Interesting it will be to see what the media does as the season progresses, perhaps weekly stock quotes after each game based on Kirk's performance will be issued.

—To clarify something that I’ve had numerous questions about, the Redskins and Kirk Cousins now can’t agree to a contract extension until the day after the final regular season game. The team can talk to Cousins’ agent but they can’t send a contract to the league until January 2, the day after their regular season finale. As Cousins said in a press conference during OTAs, it’s “see you on the other side” for both the team and the player. They will have from January 2 until early March to reach an agreement before the team will have to decide whether or not to use the franchise tag again. That move would give Cousins either 120 percent of his 2016 salary or the quarterback franchise tag salary, whichever is higher. It is very likely that the former option will be the bigger salary.

Gary Kubiak was a career backup qb in the NFL.

He just won the last Super Bowl.

The really rare thing in the NFL is seeing a head coach that used to be a top quarterback win a championship.

Most top quarterbacks never go into coaching.

Because you are a top NFL qb doesn't mean you are going to be a good teacher and have the patience to develop players in the league in your own image.

Nothing new to us, just reiterates Kirk's situation........ hope he gets it done......and in spades.

But it’s about having two, three, four years. Lucky for us, we’re in a position to look at him another year. And he’s in a position to really put a stamp on himself as a quarterback in the National Football League. Really, it’s a win-win situation. We want to keep Kirk. There’s no doubt about that, and he wants to prove himself, which is hats off to him. And we’ll get something done, but we fully anticipate him improving in a big way this year.”

I agreed with it when it was written in January. That's why I was in favor of tagging him.
 
Good to great quarterbacks elevate the play of average receivers. We actually want to see Kirk without the star receivers to see for sure if he is the answer. If we truely are an 8-9 win type team, then we must have more productive play from the QB.

On the other hand, if he is what he is and can't elevate other players, then this team simply can't afford mistakes and penalties and expect success. It looks more and more like the NFC East is made up of same type teams with no real separation.
 
Unless he totally blows up, he'll be playing somewhere next year at an absolute minimum as a backup. Hopefully it'll work out that he hangs around Redskin Park as the man for a long time. But seeing how many backup as well as some marginal starting QBs are still hanging around the league and making pretty good coin at the same time really no reason for his camp to fight for a long term deal. He gets a one year big payday now and the contract will work it'self out next year one way or another. Maybe he gets tagged again next year - another $20m. Not likely but not impossible. In any case, he's not going to be on the bread line anytime in the near future.

Chase Daniels, picked up as a UDFA by Washington wound up with the Saints for a few years, then to KC for three more (for $10m total) then landed a $7m @ year for 3 year contract ($21m\$12m guaranteed) in Filthy. On the other hand that is the e-Gals. He's done quite well for a guy with 77 attempts in 7 years. Nothing against him just shows how long a player can hang around.
 
If we're to believe what we hear from the pundits claiming that our receivers are having great camps then maybe we need to decide if it's contract related, QB related or some of both.

We always hear that the 'great ones' elevate the games of those around them. Seems to me that guys coming into camp in great shape and wanting to work hard is at least a manifestation of that.

Kirk might not have all of the physical tools going for him but his preparation and work ethic appears to have had some effect on his mates on the field.

Getting established 'stars' to work harder in training camp has to have some merit, if it conveys to a successful season then all the better.
 
Kirk Cousins Will Be A Top-10 Quarterback In 2016

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is no stranger to people doubting his athletic abilities thus looking for reasons to not commit to him. However, 2016 should be the year Cousins forces doubters to concede to what he truly is, and has been: a top-10 quarterback in the NFL.

As outlined in a previous column, the lack of commitment by coaches stretches all the way back to Cousins’ youth when during his sixth-grade year his team rejected from him the “A” squad altogether because they didn’t want him at quarterback. He proceeded to win a championship with the “B” squad at the position that very season.

During high school, he wanted to try his hand at basketball and the coach told him he’d have to be the third-string point guard if he wanted on the team. In the season’s first game, he took over as the team’s starting point guard by halftime and didn’t relinquish the position for the rest of the year.

The pattern didn’t stop in college when again, Michigan State reluctantly accepted Cousins, only giving the home-state product a scholarship because they couldn’t land their No. 1 desired option in Nick Foles.

In 2012, Cousins was the eighth quarterback taken in the NFL draft behind the likes of Brandon Weeden, Brock Osweiler, Ryan Tannehill, Robert Griffin III and again, Foles. In fact, only three other quarterbacks were taken in the draft behind Cousins. Those guys? Ryan Lindley, B.J. Coleman and Chandler Harnish.

That speaks for itself.

During the 2015-16 offseason, the Redskins decided to continue the narrative of being reluctant to commit by not giving Cousins a long-term franchise quarterback deal via slapping the franchise tag on him. Now, as Cousins embarks upon the league’s proverbial “prove it” year, and given his track record to date, is there really any doubt what he will do in the nation’s capital in 2016?

There shouldn’t be. And not just because of his pre-NFL pattern of perseverance...

So many years of poor QB play still holds sway over my psyche. I want to believe he's the guy, I do think he has the capability. One of my main concerns is if he has the mental make up. That's always one of my primary concerns with a QB. There are tons of super athletic QB's that never quite get it done because they don't have the correct mental make up. It seems like he may have it. I certainly hope so.

Love this. :D

I hope Kirk succeeds this year I really do. I feel that as a QB he did his time on the bench and as a reserve and has earned this shot. He shows passion and enthusiasm and his teammates actually seem to like him rather than just respect him. Never really got that sense much with RGIII. His team mates said nice things, but till now I never realized there was that sense of something missing there.

cornerback Bashaud Breeland wasn’t lined up correctly before a play in a recent practice, Cousins started to scream that he could have quick-snapped Breeland for an easy touchdown, getting fired up about a play that didn’t even happen. “I think on some days there are guys who are not feeling practice and then he starts chirping and guys pick the energy up,” Will Compton said.
 
Scotty WAS right in not paying Cousins long term.

He's just a guy.

The search for a franchise guy continues.
 
Just like Jay Schroeder,Doug Williams and Mark Rypien,

Kirk Cousins is a journeyman who can flash but he's no bedrock,franchise QB.

The brilliance of Joe Gibbs was getting journeymen talent like the aforementioned, to flash just enough to win.

Jay Gruden and Sean McVay do not possess that kind of coaching acumen.

Basically, we're screwed yet again at QB.
