Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Best case scenario: Cousins is just setting us up for another "You like that"

Worst case scenario is Cousins is Mark Rypien/Gus Frerotte 2.0.

Cousins says the right things but my gut feeling is he is a momentum player. If things are going well and the defense is making plays and we have some steam, he is capable of doing some nice things and getting in a rhythm.

But what he is not is an anchor player for your franchise to depend upon to CARRY the momentum and LEAD the team consistently.

Being a franchise quarterback means playing well and making plays at the critical time to overcome a mediocre performance overall by the club and post a W.

Cousins doesn't do that. He is not that guy.

Just be glad the team didn't give him $60M guaranteed in a multi-year deal.

SKins FTW, I don't agree with that.

Mark Rypien had some excellent games in 1989 and lead the Redskins to the playoffs in 1990 before losing to Joe Montana on the road.

That set up the 1991 season that he had with the SB win.

Cousins showed in the first two games against the Steelers and Cowboys that he is not capable of being patient and avoiding the key turnovers by forcing the ball at critical times.

Rypien learned not to do that.

Rypien learned not to do that.

And he unlearned it really quick once he no longer had a impenetrable Ol and dominant running game.

And that SF game is one I could easily see Cousins performing similarly. In fact easily moving the ball down field and throwing picks used to be a Cousins trademark.

I like the way you put this. I agree. At least, so far, anyway. Although, I believe we've seen him do it; we've seen him take charge & take the lead & lead us into a victory. Against Tampa Bay, I felt like that's what he did.

To be truthful, I see more problems with the coaching & gameplanning. Especially on Defense. They almost seem lost to me, like they aren't sure what their assignment is when the opponent doesn't do what he's supposed to according to their gameplan.

That said, I sure would like to have a QB that is consistent from season to season & we can count on to play well. But, it almost (sarcasm included) seems like we are cursed in this area. I like Cousins, but...c'mon man. There was easily 3 tds left on the field simply because he overthrew Jackson twice & Crowder once that were basically guaranteed scores if the throw is right. I don't know...I just don't know anymore. Hail to the Redskins anyway.

I did not watch the game so I don't have much to say...all I know is that if you have 1st and goal and throw an INT mid-way through the 4th Q with only a 3 point lead, chances are the front office made the correct decision not to sign you to a long term deal.

I know it's pre-mature, but my fears after last year's playoff game seem to be accurate, Kirk Cousins will struggle to elevate his game in the big ones. I have a stinking feeling we're going to be in need of a franchise QB next off-season.

But guys like Dalton, Romo, Rivers, and Flacco have had similar problems and still got paid.

If Cousins stops overthrowing the receiver he could be right back where he left off last year. It would have been a blowout if he'd have hit on those.

Instead we get to watch Joe Berry (Manilow) show off his 2008 Lions defense.

Two games don't write the book on a QB. Look at Andrew Luck for God's sake. Cousins is a quality starter and I believe he'll be back.

This is season #5 for Cousins, he's got plenty of film to write a story, an accurate one...I believe. This is not a 2 game book.

The same thing keeps coming back to haunt him...the big games. Lat year we lost to a terrible Cowturds team, Cousins looked bad...that was a game that could have propelled us to locking up the division. Then he totally crapped the bed in the playoffs.

I think we see what we're going to get from him, I think the story has been told. Now...with a suspect defense with a coordinator who seems to be vanilla, and a run game that makes up only 1/3 of the offense, we need a QB who can command the field. Kirk hasn't proven he can get it done when the spotlight is on.

Look, we have 14 games left in the season...this is far from over, but unless we have the players in place to surround Cousins, we won't win many. In Fact, my feeling is that Cousins won't do enough to warrant a long term deal, in light of the lack of support he has.

Maybe the FO is looking to secure him at a lesser deal knowing they'll need to put an entire team around him.

He looked pretty commanding the last 8 games of 2015. He was arguably the best QB in theNFL for that stretch.

Against lesser talent...and the most important game of those 8 (to that point), one that would have cemented the division title...he shit the bed.

I'm not saying we can't win with Kirk, I'm saying we have a lot more to do to get near competing with the best in the league and we cannot depend on Kirk to get us over that hump.

We needed to win this game today. We had the lead in the fourth quarter at home and were gifted a series in Dallas territory with a chance to go up by 10 which probably would have been enough.

But that failure was part of an awful day in the red zone.

Nothing but failed fade passes and field goals.

The return of Kirk "Cybil" Cousins.

We could have gotten the same, or better, performance from Colt and saved $20mil.

This about sums it up for yesterdays showing.......

Let's be blunt for a moment: With almost any other starting NFL quarterback, the Redskins win this game. The Cowboys' defense didn't stop Washington's offense; Cousins' blunders stopped Washington's offense.

I heard a lot about Dak being a joke for a while now, but he looks to be fairly solid for a rookie after two games, and don't know if Romo will ever see the field again....

Cousins was outplayed by rookie Dak Prescott, who started his first career road game Sunday. Outside of stat-sheet glancers, these two performances weren't all that close. One quarterback stood confidently, evaded rushers to find check downs, put the ball in tight windows when necessary, moved the chains in key situations and didn't hurt his team with turnovers. The other quarterback was Kirk Cousins.

Cousins killed us yesterday. I mentioned late in the game chat he should have gotten sent to the bench, with Colt finishing out the game. I understand you normally want to stick with your guy, but Kirk needs a reminder that rookie mistakes are not acceptable at this point in his career. Some may think I'm crazy, and granted, my feed to watch was choppy, but I didn't see a lot of dropped passes, just mostly of bad passes. When you're not running the ball, and the guys are catching it when you get it to them, the fault lies with the QB. I was happy to see Gruden say at the half that Kirk needed to get his stuff together, but he needed to do more late in the game.

Gruden: Can't put loss to Cowboys all on Kirk Cousins - NFL.com

I read this morning there are already grumblings in the locker room about Cousins. It's not a good sign, true or not, where offensive players are complaining about the QB.

Cousins seems to be trying to be the hero and throw at WR's versus to them. He is pressing. Is he trying to justify the Franchise Tag?

All I know is he needs to do a 180 if he wants a long term deal.

I wonder right now if he regrets not signing that deal back in the spring?

Back in preseason Gruden decided to rest our guys for 2nd preseason game. He had all kinds of reasons.

Then 3rd game we struggle offensively to score TD's. Now, we're seeing the same thing in regular season. Seem's like Gruden's plan backfired and has cost the team chemistry and timing.

Big Ben threw dimes to Antonio Brown. Cousins has done this before, plus has hit guys in stride.

It all circles back to coaching.

Aside from this one thing, I can't argue with the rest of your post. But...the only problem I have with this is that he is already clearly shaken in confidence for some reason. I don't know that benching him for making the same mistakes that every other QB makes is the best solution. Russell Wilson threw an INT on the goal line in the Super Bowl & everyone in the world wondered why he was even throwing it. Which is pretty much what I was wondering when Cousins threw his INT in the Endzone this week. Now, mind you, I am in no way comparing the 2 QBs or even situations. Just pointing out that the mistakes he made are mistakes that can't be fixed by benching him, but rather by going back out & learning from them on the field.

But, I understand your thinking & frustration. Something needs to change. His practice routine or who he's talking to or...I don't know, the cereal he eats? Whatever it is, one thing I will agree with. If he doesn't turn this around & QUICK, McCoy SHOULD replace him.

Playing with your contract and future on the line is harder than Cousins thought it would be.

Cousins is not your prototypical NFL quarterback. He is a quiet and self-contained and doesn't really seem to have that killer instinct you see guys like Brady and Aaron Rodgers have. He gets up, he gets down visibly based upon what is happening on the field. He seems to have bouts of self-doubt.

For a guy like Von Miller, playing with a franchise designation and bulling his way to a new contract after the Super Bowl, that added pressure only made him play better.

I don't get the impression Cousins is going to be like that.

Kirk's regression so far this season is by far my biggest concern and disappointment. We knew going in the defense was going to be average at best, and they've been just about what we expected. Never thought we were going to beat Pittsburgh with our defense, but I did think Kirk and the pass offense would at least make a game of it. And I really thought they'd be able to do enough against Dallas to overcome the defensive shortcomings.

If Kirk had been anything close to the red zone QB he was in 2016, we beat Dallas fairly handily, by simply outscoring them. Six trips to the red zone--42 potential points--and we get 23. And that doesn't even counts the 14 points lost on the overthrow to Crowder early and the underthrow to Docston late. Last year those are both TD's. The offensive production given the opportunities against Dallas was simply not good enough, and I put that squarely on Kirk's apparently shaken confidence. His decision-making and body language in the red zone is night and day from the second half of last year, and so far we've gotten zero real intel or idea about why.

If he doesn't get over whatever it is that's ailing him, with the substandard defense we are fielding yet again, 2016 could quickly turn into a disaster.
