Josh Harris Speaks... Commanders is permanent name.

How would that explain it? Vancouverites don’t like tourists or don’t like tourists from Washington?
Seattle fans aren't quite Philly fans, but they are pretty darn obnoxious or at least they were not long ago.

This conversation has me thinking of Kirk Cousins.

I didn't like the way Cousins treated Washington even if I believed Allen more at fault. So when he finally left for Minny I enjoyed his failures. I enjoyed that he came to a team one game away from the Super Bowl and never got close to replicating their success before him. Now though, I don't really think much about him or care about him. It's been that way for a few seasons.

Snyder will recede in my memory, too. Oh, when people bring him up I'll remember how awful he was for this franchise on every level on and off the field, but during the season or offseason, he'll become an afterthought. Frankly, he mostly is already.

My wife’s family are all Vancouverites. The Seahawks are their team as the local channels carry their games on Sundays.

Just like how I grew up a Redskins fan in Va Beach

That’s what I would have though.

I honestly wish I could be that way. You can’t abuse and neglect something I love deeply and then eventually kill without me actively loathing you forever. I accept what has happened including the name, but I will never forget it and will always be reminded of it when I see the logo or name in common everyday discourse.

I get that. I will never think well of him, but I also know that in a few years I'll hardly think about him at all. Heck, he's already past tense for me.

Sadly, there are monsters haunting my life today. Maybe my focus is just more on them.

Well said, NickyJ. It’s either that or it shows how easy it is to fall into the trap of an anusive relationship

I don't know what an anusive relationship is, but it sounds uncomfortable
I'll blame it on poor texting skills or auto correct, but we certainly had an anusive relationship with the 'skins during Snyder's tenure. After all, standard English words can't comprise all the various hells he put us through. Not even Dante could count that high.

Just read this and thought it was interesting - and funny.

The original owner of the Dallas franchise wanted them to be named The Dallas Steers, at first, but quickly changed that to The Dallas Rangers. And they were The Dallas Rangers as of Oct 19, 1959 per agreement of what would become the Dallas football team owners, even before the team was founded. Tom Landry was hired as head coach of what would be the Dallas Rangers on Dec 28, 1959. When the franchise was founded at an NFL owner's meeting in Miami on Jan 28, 1960, the name was still The Dallas Rangers. But soon afterwards the Dallas ownership group realized there was already a minor league baseball team called the Rangers. So in March of 1960, the ownership group decided the name of the team would be The Dallas Cowboys.

But five years later - in 1965 - the Rangers moved to Canada. And Murchison still loved the name Rangers and wanted to change the name from Cowboys back to Rangers. He put the idea in the local papers to the fans, and asked for feedback.

Murchison's office was flooded with calls regarding the opinions of the fans. Keep the name Cowboys? Or change it back to Rangers. Here is the breakdown:

Keep the name Cowboys - 1,138

Change the name back to Rangers - 2

Murchison is stupid - 8

:p

This is exactly where I’m at. I still convulse with the mere mention of his name. I’m hopeful it will fade over time, but so far no luck. It really hurts that the name of our team will always be a reminder. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy as can be that he has been sent away forever, but that name and logo for me is like having his picture on my refrigerator. Try though I may, I doubt I’ll ever “embrace” it. But I will learn to live with it because I do love the team more than I hate the name.

I’ve never been one to tell fans how to fan. We all deal with things differently. I recall spending the last several years of Dan’s ownership rubbing homers the wrong way because I couldn’t subscribe to their positive takes on the team, and found them laughable. They’d tell me I wasn’t a real fan, that I should stop posting, stop watching etc.

That said, given the gift of Dan’s departure and the delivery of the franchise QB we’ve been waiting decades for, if you can’t whole heartedly buy-in now - I’m not sure you will ever be able to.

I recall the night they had choppers flying over the team store and it was revealed the name would be Commanders. I watched the Today show in disgust and couldn’t believe that “We the Commanduhz”. Dumpy Dan and Tanya and her ‘tah dah’ revealing the new uniforms.

💯 rock bottom for my fandom.

My disgust for it though got watered down, right after the sale of the team, when my son and I attended camp and the vibes were just so high. Even with Ron, EB and JDR at the helm. In my heart I knew they sucked as bad as the name did, but I really didn’t care - the vibe from the fanbase was showing major signs of life for the first time in ages. Not because of a chance the new owner would change the name again, but because a new owner could bring class back to the team we all worshipped.

Then on Monday Night Football, on the road against the Bengals, 5 to 17 became a real thing. A star was born and another was rejuvenated. Probably the most electric feeling I’d had for this team since I was a child. My wife went to bed and wasn’t used to being woken up by all my emotion during primetime games because I barely cared. Only now it’s my son and I, both eyes wide open, jumping out of our chairs and fist pumping. We knew it right then and there that we had our guy.

It was that moment that the name became a thing of the past to me. I hope you all that still can’t accept it, find that moment one day.

Well, I think we can agree all of those things are wonderful. But none of them happened because of the name, they all would’ve happened anyway. We could have had all of this positivity, and also got rid of the Snyder stain. So as great as it’s been, it could’ve been even better. I’ll definitely get to the point where the name doesn’t matter very much, in fact, I’m pretty much there. But I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where I just completely forget about it. That’s just me though, like you said everyone should fan how they want to fan!

No argument from me that it could be better. I think there will be adjustments made to the uniforms and overall branding that should at least fade the Snyder stain. I also expect Lombardis which will likely crush Snyder’s soul, so that always helps to soothe the pain.

For the sake of arguing, I'll say it wouldn't be better because we would never have imagined a world without the name. So maybe we'd feel no more exuberant. On the flip side, maybe we'd be grumbling about all the BS protests we had to deal with throughout the playoffs that somehow the Chiefs skirt so our enjoyment would have been less? Maybe the clean break helped bring in a horde of fans who without the change would not have bandwagoned with us?

One thing I've experienced with this fanbase is that it is very talented at finding things to be unhappy about. I mean we had a very serious thread about whether or not we would even want to win a Superbowl if it cost us a chance to return to the old name (which may have been a valid question it turns out. It's possible if this team was 7-10, we'd feel good about Daniels' progress, but there'd be no explosion of ticket sales, jersey sales, etc. so maybe Harris wouldn't have been so definite about ending the name change issue.)

You're describing humans burgold, not 'this fanbase'.

As far as what's unique about this fanbase - well, they have been through one of the worst 30 years stretches of frustration, humiliation, and abuse in pro sports history. So me personally, I'm gonna cut them a little slack. When you haven't been allowed to have good things for so long, you may get a little greedy and needy when it finally appears the time has come for good things to happen.

Time heals all things. Washington fans seem pretty happy about most of what has transpired in the new era. Where they aren't happy, I think that'll ease up and lessen with the passage of time.
