Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Yeah - that's a pretty tough hill for a team where ours is to climb. I'm operating under the 'any given Sunday' theory :)

to see whether they have improved enough not to be crushed. a game well played against the top tier has some meaning for down the road.

Agreed. If we were at full strength I think we'd have enough talent to compete regardless f opponent. Not sure if we can right now. Best chance we have is for someone to are up with a career day, be that Cousins with a couple long bombs for TDs, a DL-man forcing fumbles, or a 3 INT game by Breeland. It may take something unexpected like that to give us a chance to pull a shocker.

We're Redskins fans who have developed a streak of masochism in us during the last 18 years.

I'm not expecting a lot without a run game.

masochism or bow to reality?

recall that game several years ago, early in the season, when we thought we had a fairly good team...went up to Foxboro and were crushed? Didn't we give up something like 52 points in that game?

I'd be happy seeing constant pass rush pressure on Brady and no INTs.

That was almost 10 years ago when Gibbs was coaching, just 4 years ago we played them to the end...only to have Rex throw an INT after a long drive that got us close to tying it with 20 seconds left. There were also some questionable calls that took points off the board for us, a BS push off call against Moss that took away a TD and a BS late hit call against London Fletcher on Brady on 3rd and long that extended a drive for them they ended scoring a TD.

Granted, we played that one at FedEx Field, I am not saying we are going to go to Foxborough and beat the best team in football, but we are not out of it before it is played. Like you've said, a decent showing against the defending Super Bowl champs would go a long way, especially after the rally to win last week.

So, if you let Kirk go, who starts next year? A free agent? Rookie draft pick?
Like I said in a previous post, there are going to be a lot of changes this offseason. Fitzpatrick sucks, but he signed for $4M/year on a 2 year deal with around $4M guaranteed. Kirk isn't so great that he'll be someone to commit lots of money to over many years. So, you have draft and free agency to pick up someone. You can also let Kirk & RGIII hit the open market and see if you can re-sign one of them on a cheaper deal.

Kirk will sign a reasonable deal here if we decide to keep him. He's familiar with the system. He's not gonna get a 10 mil a year offer anywhere. Griffs contract has no bearing on what we do with Kirks. He'd have to light up every game the rest of the way to have any significant leverage. Unless he stinks it up going forward, I'd be very surprised if we let him hit the market. Unless we sign a vet to come in an start next year, Kirk will be needed at least another year. The absolute best situation is he puts it all together and earns a good contract. :)

What you forget is that for us to retain him, we have to offer him a contract that guarantees him transition/franchise tag money in the 1st year... Or we have to release him and allow him to hit the open market.

Maybe we can sign him for less, but in a league where Gabbert is starting... who knows what happens when Cousins and RGIII hits the open market. Look at the contracts that were given to Cassel & Flynn over the years. I'd rather take a one year hit on either Cousins or RGIII than commit to multiple years when they probably aren't the long term solution. Tagging Cousins & drafting the future may be the way to go. You can also pickup McCoy or another "gap" solution in FA rather than pay for an expensive commitment. While none of the solutions are exciting, you can probably still succeed with an average QB and continue to build other areas of your team while the QB of the future gains experience waiting in the wings.

BTW, if we're able to draft Carson Wentz in the 2nd round and let him sit a year, I'd be happy with that (even if we spend 1 year paying Kirk Cousins a transition/franchise tag).

We beat 'em in 2003... Steve Spurrier was coach. :) I haven't been paying close attention, and I'm sure someone mentioned that.

Why do we have to offer him franchise money? He's a free agent after this season. He can sign whatever deal he wants. We're not going to franchise him to keep him from leaving. Unless he plays lights out, in which case he'll get a good offer to stay. He may get the equivalent of 1 years franchise money guarenteed over the length of the contract, but at that point he'll have earned it.

IIRC, the 'Skins were the last team Brady had yet to beat... well... until he beat us the last two times we played, of course.

Before I say anything more, please check out this page: Quarterback Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap

Unless another QB signs a contract into the top 5-10, we can probably safely assume that transition tag will be ~$20.5 and the franchise tag will be ~$21.5.

I'd argue that today it's pretty difficult to get anything other than a journeyman QB for less than $10M/year... and the salary cap is supposed to be much higher this offseason. So, in future dollars, Kirk Cousins will probably do pretty well on the open market. If you want a 1-year rental on a player as a gap solution, you'll also likely pay a premium over someone who wants to invest in Cousins to see if he is the QB of that team's future.

I've said a lot about this topic, so I'll try to just sum it up this way... It's unlikely that Cousins accepts less than $20M guaranteed money in the 1st year to sign before hitting the open market, because that's where his leverage is. Maybe a 2 year, $24M deal with $20M guaranteed makes sense for Cousins & maybe team too. You basically give him the Nick Foles deal, but he gets more guaranteed in signing bonus and it would still be a short-term deal. You can add a year and give him more money over time, but you have to give him the $20M in the 1st year (because that's what he'd get if you transition him). You cut him in 2018 (post-June), you create $10M in dead cap in 2019...

If he's not worth this, you let him hit the open market and then you either try to sign him back for less or go with one of the other available QBs... It's just numbers... it's business. That's how it works out.

Cousins isn't going to accept less money for an opportunity when he can have money in hand and get an opportunity somewhere else. We've proven we aren't a stable situation for any QB, so it's likely we'll just have a journeyman next year. Just one man's opinion...

If Cousins accepts less, there is something keeping him here... Family or something like that.

The only way Cousins is not on the roster next year is if he suffers a career ending injury.

He's shown enough to muddle through a season.

I think the only way he's on the roster is AFTER he tested the market... unless we tag him. He isn't signing a hometown discount unless he sucks... Do we really want him under those circumstances?

Again we gravitate to extremes. If the Redskins decide they want Kirk here after this year, they will neither low ball him nor will they franchise him and pay him a huge salary. They'll more than likely offer him something reasonable and leave the choice to him. And he will weigh multiple factors in his decision, since that's what real people (not the cartoon characters we try to turn them into) do.

Scot is known for his great deals and negotiations. We got good players here for cheap...I dont see that changing.

Would The Hoodie (TM) by chance be interested in trading Tom Brady for KC1... ? Seeing as he's so in love with him an all.

YOU LIKE THAT?!!!?!?!??

Nick

Barring total disaster, Kirk's our starter next season.

We won't be drafting high enough to get one of the top QBs.

The QBs taken in later rounds won't be ready to start week 1.

And the veteran options out there absolutely suck.
