Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

I just got back from a week long trip to DC to see my visiting daughter. She insisted we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner together each day. My normal routine is no breakfast, a very small lunch, and dinner. I gained 6 lbs in a week lol. I was able to work out on my current schedule but will need to get back to my normal eating routines.

Update on the knee that is keeping from doing anything serious.

Had an MRI last week. What I now know:
- tricompartmental osteoarthritis
- knee joint effusion
- Baker's cyst
- undersurface tear of the medial posterior horn
- no ligament damage

I see one of the top orthopedic knee specialists in Dallas monday morning (he consults with the Cowboys). After 4 days of a tech convention in Vegas where I averaged just over 20K steps a day on concrete, I'm okay if he says it's not salvagable and amputates it on the spot.

Seriously though, at this point, I'm expecting a cordicalsteriod shot and expensive PT at a minimum.

Damn, sounds like a possible knee replacement might be the next step if the cortisone shot and PT don't work. Good luck with that.

The majority of those seem to be byproducts of the arthritis. Is the knee the only joint where arthritis has been felt or identified?

You can try glucosamine-chondroitin - it works for some folks but you need to be religious about taking it, and it takes time. Generally speaking, if you end up needing a replacement, it may start out with cortisone, or artificial lubricant injections. Those can help for a while. But once you are bone on bone in the knee, it basically comes down to pain tolerance. When you can't stand it anymore, they'll recommend replacement. None of the other stuff is likely to fix your issues, at least not for very long.

I've done glucosamine pills for my infectious arthritis and I could never tell if they really helped or not. One of our dogs took glucosamine for her arthritis when she got older and it seemed to help her.

It takes at least a month of taking it to tell a difference and I think a lot of people give up on it.

So 2 summers ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A year ago I was in an ambulance after being told I needed triple bypass surgery, only to be cleared by 5 cardiologists. In May I went for my annual checkup and my lymph node was swollen. Great, another summer of sweating out scary tests as I was aware that prostate cancer spreads to the lymph nodes. I also have a nodule on my thyroid that had been biopsied 15 years ago as my dad and cousin had thyroid cancer.

I wasn't losing sleep but it was definitely on my mind. 3 summers in a row? WTF? Well the ultrasound of the lymph and thyroid showed no concern. So I can finally have a summer. Bite me health care. Leave me the Hell alone, I'm too young for all of this crap.

That sounds like some stressful stuff brother - glad you got a great report!

I've had so many tests result in bad news I was kind of prepared for more of the same to be honest. I needed some good test results for a change. My doc said the blood work was good so she didn't think, lymphoma was in play and that was my big concern. I am aware that like prostate cancer thyroid is one of the better ones and highly treatable. But I didn't want to have to deal with that, obviously, so pretty happy all this is behind me.

Man, I thought I had it rough. Hopefully one day they can find the cure for cancer.

DGF - enjoy this summer of 26!

To the older fans you might want to ask your doctor about ARED's.

I was having eye infections which required shots in the eye for several months to clear up the infection.

After the infection was gone the eye doctor put me on these AREDS 2 vitamins for life. Two pills a day and my vision seems a little clearer since I've been taking them. No prescription needed and I get mine from Costco.

Were you diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration?

Yep.

L Subretinal Neovascularization & Bilateral nonexudative age related Macular Degeneration

So both the ‘wet’ form and the ‘dry’ form. I didn’t know that both could be present in one eye. Interesting.

I'm not sure how much age related it is either, at least with my case. My mom didn't have this issue until her 90's and my dad never had it. Not sure my young age of 67 did it either. The doctor said it could have been caused by multiple factors like steroids which I've taken a lot of for my sinuses over the years. I also was doing a lot of toking during this time, and I always wondered if daily toking could cause it.

It took 5 shots over 5 months to get rid of the infection and at that point, I didn't want a 6th one. Just glad it's over with now.

It seems the jury is still out-

Chris- would you mind sharing the mobility and core exercises you're doing for your back issues?
