Fan, I have mixed feelings on the Haslett issue.
For starters, I'm not sure how many Skins fans know that when Raheem Morris became the HC of TB, that he fired Jay Gruden.
Now if Jay held a grudge, he would have fired Raheem immediately upon his arrival in DC. He didn't, and I think that shows some maturity.
Right after Jay was fired, Haslett offered him a job in the UFL. Mike Shanahan hasn't sniffed an interview since being fired from here, and Kyle is still praying to catch on somewhere. So I'm sure that there is some loyalty involved in this decision to keep Haslett.
Here's a quick, four question quiz:
1. Who is the DC in New England?
2. Who is the DC in Denver?
3. Who is the DC in San Fran?
4. How much does it really matter?
That isn't to say defense isn't important--it's very important.
But all of those teams above have some great things going for them. I believe if we're honest with ourselves, that we'll agree it doesn't matter who the DC is in New England. Ditto for Denver. And San Fran.
All of those teams have leaders. Winners. In the case of Denver, it's Manning. In the cases of NE and San Fran, it's the HC.
Those winners possess such extraordinary levels of competence, intelligence and the ability to lead others that they literally create success around them. Jay Gruden's entire career has been no different--consistent success.
Jay Gruden will help the defense himself. He'll do it with greatly-improved drafting. He'll do it by fixing our ST. He'll do it by coaching up our QB and receivers--giving our defense more rest and better field position.
He'll win over the team quickly, and inspire everyone around him--both players and coaches alike--to give their best each and every single day.
He demands winning. And if Haslett does in fact suck after all of the improvements above? He'll fire him immediately.
He's a bulldog. He won't tolerate losing.
