That looks like an amazing facility - but man, the Smith Machines need to have some lighter plates available, lol...

Those aren’t Smiths they are kind of olympic lift platforms. Deadlifts, clean and jerk, squats, etc.

I just got back from my 1st workout there. It was very busy due to a grand opening party and the $1 a month memberships for new members for 6 months. Even with the crowd it was more pleasant than the old one. Multiples of the most popular equipment. For example- I used to have to nearly always wait to use the multi-station for things like pulldowns because there were only 2, now 6. I’m a very happy camper!

My HS just had its 60th anniversary, and I went to walk through it for the first time since I graduated in 1995. It has gone through a HUGE renovation in the last maybe 10 years. Looks nothing like the dump it was when I was there.

This is the weight room. (There is more behind me with machine and a free weight room, but I didn’t take a picture of it.)

When I was there, the weight room was a converted closet with a few benches, free weights and some other crappy equipment which was probably donated.

Big difference.

I have not missed a workout day in 4 months. My test will be my impending retirement as now I will have to make the conscious decision to get in my car and drive the 30 minutes to my gym 3 x per week.

My new gym has a ‘recovery area’ that includes 2 Polar Wave machines (dry cold plunge), 2 Hydro Massage lounge chairs, 2 standard massage chairs, and 2 red light sauna booths.

Very cool Chris! I love sauna's. I wish my gym had one. I think a lot of gym's steer clear of them because they can be dangerous for some folks. But I love being in one.

Not really a fan of sauna. We have one in our house in Helsinki (the majority of the houses do as it’s a big part of Finnish culture) and I use it maybe once a year. Love steam though but alas. For me the game-changer is the water massage lounge. An absolute godsend for someone with a tricky lower-back.

I am about 4 months in to implementing my exercise routine (with tremendously generous help from Chris). I have gone from >200 lbs at times to 170 lbs, sometimes dipping into the 160's - the lightest I have been since leaving the USMC in 1993. My strength is greatly improved and my most recent milestone is being able to do dips unassisted. I have been doing a weightlifting routine (combo of machines and free weights) Mon/Wed/Fri with some form of cardio on Tues/Thurs (so far, mostly an hour on the stationary bike although I am subbing in a round of golf occasionally - trust me - the way I play golf there is some 'cardio' in it, lol...

I am focusing on decreasing reps/sets and increasing weight currently as I want to build more muscle. I may need to adjust my diet soon as I am not looking to get much lighter. I am preparing to add cycling on my off days vs. the stationary bike. I will burn far more calories on the real bike.

Anyway - this is where I'm currently at. I think it will require a little more discipline to stick with the gym schedule now that I'm retired and have to drive 30 - 40 minutes to my gym (vs. hitting it before or after work) but I am determined to make my routine a part of my life and not drift back into being a fat slob.

Anyone else working on their fitness?

You mentioned earlier that there was a larger facility closer to your home. Did you check it out?

Yeah. I went by a couple weeks ago. It's a huge facility - pools, pickleball and racquetball courts, etc... but the gym is small, crowded, and the equpment old. I was very disappointed. I am sticking with my current gym which is amazing.

I was but the knee just isn't taking it well. In fact, it has continued to get worse even after I let up on the excercise.

Anything that twists it, even in the slightest, hurts now.

I'm going to have to go see a specialist about but I'm putting that off until after the job change because my insurance will change (stupid way to run a healthcare system).

I'm honestly afraid this way more serious than I ever thought and it might require surgery.

Ugh. That sucks brother. I hope you can get it taken care of sooner rather than later. I have been fortunate. I have aches and pains that are just part of being 64 years old (and a result of some very physically taxing abuse of my body in the Marine Corps), but nothing that keeps me from doing what I need to do. Get better so you can get going fitness-wise.

1 more workout tomorrow before I export some American Muscle to Europe.

Man, I’m really gonna miss the new gym.

Today was my time to try to get back on the horse. After leaving Florida at 2pm on Tuesday to fly to New York (3 hours) then catching the flight to Helsinki at 11pm (8 hours) and facing a 7 hour time change…I have been in upside down world for a few days.

I went to the gym tonight at 10pm which is 12 hours later than my usual and was able to get in a very good lift. Now I just need to gradually adjust my gym time back to normal as I adapt my body clock to the time change.

I honestly have no idea how NFL teams deal with international travel in an accelerated fashion.

The odyssey continues 🥴. Jet lag is real and it’s not spectacular.

I got 4.5 hours of sleep last night and awoke at 5:30am (99 days out of 100 I get 8), mostly due to itchiness driving me f’ing nuts. Humidity in the house in Florida averages 65% under air conditioning. Here it is 15% with no need for a/c. It would be safe to say that it’s a tad dry here. My skin is in complete revolt. I’m much like a baby with diaper rash but without the mature and measured reaction that babies have. 😉

So by 8am I was on my way to the gym and there I banged out a great leg workout. Go figure. This broke every rule I have toward recovery management but, hey, sometimes you feel like a nut.

Apologies in advance but this may be a long and comprehensive post. It is mainly for me to memorialize for myself.

As a long time sufferer of lower back and sciatic issues, I have known for too long that I need to seriously address flexibility and mobility improvement. My problem throughout has been that I would rather watch paint dry. Strength train. Hell, yeah. Beyond that, not so much.

I reached a nexus recently where I was faced with two competing challenges:

The first was once again dealing with a debilitating herniated disc in the lower back (don’t ask me how 🤷🏻‍♂️) that happens on average about twice a year. This leaves me lying on the floor all day and unable to stand upright at all. Picture a 90 year old man to visualize. Pain is my companion.

The second is that I have an overwhelming desire to get back to the game of golf after a hiatus of about 25 years. Then I carried a handicap index of 10 and played 4x per week

These two competing challenges are absolutely not ideal partners.

So while lying on my back I made the decision to commit to developing a comprehensive routine to finally address these flexibility and mobility improvement needs.

After four days of lying on the floor in pain I scheduled a massage session with a talented practitioner. I experienced immediate relief but the next day the improvement was scant. After that there was some small improvement taking place. Four days after the initial massage I had another. Improvement with the back and the sciatica was improving each day.

Two days later I began my new protocol. This plan incorporated two main parts: a comprehensive Mobility & Core regimen and adjustment to my strength training regimen.

For Mobility & Core I am performing 2 sets of 10 exercises/movements that occur on non-strength training days. On strength training days I have devised a reduced version of 1/7 for a warm-up.

For strength training I have adjusted my routine to simply maintain my current level of strength and muscle, which is already really good, instead of continuing to chase more.

So far, so good. After 8 days of instituting these new changes I am today pain free and much more loose. More than I have been since my 40s. Seriously, no bs. It should only get better from here. 🤞

I have 5 months until I can get back on a golf practice range so until then I will focus intently on grooving my tempo, rhythm, and swing plane with 2 tools that I ordered from Amazon in Germany. A golf swing rope and the European version of the Orange Whip.

I am not embarrassed to admit that I’m pretty pumped at this point. Both to get to work on the golf specific drills and to continue on with the flexibility and mobility work.

I've never has any sciatic issues, but I have friends who have and based on their pain and discomfort, I hope that I never do. Good luck with that.

I have thrown my back out several times over the years. It's always something like bending over the wrong way that gets me, and once it goes out, it's out for a few weeks. Just an FYI that you can push through those if it's only a muscle pull. When I was 20 something I threw out my back. The problem was that I had a tennis match the next day and I had to play. I went to the doctor, and he injected me with Novocain in that back muscle. After 10-15 minutes for the shot to take effect, he then bent me forward until I touched my toes, he then bent me side to side as far as I could go. This went on for a few minutes and surprisingly when the Novocain wore off, I had no issues with my back the next day.

A herniated disc though is a different matter. Good luck with that one too.
