Perhaps at some point Gruden is going to wake up and realize that Kirk Cousins is not yet Joe Montana.

With the score at 16-21 and the ball on the 4 yard line with 10 seconds left before the half you simply can't come out of that situation with ZERO points.

After all the problems with confidence the first 2 weeks, you need to come out of that with the 3 points at least.

To drop back and give up the sack/fumble on another pass at the goal line, that's a game-killer.

Gruden still doesn't get it - the Redskins offensive can be effective through the air, but not exclusively.

Cousins is a starting caliber qb but not an elite one.

We need a running game, we need to add the slants and crosses into our offense off the short drop to make more bang-bang plays.

Cousins throwing the ball 40-50 times a game isn't going to work, it didn't work for Joe Gibbs with Joe Theismann in 1981 at 0-5.

I think we learned a lot today, and yes defense came through to win the game, imho.

The line changes in the second half actually helped the Redskins develop an inside running game and helped determine the outcome of the game.

That fourth quarter 6 minute drive that was runs on all but one play was possible because Trent and Ty were dominating the Giants DL on that left side.

This is actually our best offensive line left to right.

Agree with that, but the whole sequence down there would have been a lot better if Gruden had called a timeout instead of allowing Kirk to run down and spike it.

There is no doubt that he makes terrible decisions, but you know, I watch a lot of games. I see a lot of veteran, ELITE QBs even, making similar mistakes. They just don't air those things on highlight reels. But, he does have a tendency to get...flustered & seemingly confused in those clock pressure situations. That's something that can be coached out of him; it's a matter of whether or not they will.

That said, I still like him. I think he can do great things if he settles down or gets his head right or does whatever it is he needs to do to get his focus back.

I guess the positive is at least the staff listened.

The negative, they couldn't figure that out on their own.

Red Auerbach used to talk about as a coach, having a feel for the game, meaning, an idea of what's going on and adjusting accordingly.

Gruden and McVay seem to struggle with that.

Sally Jenkins is in her traditional wheelhouse, stating that the reason the coaches called the running plays instead of the "cute" plays the obviously wanted to call was because a player on the field gestured at them. Hard for me to read her stuff.

By the way, the "gesture" from Davis that Jenkins fixated on, and read so much into, was impossible to read intent into. Just watched a replay of that last drive ... it came just after Matt Jones carried to the Giants 19, setting up 3rd and 3 as the clock wound down toward the 2 minute warning. Honestly, to me it looks more like Davis wants Gruden to hurry up and get the next play called prior to the 2-minute warning than it does, in Sally World,

Demanding? Insisting? Determined to keep stomach-punching? She is apparently quite the lip- or body-language reader, or clairvoyant.

At any rate, the subsequent call TO run it into the stacked line on 3rd down actually had me shaking my head. I figured, you get that first down there, you can basically run the clock down and make NY burn its time outs, then if necessary kick the winning FG leaving them too little time for any last-gasp drive of their own. I'm not sure about anyone else, but when we didn't aggressively try to convert there, and instead opted to kick the FG with 1:50 left, I thought NY was going to march right down the field and kick a winning FG of their own.

Until Sua Cravens made the play of the year a couple plays later that might just end up giving us a season.

This game will be pretty telling for Kirk I think. Cleveland's defense is a 'get right' challenge seeing how they're in upper 20's in most defensive stats. Basically as shitty as our defense!

If Kirk plays lights out Sunday I for one can maybe chalk up the 1st 2 bed shittings as rust. Possibly he was pressuring with the contract on his mind?
