Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Pretty bad example being they win because they have a mobile QB, and can get away with less then perfect pass protection. Just like the line we've had up until this season, the one meant to have a mobile QB behind it.

Last time I checked Seattle was 3-4.

If the point is with a crappy OL you too can have a 3-4 team ...uh ... point taken?

Sayin'
I thought it was a joe Montana, west coast offense, tom brady, Peyton manning, Griffin, gruden, my next door neighbors cousins thread?

Yeah, I had the same thought Henry :)

And, in all seriousness, you guys talk about whatever you want. It's never been our style to restrict threads. They go where they go. I think Griffin will be gone for 4 years and some of you guys will still be handwringing over the travesty of it all. I suggest more beer. Works for me.

I will admit right now I am going to be wringing my hands over how horribly the Griffin situation was handled for probably longer than four years. You may as well get used to me bringing it up. :)

Wilson is on pace for 70 sacks this season.

you trying to create walsh and montana out of gruden and cousins is like me trying to put a loud muffler on my mazda and call it a GTO.

that was lightning in a bottle and a dynasty right there. Montana, Craig, Rathman, Taylor, Rice...and some chumps on defense. one of who cut his finger off to be able to play the next game ;-)
I'm more of a hemi mopar guy but the old goats were ok.
Ran across this 'tang parked awkwardly and thought of your comments.

You're right, the '9ers back when were a hellava team, an assembly of guys that's hard to duplicate today

And no, I wasn't trying to make gruden and cousins into anything more than what they are, two blokes trying to get their act together and succeed at their chosen profession.

.

Really? The 49ers? Were they?

I don't recall. I think I was distracted by this awsome little team in Washington that won a bunch of superball thingies around the same time...

:p

Well ok. I sure seems like you're saying that.

But whatever. I hope Cooley is right and I'm wrong. I hope we're somehow just not seeing greatness and it will show itself in spades over the next few months.

But Cousins' final nine games mirror his first seven, I sure hope he gets starter money somewhere else. That's what I'VE been saying this whole time.

greatness self-identifies when it bests other greatness. Cousins is a long ways from having done that. and when he slips...it's suddenly a matter of the surrounding cast. hmmmm....that sure sounds familiar.

I know you guys are damaged and bitter ('battered wife syndrome'?), but seriously, the ability and performance of the other 10 guys and all the subs (those not in IR or the injury list) really does matter :)

We all understand that all NFL teams have injuries, but this has been a particularly tough start to a season on that front, and as a rebuilding team our depth is not what we'd like it to be.

It does impact the QB. Look at the difference in the games Cousins had Jordan Reed available as an example.

What's the measuring rod? sounds great as a common sense concept....but when one tries to organize a scale that accurately captures the differences - very hard to do. in short...meaningless in some respects. too many factors in play: depth, team cohesion, coaching staff flexibility, will power...others. if two teams with injured starters play one another....on average....how does one measure BEFORE THE GAME the relative expected impacts to realize a good prediction? is McRib that much worse than Lich? I don't think so. Is Djax all that great? Stats-wise...yup. but in terms of outcomes? we found ways to lose, a lot, while he played injury free. Has the pass blocking suffered all that much with the starting center, LG, LT out of the game? I don't think so. running game? maybe. but then the Cooley acolytes have to ask if he is right when he claims the backs are not making the right choices when holes are there.

what I see is human nature in play: positions are adopted and all sides pick favored rationalizations to support their notions...except, of course, when the occasional "it's only wins that matter" is laced into the conversation. even though that's knida ambiguous as well (e.g., wins against whom? season or playoff wins? championships?)

let's be frank: there are dozens of variables in play when it comes to assessing performance. anyone can bend the measures to suit an argument...except when the championship is won.

I've always liked Tiger's concluding thought on the matter: "Second place is for the first loser."

I do see eye to eye with you on one thing: we are rebuilding and now is the time to seek out signs of progress. Go McL!!!! Do your thing!

I don't disagree with most of that...I ultimately am right on the same page with you, Henry, and others. We'll know Cousins is the guy when he shows he's the guy. I'm just saying it's silly to pretend it's all about him. That's just a nonsense concept and yet we frequently post as if, in fact, it's all about him. And Henry, I have to disagree, it's not 'kinda all about the QB'. The QB position is crucial. And if you have an absolute star at the spot, yeah, he can make everyone around him better and even carry a team to wins on his back at times. But supporting casts matter - a lot.

And yeah Al, there are positions where when the starter goes down and a backup has to step in, the dropoff is not precipitous. But is Anthony McCoy an equal of Niles Paul? Is Derek Carrier equivalent to Jordan Reed? Is Josh Leribeus an equal of...well, any solid center?

And even the injuries on defense impact situationally how tough or easy our offense has it to a certain extent. We still have a lot of holes on this team. Those aren't excuses just factors I think should be taken into account when assessing a QB no matter who it is. I'd also factor in the QB being in year 2 of a new offense with a new QBs coach and new primary play caller.

Wow.

Now, we're damaged and bitter. Hmmm...I'd guess most of us are being realistic.

We haven't really seen a fundamental improvement in the run game. We're relying on Kirk's arm for offense...that's pretty scary. We've lost one starter from the o-line, and have ended up with Reed at TE (an improvement over the starters who are out.) Hell, even Shanny's run game was better than what we have now.

I'd say the coaches inability to decide a starting running back has hurt us more than any injuries.

But, for some reason, Gruden is getting another year's pass from some on this site because, well, we have a new GM?

Doesn't make sense to me.

It's called 'humor' tr1. Lighten up :)

The running game isn't working - that's obvious but again injuries to the line have not helped. I don't know if picking one guy solves that - maybe, maybe not.

But you just highlighted another non-QB driven factor that makes it harder on the QB to succeed so far. Thanks for the assist!

Try changing your world view to include the possibility that we're not all assholes :)

There's not one member here who believes anything close to the notion that Gruden is infallible or that injuries excuse Cousins for his, at times, poor play. Those are straw men.

Let's not forget this either:

To make game winning drives you need to be trailing. We haven't come out and dominated anyone yet nor have we coasted in to a 4th quarter

That's a valid point Mike.

Well.... we've dominated teams... but not for whole games. Especially in the first half.

And that's the frustrating part sometimes.

Get ready for a mixed metaphor! LOL

It's like in F1. During Qualifying the drivers are chasing purple sectors. For anyone who doesn't know F1, the track is usually split into 3 sectors, and as the drivers go through each sector they are timed. If I recall times are shown in 3 colours. White is a time that's slower than your previous best. Green shows that it's a personal best in that sector. If they do the FASTEST time of ANYONE through that sector their times shows as Purple. String together 3 purples and you have the fastest lap and hence pole position.

Sometimes you can get away with having a bad sector as long as you hit purples in the other two.

Currently the Redskins are in the habit of showing Purple or Green in a sector here or there and then wrecking the lap with some substandard times.

Like Philly, up 13-0 at the half. The Rams, up 17-0 at the half. Miami, up 10-0.

We've had runs where we've looked great and put up Purple Sectors ( or should that be Qtrs!)

But then we follow it with doing sub personal best Sectors and screwing the game.

Or in the case of last week against the Buccs we screwed the first half of the lap before banging in a couple of purple sectors at the end and just pipped them to Pole.

We need to see a game where we put together all the Purples. THAT is something we haven't seen yet, but we know they're capable and THAT'S the annoying thing.

We've seen them run well (games 1 and 2). We've seen them pass well (Latter half the Buccs game). We know they can dominate the first half. We now know that they can dominate a 3rd quarter and a second half. We know that they can cut down on the penalties. We know that they can pull off a special team miracle and that we finally have a great kicker.

It's time to try and string all those things TOGETHER now.

Might be after peeps get back from injury, might just need more playing time together as a team. But that's what they need to be showing they can do next. Start stringing together those Purples. :)

And Henry, I have to disagree, it's not 'kinda all about the QB'. The QB position is crucial. And if you have an absolute star at the spot, yeah, he can make everyone around him better and even carry a team to wins on his back at times. But supporting casts matter - a lot.

Sure. A supporting cast is the difference between, say, 8 wins and 12 wins when you have a bonafide franchise QB.

Without that QB, that 8-win team becomes a 4-win team, and that 12-win team becomes an 8-win team.

Right now, looking at the schedule we have ahead of us, I think we're probably looking at about 4 wins. I'm hoping for 6.
