La el Collins in the 5,6,7 rounds do you do it?

I think this kid got screwed plain and simple. Likely the NFL owes him a major apology for wildly overreacting.

They all held strong and no one apparently violated the spirit of the La'el Collins blackball. But for some reason, at the same time, some of them gladly welcome actual proven scum to their teams.
 
Wow that's frustrating as a fan.......geez.

We could have potentially had the best draft in 15 years if we had just taken him in the 7th.

I have no idea what McLovin was thinking. Or the other GMs for that matter.
 
It wasn't just Scot who had that mind frame. Hindsight is definitely 20/20 but looking at all the cases that have been going on and all the trouble that seems to be wrapped up in this draft you don't really want to take a "risk" in this situation.

Scot made it perfectly clear he wanted all of his draft picks and that they were important to try and build this team not only this year but "for the 2nd contract". He's looking to the future here, not a big splash risk.
 
So if I understand it now ... Collins is firmly in the driver's seat. He can pick his team and won't be bound by the rookie contract scale in terms of length of service. If he can play and his head is on straight, he's going to come out of this all right. And some team has a chance to score big.

But what was the risk? He's a scumbag? Then cut him and waste your 7th round pick. A 7th rounder usually won't even make the team.

The upside? You don't have to spend your 1st round pick next year on an O-lineman. In reality, that decision to not take a shot may have cost us (and every team that passed) the equivalent of a first round pick.

Possible murder is the worst of the worst, and is in no way comparable to being an alcoholic. But with Scot's background, Jay's DUI, and some of Scot's former players.....it's not like we are running a church here.

I understand their hesitancy.....it's just unfortunate.
 
I was once interviewed by police for a fire that was set at one of my businesses. They were doing their proper due diligence, even though I had no involvement or even a possible motive.

Glad I was not a public figure. I'm sure there would be many who would have had me tarred and feathered despite my innocence.

You trying to throw someone's alcohol problems in their face like it compares to murdering an unborn baby is ridiculous. And with that said, I'm not continuing this
 
The question at hand is whether or not one believes the Skins should have taken a flyer on this kid with a 7th rounder on spec. Good points have been made on either side. Let's keep it on the tracks.

The pick would have been wasted period, it was put out there that he would not sign for anything less than 3rd round.

Draft picks are slotted by the CBA (as I understand it) so if we grabbed his rights as a seventh all we'd do is aggravate the situation. He'd sit out and go in as UDFA next year and be pissed at Scot for tying up his rights for the year.

Now he at least has a chance to sign without constraints of the CBA draft slot, open to the highest bidder.

He would not have gone into next year as a free agent, able to sign with any team.

That said, I am not angry with the Redskins on this.

Bobby Beathard and Joe Gibbs wouldn't have drafted him either.

It's just a shame that all of this had to transpire over the draft instead of before it.

But if he is that good he might suffer on his first contract, but not his second.

Ok, thanks Bull, but he'd still be pissed, other than a trade for rights, I don't see the guy signing with whomever tied him up as a 7th and would the wage slot still be enforced into next year even with the trade...... could he also sign with the original team at his slot, get traded but what constraints are there for renegotiation with his new team?

One of the 'effects' of the rookie wage scale that this scenario might not have been accounted for. Being tagged as a 7th rounder for the life of his first contract.

It's certainly possible that he could have chosen to sit out and work at Denny's next year. On the other hand, when push came to shove, he may have decided that a 6 figure salary doing what he loves would have been better.

And if he actually did sit out? He'd only cost himself more money in the future to potential suitors.

I would have called that agent's bluff in a second. No risk really, if we were wrong.
 
Except that the GM had a game plan going in and it was not to waste a pick on a possible head case and/or murder suspect.

If Scot likes him and wants to get him in here then he's free to negotiate market value.

Collins, the LSU standout who went undrafted last week, has signed with the Cowboys, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Thursday.

Once widely expected to be a first-round pick, Collins instead went undrafted after Baton Rouge (La.) police said they wanted to talk to him in connection with the investigation of the murder of his ex-girlfriend and the subsequent death of her baby boy. Given the uncertainty regarding Collins’s status, NFL teams passed on using a pick on him in any of the seven rounds.

However, Baton Rouge police have said from the start that Collins is not a suspect in the case. Moreover, police have said a paternity test found Collins was not the father of the deceased child, according to published reports.
Where Collins fits on a loaded Dallas offensive line remains to be seen, though right tackle and left guard seem to be the most logical spots. The Cowboys also have the luxury of not rushing Collins, and it’s quite possible he could just be a swing tackle in Year One.

Now we get to see him twice (or more) a year, oh well.
 
Jerry is the new Al Davis. Or at least wants to think so.
