How the hell is Haslett still here?

All I can think of is that there is much more to the last 4 years of Haslett defense story than we know. Clearly we've had a depth problem and the cap penalty has definitely hurt us, but there's gotta be more too it. I can't help but think Shanahan played a much bigger role in defensive scheming than we've been led to believe.

...I can only hope :)

I'm willing to give him a year under Gruden to see if any of these suspicions prove true.

It doesn't help that the players obviously have zero faith in Haslett. That plays a big part in their failure.
Where are you getting this?

not much of an answer. but it is an interesting turn. generally, when a team tanks, the coaches are held accountable. no one is being overt about it - but all the behaviors and implicit messaging is that its on the Shanahans EXCLUSIVELY. I don't buy it. It smacks of good ole boys club.

btw...what dumb arse gets an HC job and then intimates he needs to keep a failed HC around to assist! Snyder's first reaction should have been: "ok. cool. but I'm paying you a couple million less since I'm not getting the full package. why didn't you tell me in the interview you have weaknesses and doubts that require keeping a mentor on staff? kids these days! I'll tell ya!!"

sorry Jay. You would have been better off keeping your mouth shut. you responded not only because the press asked but because you know the fans are questioning why there is a retainer plan for failure. a better answer, if we have to suffer through this SHAM, would have been "because I want him on my staff."

sounding the alarm: MD5....this guy isn't a fool..is he? Pls tell us he's sharp and not to worry. Pls tell us he is his own man and controls his destiny. Pls tell us he knows the difference between what he thinks is a good DC and a really good/superior DC and that we are where we are at because the latter simply wasn't in his e-mail in-box.

Haslett's defense played very well down the stretch during the 7 game streak, and as someone else pointed out, they played fairly well toward the end of this year. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that he didn't have full control, and see if his final year looks more like his first halves or the second halves of seasons.

Fan, I have mixed feelings on the Haslett issue.

For starters, I'm not sure how many Skins fans know that when Raheem Morris became the HC of TB, that he fired Jay Gruden.

Now if Jay held a grudge, he would have fired Raheem immediately upon his arrival in DC. He didn't, and I think that shows some maturity.

Right after Jay was fired, Haslett offered him a job in the UFL. Mike Shanahan hasn't sniffed an interview since being fired from here, and Kyle is still praying to catch on somewhere. So I'm sure that there is some loyalty involved in this decision to keep Haslett.

Here's a quick, four question quiz:

1. Who is the DC in New England?
2. Who is the DC in Denver?
3. Who is the DC in San Fran?
4. How much does it really matter?

That isn't to say defense isn't important--it's very important.

But all of those teams above have some great things going for them. I believe if we're honest with ourselves, that we'll agree it doesn't matter who the DC is in New England. Ditto for Denver. And San Fran.

All of those teams have leaders. Winners. In the case of Denver, it's Manning. In the cases of NE and San Fran, it's the HC.

Those winners possess such extraordinary levels of competence, intelligence and the ability to lead others that they literally create success around them. Jay Gruden's entire career has been no different--consistent success.

Jay Gruden will help the defense himself. He'll do it with greatly-improved drafting. He'll do it by fixing our ST. He'll do it by coaching up our QB and receivers--giving our defense more rest and better field position.

He'll win over the team quickly, and inspire everyone around him--both players and coaches alike--to give their best each and every single day.

He demands winning. And if Haslett does in fact suck after all of the improvements above? He'll fire him immediately.

He's a bulldog. He won't tolerate losing.

MCD5 is starting to sound like that Chuck Norris meme... :D

Not necessarily. It could mean the opposite. It could be his opportunity to relish the reversed roles.

I agree...there seems to be loyalty by keeping Haslett but Kyle was interviewed by the Ravens. They seem to like him.

Denver has Jack Del Rio who has been linked to interest for some of the HC vacancies this year and last. Some say he's done a masterful job with an under talented defense in Denver.

Vic Fangio is San Fran's DC has been one of the most rumored coordinators to get a HC job in this off-season...even here. Not sure if teams were jumping the gun to get a coach in and he never got a chance, but he has been linked to have some interest from several teams this year.

New England's DC is Matt Patricia and he has been getting a lot of press lately. Their defense was a top 10 defense this year and looked quite good against a solid Colts offense. And to say in Denver it's Peyton while discounting Brady in NE is...well, I don't know what to think.

I know you're trying to make a point but please stop with the snake oil! The DC's on all those teams have played critical roles. Those teams win because they have good coaching all the way around. And I think keeping Haslett is a huge mistake. Shanahan can be blamed for a lot...but Haslett should get no pass on the horrible defenses we've had the last 4 years. And for all who want to point to a 7 game streak and improved play as the season progressed...think about the 4th quarter melt downs we've had here on defense over the last 4 years...

Gruden is here. He's our coach and I will cheer him on, but please don't try to piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. We are talking about Jim Haslett. I know enough about him to know this is a poor move!

no it didn't. the correct response is that it played better than it had in the first 9 games. opposing teams still averaged 20 points a game. and that is with an outlier averaged in of one 6 point game against a HORRENDOUS Iggles team with a rookie QB.

we got to the playoffs last season because the offense killed. the defense managed to find ways not to lose games - so I guess we should be greatful for that!

MD5: asking for a lot on faith!

El has it covered on the DCs.

Of course we'll hope for the best. in particular, here's hoping Gruden truly is in a league with Joe Gibbs when it comes to offensive genius.

Defense? nope. We're stuck w/Haz. eh....enough. the whole thing played out kinda stupidly. but what the heck. on to other things.

Of those three Fangio is the only one worth anything. New England's D has been abysmal... If not for several miracle comebacks by Brady (including against CLEVELAND), they might be out of the playoffs.

Del Rio has done alright, but Denver's D has been lit up a lot this season, again with Peyton saving their bacon. The cowboys put up 48 on them!

I have just lost faith in gruden, if he thinks that we have seen from that moron is "solid " defence we are screwed. I dont care that shanny was calling the shots, (I said he would after the first season when we ran a lot of 40 fronts in the bears game and looked dominant, and then ran some abortion of an "amoeba" defence that most colleges wouldnt run the very next game, that shanny was pulling the strings and haslett was the puppet. You dont hire your DC based on being buddies, ffs, I think I need to stop watching football.

I will call it right now, we will improve slightly on defence if at all, because we were frigging HORRIBLE last year, if we improve at all which I doubt unless we add some serious talent, more likley is that without London covering up a lot of other peoples mistakes we will look more like this year when huge holes opened up and we couldnt cover anyone. get ready for another few years of garbage defence guys.

definition of insanity is doing it the same way everytime and expecting different results, you play defence with the players you have, not the players you would like to have. coaches who force players into holes may have short term success but it never lasts. lets just hope he isnt a moron as an OC. we are gonna need some serious offence.

Ryman, with all due respect, what did you expect him to say on his very first day, arriving to a new team?

"Man, we have a lot of problems. The QB regressed, and our STs are the worst ever. But our defense really, really sucked. All of these players and coaches blow, and I'm going to fire every single one of them!"

Come on. You know better. He isn't happy with the defense right now, I can promise you that. He'll get to work on it.

We haven't picked up a free agent, drafted a player, had a practice, or played a game and you've 'lost faith'?

Sounds like a personal problem to me. Try breathing into a paper bag.

Stud NT and solid MLB would give Haz a better chance to succeed before I write him off.

Want a mighty joe young type for the line and a Patrick Willis clone for Fletch's spot. I realize we're gonna need a lot more eventually but those 2 spots would be a helluva start.

Judgement put in action screams volumes to me Boone and I'm about as far from a knee jerk, reactionary Skins fan as you can get. It absolutely screams bad judgement to me if you retain this guy. So like Ryman I have zero faith in his critical thinking skills in terms of defense. I'm not hyperventilating, I'm fed up and I just see more disaster on the horizon and this is just another case of rinse and repeat. Why in the world should I have faith when I have been given zero reason to and had my nose rubbed in crap for the last 4 years? Sounds like YOU have the personal problem here, we have every reason to not only be skeptical but critical (let alone outraged which is absolutely justifiable) and haven't been given a single reason other than "JG is the new guy" for us to have any faith in the decision making that led to keeping a guy who's entire resume is below average at best.

I understand your all's viewpoints CounterTrey. I don't even disagree on Haslett - why would anyone retain him? But Jay Gruden is not responsible for one second of Redskins agony over the past 20 years - not yet anyway. I could not agree more that there's almost zero evidence Jim Haslett is 'the guy' to turn the Redskins (or any other defense) around. I've said it myself and obviously am in 100% agreement. I would have sent him packing just like you guys. But to say one has 'lost faith' in Gruden because he's keeping him around, that's pretty ridiculous - sorry. I could have made that statement without the snark, but making a judgment at this point in the new team's development, it does have an air of 'spazz' about it. The major problem I have with connecting all these dots (Gruden keeps Haslett equals Gruden is stupid or not in control equals we're doomed before we even start, etc..) is that we don't have enough information to do so. That's not to say that fans aren't sometimes right. And Redskins fans mostly have just had to predict the worst possible outcome each year and have a fair shot of being right :). But it's possible Haslett is mostly staying where he is because they want someone with NFL head coaching staff experience close to Gruden, not because he's a swell DC. They may have plans to transition him out of that role not too far down the road. And although I disagree with the premise and think it's the worst possible explanation for keeping Haslett in place, maybe he really has been hamstrung all along and will field a radically better defense without Shanahan lording over him and with better talent. I don't know.

But what I do know is, tossing in your hand before they've even had a practice because Gruden didn't dump Haslett - it's sort of silly. Not trying to be disrespectful and apologies if it comes across that way.

Either you're gonna give Gruden the benefit of the doubt for keeping a failed DC on or you won't. I can see reasons for doing either.

Personally, he gets nothin from me. Win games then we'll talk.
