OK... Cousins wasn't a huge problem this game... In fact, there was little to complain about with his game because the receivers didn't give him an opportunity to screw up, because they were too busy screwing up.

Only complaints this game should really be directed at Jay Gruden, but if I have to pick nits...

1) Cousins still has a tendency to throw at receivers who are covered and/or about to get blasted...
2) Cousins improved in the mid-range, but still can't hit a target over 20 yards.

None of those lost the game or contributed to the loss... Overall, I give him a solid 'B', graded on a curve... because the rest of the team was really bad (minus the OL who generally get the 'A').

This might have been an opportunity for Kirk to shine... The pass to Garcon that was intercepted was a really decent pass, only slightly off-target, but a very catchable ball. A lot of the drops weren't as crucial, since most of them wouldn't have moved the chains at all. I would say about 3 of the drops were important enough to impact the performance of the offense overall. The one that Crowder dropped, he was turning his head before the ball got there because he was going to get blasted... The biggest drops of the game were Garcon & Carrier... Carrier drop was HUGE and would've really helped create some momentum. Of course, it's not like the Patriots didn't have a similar drop & still managed to score 27.

The biggest factor in the reduced offensive performance was Gruden & McVay... They HAVE to get back to Alfred Morris. I don't care what they think Matt Jones is GOING to become... He isn't there yet, and Alfred has proven he already is the last 4 years. You want to see Kirk Cousins' development? Run the damned ball...

Carrier was about 20 yards downfield and was wide open... Easy throw for any professional QB. Garcon was about 15-18 yards. I consider these mid-range passes. I think he was more limited by game plan than ability in this game. Unfortunately, we didn't really get to see his passes over 20 yards. New England defense played well, but generally kept everything in front of them & waited for us to implode. You have to play perfect to beat the Patriots & we weren't even close to perfect. It wasn't Cousins fault. Again, I called my critiques "nits", so please take that into account.

And I have been pounding this drum for a while...we have no one on this team who can get open downfield...our receivers cannot get separation past 20 yards. They have a hard time getting separation past 10 yards.

The most over rated part of our team is our WR's. Crowder is gonna be a good one, Garcon is a very solid #2 on a good team, doesn't seem to be able to be a true #1 here. Ross is fast but can't break away from the defender, Grant has trouble getting open, too. Jackson? Well...we saw what the whiuny little jackass could do yesterday...first catch coming back and he comes up limp, again.

We need a true #1 on this team, someone defense fear. We don't have it. Right now we have Garcon and Crowder...the rest are Meh.
 
I think DJax is a number 1 when he's completely healthy, and at least he gets open down field (when healthy)... Garcon has at times looked like a number 1... and can dominate in the short-to-mid range. Jordan Reed also dominates in the short-to-mid range. Nobody on this team looks good on the fade in the end zone. We don't have an AJ Green, OBJ, Megatron (circa 2012), Amari Cooper (circa 2018)... But collectively, we have a good group of WRs (maybe even a bit better on paper than the Patriots have). So, why can't we succeed with these guys? Because our coaching is average, our scheme is average, and we have no identity...

He wasn't even a #1 at Philly. He led them in receptions one time in his career...his last season with them.


Oh and part of my argument included his inability to get on the field. You can't be a #1 if you're not playing.

Yes, I did put some caveats in there. There are about 5 guys who we could qualify as "number 1" guy, but there are 32 teams... So, I think it's debatable here.

IMO, DJax is top 5 in the league in terms of getting open and adjusting to the deep ball (Maybe even the best).

You have valid arguments for why he doesn't meet your standards for a number 1, but I think it's reasonable to put him in top 15 of the league when he is healthy. I think we can agree that the moments that he has "flashed" in his 1.5 years here have probably been the best/most exciting moments during that time. Look at what Nick Foles & the Eagle's offense have been without DJax... Anyway, I'll stand by my comment, but I'll accept you have valid arguments.
 
I'd be more inclined to bend to prevailing sentiment were the assessments as "unbiased" and granular during the downturns in the performance curve.

a little consistency might help as well. garcon catches a really tough play to win a game...."yea Pierre. You're the best! what a great play"....Garcon drops a pass in a the Pats game..."we need to get rid of this guy. he stinks."

DeSean Jackson is not a true #1 receiver on a contending team. At his size he is not a guy you count on for a third down conversion over the middle or an intermediate out. He is a deep threat that when he is not at 100% with his speed, is not of much use to the team.

Jackson would be a GREAT #2 receiver next to a guy like Julio Jones or AJ Green that consumes the attention of the defense and guarantees Jackson single coverage down the field.

The elite receivers in this league are guys that can be counted on to move the sticks, block for the run and get deep as well.

Jackson is not at that level.

He's a weapon, but a niche performer.

Right. Can you provide one example of someone posting something even remotely like that?
 
I think Jackson COULD have become a legit #1 in the NFL. His speed, burst, ball skills ... all fabulous. But it would have required him to subsume his ego and tough-guy act, I think, and become a true master of his craft. Never really got the sense he was about that stuff though.
 
Jackson has too many outside interests to be 100% committed to his football career. He milked the shoulder stinger for over a month during the preseason. He stayed away from all the offseason activities. At 29, he seems like a guy who has one foot in the game and one foot out.

I think part of the reason he likes being here is he gets away with a lot.

Do you think this guy would last a New York minute in New England or Denver?

Bellichick wouldn't have signed him in the first place.

He wants guys that want to win a ring more than anything else.

When guys start to think about their next career when they are still working their first job, it's time for them to go.

Because their focus and concentration is less than 100% and that's not fair to the other 52 players on the team.
 
Look, I was against signing Jackson in the first place so it's not that I disagree about most of this. But I'd just like to point out that New England ain't perfect. When you have Tom Brady you can sign a guy like, say ... Randy Moss, and get away with it.
 
But the trick is if he does sign with NE he won't act like the guy he has here.

He will attend the offseason workouts and come to camp and preseason conditioned and ready to go.

People forget that Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Aqib Talib all went to NE after having issues elsewhere and behaved themselves.

The truth is though that 3 catches for 15 yards is as if Jackson wasn't even on the field.

From what I could see Malcolm Butler pretty much covered him man up during the game.

He wasn't quiet because Cousins didn't want to stretch the field, he was quiet because he wasn't open very often.
 
He's not 100% - you could easily see he had no 2nd gear. I agree that he's always been a limited WR. Incredibly gifted but limited to a certain role. We'll need to find a real #1 before much longer.

Has anyone looked at Kirk Cousins 2014 vs Kirk Cousins 2015? People say he's performed much better, but...

The team is scoring fewer points... So, the improved 3rd down percentage & Red Zone percentage isn't really buying us much.

Cousins has played 8 games in 2015 (2 more than last year... more like 2.5 more than last year, but let's go with it)...

Cousins has thrown 104 more passes, but has the same number of TDs & INTs as he did in 2014... So, he is improved in INT/PA, but he is down in TD/PA.

His completion percentage is up, but his yards per attempt is down dramatically. He is averaging 2 yards less per attempt.

I would argue that in 2015, Kirk Cousins development has been a complete wash from 2014... Yes, he is developing leadership skills, but it isn't actually translating significantly to success of the offense. I'll just blame Gruden here.
