Let's Make a Deal: The Trade Thread

I don't see it happening, but I thought it would be phenomenal if the Commanders had Terry on one side and DK Metcalf on the other. That would have been a killer combo and would have made me 5-10 times more excited than the Deebo move. Of course, as I said about the Deebo move, whatever moves we "want" in a vacuum --- the reality is we got Deebo for very little in return. I just think even considering that, the risk/reward on Metcalf may be significantly better. I also think the culture fit may have been better too. It is a trade though - and I expect their asking price would be too high, and I think that is most likely the right call. I read the Pats may be in on him; I would think it would be a mistake for them too, but I am not plugged in on their picks/needs.

I just know we need line help.

The Bears gave up a 2026 4th rounder for Joe Thuney (32 yo), who is coming off of 2 1st-team All Pro years and 3 Pro Bowls.
Should we have tried to make that trade?

I am a little worried the plan here is not as solid as I hoped; strong lines ultimately are the main guarantor of sustained success. It seems like the Bears swooped in, made phone calls, and made things happen now with potentially two really good guards. Thuney is on the old side, but his contract is at 1-year 14 mill remaining I believe. See, this is where I do start to wonder about the Deebo move. I think if I was going to get a 1-year stop-gap, I maybe more excited about a Thuney rather than a Samuel. I look at last year and see OL play as a huge problem, and I see Jayden able to make some things happen with average WR talent around him. Yes, he can escape a LOT of pressure... but that should certainly not be the goal. I will say, a 2026 4th rounder is a steep price to pay.

I think Peter’s is looking at this draft, and probably started looking at this draft last year, and holding his nose.

Which is why I think he’s more willing to trade picks this year than he was last year.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was another trade for Hendrickson.

If it was a stacked draft I think the strategy might be different.

That level of insight is smart.

This draft doesn't suck at DL, WR, CB, TE, RB and a few other spots. It's thin at QB and OT, maybe LBer and IOL.

Depending who's there at 29, a trade back, trade away, whatever makes sense. I'd like to load up more on day two picks for sure and definitely picks next year.

Requisite: Why didn't WE nab Christian Kirk with a 7th rounder?
I suspect it's because McLaurin is excellent, Deebo is a YAC guym but wWe still want a field stretching home run hitter. Plus, we need a youngster who will grow alongside Daniels and form a long term tandem. Ertz, Deebo, McLaurin, etc. are at fits for the short or the medium term.

Yeah, I can't comment on the quality of the draft because I don't really follow college football and wouldn't know.

But what I keep hearing is there is "a lot of depth" in the middle rounds.

Middle round players are generally viewed as good, not great, rotational starters. They are the cornerstone of teams, but the possibility of them developing into a blue chip player is lower than players in the first and second round.

Do we need a bunch of those guys? Yes. But we also need difference makers. And if there was a year to trade a mid to late round pick for a difference maker, I think this is the year.

It's also possible while there might be depth at positions, we don't know how deep the draft is for Peters. He might look at the DL and WRs and say, "there are a lot of guys who are between ok to good, but only 2 that we like from a personality and scheme fit." In which case it might be generally deep, but for us, less deep.

Personally, if we can trade back from 29 to somewhere in the second and pick up another pick, that would be fine with me.

But, if it costs our first or second round pick this year to get a difference maker, I'd be ok with it. I'd be all in on Hendrickson. I wouldn't want to give up picks in future years. But giving up picks this year for a difference maker, I'd do that.

One other thing: according to Spotrac, Kirk has a $15m salary for this year and a bonus, and his cap number is going to be $16m. So the 7th is meaningless compensation, but that's a lot of cap space for a guy who hasn't lived up to his promise, even if Kliff loved him back in 'Zona.

Also, remember we did draft McCaffery last year. One thing which came out at the SB in a conversation with Easy Ed McCaffery (aka dad) is Luke was asked to learn each of the WR positions last year, and as we know, he's only been playing WR a few years.

I think Luke could be the big step-up guy from year 1 to year 2 of the rookie class. WRs who are not Randy Moss types tend to take a year or so to really get their feet wet, and Luke is still learning the position.

So combination of probably wanting to develop Luke, probably draft another speed guy, and not pay $16m for Christian Kirk are probably three more reasons we didn't give up a 7th for him.

It feels like that as a fan base we are going a little trade crazy. People want to trade for Hendrikson and Metcalf and everyone else. Maybe it's Snyder fatigue, but I don't want to trade away so many picks.

Hendrickson feels more realistic than Garrett tbh
I agree. I also think it's going to cost less in draft capital. Though Garrett is the better player, both are difference makers.

I get it, but we’re contenders now because of Daniels and our roster is seriously lacking in blue chip players. You could hope to get a good player in the late 2nd, or you could try to trade for a guy who has been totally healthy and racked up 36 sacks the past two seasons, who is 30. Personally, I want to win a Super Bowl and strike while the iron is hot, it’s an unpredictable league and Jayden is carrying way too much dead weight right now for it to be sustainable. We have probably less than 4 years until we hope to give him a comically large contract, and the NFC is overall weak. Part of the advantage of having a guy like Peters is that he has a vision and he aggressively follows it—that doesn’t HAVE to mean competing with only homegrown studs, we’re just damaged as a fanbase.

Good draft for roster depth is a good way to put it. It certainly depends who's there at our picks, but more mid round picks would be nice. I don't think I'm in on Henderson.

Houston is loaded themselves - I feel like you could kinda say the same about them. Dell injury aside. I doubt we draft anyone better than Luke WRT to him needing a youngster.

Nico Diggs Dell Metchie Woods Dalton Schultz add Kirk they are jack stacked. But may want to focus on that OL now.

Great post as usual, Conn. we are not rebuilding, we are a Super Bowl contender with a lot of cap space to work with. It’s a combination that never happened under Snyder so we’re not used to it, but going after good players who become available is exactly what you do. You have to strike while the iron is hot—you never know when the window is going to close, but it always closes faster than you think.

Word is many teams are interested in DK Metcalf. I wonder if WAS has made that call and made any offers. I kind of doubt there's any chance he lands with WAS. I think SEA will prefer an AFC team for him, and I don't think they will lack for teams making decent offers. I imagine WAS has called, --- maybe --- but whatever offer they make is so unlikely to be accepted.
