in 2017 with Jonathan Allen who was supposed to be a top 5 pick.

There always seems to be a couple of players who suffer a drop due to some late personal information reaching the GMs about their off the field issues or potential injury concerns, etc.

As with Allen and most famously Dan Marino in 1983 those reports are often debunked.

And I'm in the camp that bringing in Fitzpatrick brings little value. I don't think he's good enough to truly take us on a run that goes deep into the playoffs, so any money you spend is that much less you have to spend elsewhere. I agree on the Mariota point, I said so much in an earlier post.

I would rather spend the $5+ mil it's going to take to get Fitz for a year on Tre Boston and add a truly rangy FS in our secondary who is young enough to be here for multiple seasons. The goal should be a championship and Allen imho is as good a bridge as Fitz.

While I am optimistic this team will be a playoff contender at 9-7 or so in 2021, unless Washington trades for Watson or Wilson we are not going to be truly contending for a Super Bowl championship until 2022 at the earliest.

As I said my first choice would be to use this draft to find the quarterback to build with Chase Young and Co. either by moving up or staying at #19.

If we do sign a veteran I do think that Ryan Fitzpatrick represents a better option in the passing game than Kyle Allen.

My point there was even if I was wrong and Allen or Heinicke beat out Fitzpatrick for the #1 job, the money spent on Fitzpatrick would be palatable to have him as a backup on the team in 2021.

Mariota and some others like Darnold require giving up draft capital and neither player at this point has shown the juice is worth the squeeze.

Fitzpatrick offers nothing but a quick flash and chance THAT YEAR at winning it all. We are not that team. He won't be any kind of mentor or anyone we can build long time off of.

Plenty of teams have won a super bowl with a mediocre QB and stud D. We could be one of them if we keep our D together and get a few key pieces like OL and WR.

True, but a veteran like Fitzpatrick who played well in Miami last year on a young team is more likely to be that solid but unspectacular quarterback that a team with a very strong defense takes deep into the playoffs.

In part that is because by signing Fitzpatrick Washington will be able to keep its pick at #19 and add a left tackle or franchise linebacker and continue on in Round 2 to grab a wide receiver or vice versa.

Any of the other quarterback options outside of the draft mean trading draft picks and/or players off our roster.

And that's where I think we differ. I don't think Fitz brings that much more to the table than what we already have, so why spend the money?
