Heresy or Foresight? - The J.J. McCarthy Thread

McCarthy can definitely drive the ball. I’ve seen plenty of those throws. I think it’s more touch and consistent precise ball placement where he’s well behind Daniels. Maye is a mixed bag on ball placement at times, mostly because of his longer windup which results in him getting the ball out late at times. Neither of them have the accuracy of Daniels imho, but I’d probably give McCarthy the nod over Maye on accuracy.

The conversation with McCarthy reminded me of Drew Brees first press conference after going to New Orleans from SD - he was all positive energy and focused on future.

To me, McCarthy is the most intriguing QB prospect in this draft. His anticipated rise up the draft board seems genuine, unlike the noise last year around Levis. I heard Gary Danielson talk about how Harbaugh compared him to Andrew Luck at B1G media day before last season. So this isn’t trying to push him up in the draft after the season, he said it before any games in their national championship season. There is something special about this guy, and I’ll be curious to see if it translates into success in the NFL.

You'll enjoy tonight's pod - a lot of JJ discussion...

Logan Paulsen today said on the G&D show that he would pick McCarthy at 2.

McCarthy is the QB who has clearly risen the most in the *supposed* rankings since the combine. Every year there are players who shoot up the ranks late. It's more common to see it happen with QBs for the obvious reason that teams are desperate to find a gem amongst the group and are more willing to risk being wrong due to the potential reward if they hit.

There are reasons to hope McCarthy is much, much better than perhaps pure measureables and stats might reflect. There is also higher risk simply because he doesn't hate elite traits in some areas and because he simply doesn't have as large a sample size by which to judge.

Paulsen has developed a little bit of a cult following amongst fans in the same way Chris Cooley is viewed, even though both guys quietly get it wrong as often as they look like geniuses. On McCarthy, I really am not sure who is right. Unless he ends up under center for us, I hope he isn't the 2nd coming of Joe Montana - because it appears his most likely landing spot is going to be in New York with the Giants, at least it's a strong possibility unless someone has him rated top 5 worthy.

If Washington selects Jayden then Robert Kraft will have to decide between Drake and JJ as to who to adopt as his next son.

All four of the top quarterback prospects (plus Penix) can play in the NFL at a starting level IMO.

What will end up separating the guy or guys that ascend to the top tier are the intangibles, that's why it's so important to know how these prospects think and what they value and what is important to them, how hard they are willing to work and their attitude toward coaches, teammates as well as taking and learning from criticism.

I remember Ryan Leaf yelling back at coaches in SD not to raise their voice to him during practice.

I remember Dwayne Haskins asking Washington to 'un-retire' uniform #7 not because he wanted to wear it in honor of Joey T or strictly because it was his college number but because he was building a brand of active-wear clothing that included the label 'QB-7'.

Then there was Jeff George, a guy with all of the physical talent in the world, but a nickel-plated head.

When a coach kept sending in plays he didn't like he reportedly came to the sidelines and said 'why did you draft me if you aren't going to run the plays I want to run out there?'.

This is one reason why McCarthy seems a bit like a unicorn. He seems universally well-liked and always seems to say the right things. Meanwhile, scouts and media types can question what his true physical upside is in a more passer oriented scheme, but at the end of the day unlike Daniels or Maye, he was a big winner at the college level.
