I Guess It's Time to Talk about the Draft and FA

what bugs me about this is that I have always believed you build your team and then go get a QB, better to have a great Oline in place with solid playmakers and then draft a QB that you can bring along and learn your system Guys like Aaron Rodgers and Brady didnt start from day one and I think it shows in how cool under pressure they are. but both had pretty decent teams built before they got there.

Ry...right or wrong...I believe they think they already have some of the pieces of that O-line. they have next year to continue building it while a new QB does the apprentice thang.

We have a LT and not anyone else that wouldnt need replacing if based on right now stats, Brown could improve but he wants LT money and our interior line may be among the worst in the league. In my perfect world we would rely on our defence next year (RUNNING A 4-3) and running the ball by comittee, while this draft, we draft a pile of Olinemen and let them fight it out to see who is gonna start and who is gonna back up, then next year draft a young QB to groom after grossman or mcrapp takes their lumps behind a new and gelling Oline.

This!

To be honest, I wouldn't mind if we drafted interior O-lineman with 1 and 2. Unfortunately it will not be wise to draft O-lineman that high in this draft. The first one projects at mid-first round in this draft and there is only one guard/center projected in the top 20.

Unless we trade down, it just wouldn't make sense to draft that position if we are sitting at 7 or 8.

with ya 100% El....especially on the draft O-line in later rounds. we have our first round LT. As Ax states....more stuff to happen before we can make predictions comfortably....but...just for fun...I think we're going QB or DT in the first round. The former based on need...the latter based on need and availability in this next draft.

Honestly, I don't think our interior OL is ALL bad - the weak link is Rabach. If we find a replacement for him, it would step up the rest of the OL tremendously. Hopefully we'll see some of Cook these last couple weeks, to see what the kid's got.

Hmmm....got me thinking, there fansince. Would a 1st round DT choice make more sense-in particular one with a skill set that could be easily meshed into either a 4-3 or 3-4-in order to have a base covered no matter what the 3-4/4-3 debate outcome?

Of course, after it's announced that McNabb will be back next season, and we sign a FA NT, then what?

1. Keep the top 5-7 pick and select a quarterback to groom for the future.

2. Use the other picks to grab OL or DL (and don't give me this BPA crap where we select a TE in Round 5!)

3. Target one or two free agents that are quality 'gets'. My preference would be to try and grab a wide receiver and 3-4 OLB that are under 30 and can come in and contribute from Day 1. Santana Moss at 32 is a free agent and I don't want to resign him to a multi-year deal with a significant bonus at that age. He is past his prime and we need to be selling these players when their production and price intersect. At outside linebacker, the Redskins don't have anyone who knows how to play in a 3-4. Orakpo needs coaching but has the raw skills. But when you look over at Lorenzo Alexander and before him Andre Carter you see guys that are horribly miscast. Did you see how many missed tackles in the open field went against Alexander against Dallas? He was awful playing in space, a defensive lineman trying to get his hands on backs and TEs 8-10 yards down the field. If Shanahan wants to see an effective 3-4 he needs to bring in a guy who can be an example for the other players here.

What would you do with a guy like Zo then, Bulldog? DE?

With some serious coaching I think he might be able to play ILB in a 3-4 if schemed properly , he has the same athletic skills and build as Levon Kirkland who played that spot very well for the seahawks and Steelers, but in all honesty his best fit would be as a 3 tech or a base end in a 4-3 I think. He is not a good fit as a 3-4 OLB or a 3-4 end as he doesnt set the edge very well and he is more of a penetrator than a stack and shed type.

I wouldnt mind having a guy like that , some NT's can do it but few 3 tech types could, it all depends on the system and the players skillset, but that wouldnt be a terrible idea (if you could depend on the person evaluating the player)

I agree that Alexander should be able to cover the smaller box and more physical play inside at linebacker in the 3-4. He has played DT in the past on a spot basis so he has some experience making contact inside at the LOS.

Carter is obviously a player that is either a rush specialist on third downs or a guy you need to move.

The trouble from what I was reading on the WP is that Carter's contract is going to cost us $2.9M in 2011 IF we release him.

We won't get any cap relief at all for #99.

So, at 31 my guess is he is back next year to rush the passer. He will be the highest paid specialty rusher in the NFL.

At first, it seemed as though Donovan McNabb's November contract extension was was bringing clarity to his future. But with his benching over the final three games of the season, the veteran quarterback's future is once again uncertain.

What is absolutely certain is that if McNabb is listed as the team's third quarterback for the final two games of the season, he will lose $31,250 for each of those games, because his contract contains a per-game roster bonus provision that is contingent upon him being on the 45-man active roster.

McNabb isn't the only Redskin who may not be in Washington in 2011. By terminating or trading the following players between now and June 1, 2011, the Redskins can save the following amounts of accounted money on a possible salary cap:

• RB Clinton Portis: -$5,645,500
• LB London Fletcher: -$4,900,000
• QB Donovan McNabb: -$4,750,000
• CB DeAngelo Hall: -$4,400,000
• DT Albert Haynesworth: -$3,400,000
• C Casey Rabach: -$3,000,000
• NT Ma'ake Kemoeatu: -$2,500,000
• OG Derrick Dockery: -$1,565,000
• DE Adam Carriker: -$1,420,000
• OG Artis Hicks: -$1,400,000
• DE Phillip Daniels: -$1,250,000
• DE Vonnie Holliday: -$1,250,000
• TE Fred Davis: -$555,000

The 555 is the last year of Davis' rookie contract. Good trade bait there
