Let's put it this way, I would rather sign Ryan Fitzpatrick for 2021 than trade assets to the Raiders for Mariota who has never really proven he can consistently throw the ball in the league. He is to me a refined running back.
Fitzpatrick at 36/37 would be a transitional figure and a guy that if Heinicke beat him out would come at a cost where we could have him as a backup.
Those are default type decisions, however.
I don't like the trade market, too much asked for guys that are spotty performers like Mariota. Anyone want to trade for Mitch Trubisky?
My take now is that we see how the draft board moves early in Round 1 and perhaps make a move into the top 10-12 picks to take a quarterback.
Either that or stay at #19 and gamble someone drops. That worked out for his in 2017 with Jonathan Allen who was supposed to be a top 5 pick.
There always seems to be a couple of players who suffer a drop due to some late personal information reaching the GMs about their off the field issues or potential injury concerns, etc.
As with Allen and most famously Dan Marino in 1983 those reports are often debunked.
