Happy hour starts in 5 minutes
I am into day 3 of my prep for the Inpatient Olympics. I have yet to see any sign-up sheets but I’ll keep looking…there must be one somewhere.

Day 1- 2 miles with the rolling walker (not as much fun as it sounds)
Day 2- 6 miles freestyle walking
Day 3- 8 miles freestyle walking and 46 flights of stairs

I have no idea if I will medal or if they will play the anthem for me (doubtful) but I am feeling confident and ready… LFG!!,
 
You definitely deserve to have the anthem played for you. Crushing it. :chestram2:
 
PSA- This may end up droning on. (I’ll preemptively put in the TLDR tag to save you the time.)

Having very recently turned 67 and having gone through two stints in hospital during the last 6ish months, May for a series of mini-strokes (TIAs) and August for a ‘real’ stroke, I have been forced to confront something I never previously considered- I might just be human after all.

I have spent my life as an athlete, competitively until 51 (except for running local 5ks and being an age-group winner.) I have also been committed to training all along the way. As a natural ectomorph with bird-like wrists and ankles, I was drawn to weight training and started with my first bench and some concrete-covered ‘plates’ at 16 along with some Weider magazines.

For the past two decades I have built an intentional part my life around health; diet, training, etc. In the past two years I stopped drinking alcohol, not because of anything outside of how it contributed notable negative consequences to personal things like my sleep quality and my recovery abilities which outweighed any positives that it provided.

Today at this (too) ripe age, I am 6’0 and 182 lbs with 13% body fat and a BMI of 24.7. If you put a bag over my head and neck and provided me with some Hollywood lighting to mask the natural progression of skin quality, I am in as good or better physical appearance than nearly any well-trained 30 year old.

So here I sit dealing with the reality that no matter my efforts, I am held hostage by metabolic factors beyond my control. To be as eloquent as I can be- that fucking sucks.

I said all of this to say…If anyone here is going through a tough time now or is presented with a similar challenge in the future…I would be very pleased to try to provide any type of support that could help you.

Sometimes an unbiased and supportive ear can make a really big difference. Boone provided exactly that for me.
 
I think you should focus on the part where you are in better shape than 99% of the population, specifically those in your age range. I am blown away by your commitment level and how fit you are, and how you bounced back so well from your health challenges. I probably need to move on from alcohol if i'm being honest, at least limit it to social situations. That would really limit it because I'm not very social at all. It is just empty calories and getting a buzz at this point. I have taken extended breaks over the years so I know it is not a dependence issue, just a habit that doesn't add a lot in the grand scheme of things. You are an amazing human brother. That's what I think.

I do realize that I’m in an ideal situation physically, but…here I am.

I still have some mild level of hemiparesis (self-diagnosed) that has confounded me. Basically some minor balance issues. After reading through two respected medical studies yesterday they showed that up to 4 years post-stroke there is no improvement seen. I thought that improving leg strength would counteract it. The studies showed that not to be correct or a factor. It’s the changes in the brain that’s causing it.

So instead of striving to be the best that I can be, I have to come to grips with being the best my brain will allow me to be. 😑
 
After a rocky October that limited my abilities to attend training and work out reliably, back on track.

MWF - hour long weight lifting
TTh - Muay Thai training
SuSa - run and work the heavy bag

Yesterday the wife decided to join me. Put the kids in bikes and went for a 5k run. Got it in just a 29 minutes - not bad but not impressive either.

Once I get through the thanksgiving break I start sparring. If all goes well I’ll be in my first tournament late January of February.

From there it’s the amateur TCB circuit. Lofty goals but why not.

Class C of amateur is optional headgear, class B and A is no headgear.

Can’t imagine I’ll be willing to go into class B, much less a or beyond, even if I somehow happen to be good enough.
 
Got up and knocked out another 5k today
 
Wife and I ran a 5k today. So that’s 3 this week for me and 2 for her. She keeps pace with me which I didn’t expect.

Then spent all day fixing shit up around my moms house and cooking thanksgiving. I’m beat.
