Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

wow..that is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.

It's not that I cant slow down...its that I feel like I am in that weird "not running but walking too fast to walk" mode and its creepy. I think I am going to do the walk one minute for every 10.

How many days a week do you run? 3 or 4 with the 4th being the long one?

These days I just do three.

Mondays are a boring three miler. 11-12 minute miles.

Wednesdays are either a boring three miler, or if I'm training for something (or feeling saucy) I'll do speed work. Either intervals or a tempo run. This is the day I pick if I want to see how fast I am.

Fridays are long runs. Lately that means a five miler, but again, if I'm training for something or just feel like it I'll push it up by a mile a week until I get where I need to be. Anything over 7 miles is a big deal for me and I'm completely beat the rest of the day and absolutely HAVE to take Saturday off. Also, (I forgot to mention this) for any run longer than an hour I take a performance gel every half an hour (I use Gu, Espesso Love flavor ... find one that doesn't make you puke and buy a lot of it.) It's pure concentrated energy and gives you a little boost when you start to feel worn down. Take it with water because hydration becomes very important on long runs too. Oh yeah, also for anything longer than about 6 or 7 miles get some running socks. Cotton socks will give you nasty blisters. I found that out the hard way. :)

By the way, congrats on the weight loss! That's really impressive.

Since my TKD exam in June I've gained eight pounds. The Summer has not been kind. :) I've just this week started counting calories again. The kids are home with me for the next two weeks, so I'm not running much until school starts up again. The wait is driving me a little nuts ...

Ran our first 5K on Saturday. We thought we ran it in 43 minutes which really bummed me out since I do actually care some about time...its a gauge if nothing else that helps me push myself. But we were at the back of the 2nd wave of people let go when the clock started so we actually did it in 39. So if you count that time along with having to stop so my girl could use the restroom we probably averaged 12 minute miles which I am VERY happy with for our first race together.

It is really weird standing around at 9AM drinking beers with other adults and parents like its perfectly OK and nobody has a care in the world. But I guess you earn it...

we have our next 5K on Sept 13th for Wounded Warrior and I am going to see how many of my friends in SD I can get to join in with us.

Congrats, Mike. If you stick with the regular running you will see rapid improvement from there.

I came home after and had a BIG crash which kind of scared me a little...2 hour power nap and when I fell asleep all my leg muscles (*ALL*) were tight and stiff. But after I woke up, had a nice big glass of water I felt OK again.

Back on my normal routine again today...hoping the gym doesn't beat me up too much lol

Debating on what to do for a garage workout tonight. Figured alternating jump rope, body squats, squat thrusts and heismans for 30 mins. I'll post from the er later

thats awesome! thanks, man! that is a neat little tool.

our next run is Sept 13th...Wounded Warrior 5K. This one gives you a medal at the end...my girl is all about collecting those things now

well, Henry here goes your "ha ha" moment. Enjoy it!!

Last night we decided to try and just see if we could run a 5K in the neighborhood without stopping. We run in the evenings but break it down with walking inbetween to rest our legs, catch our breath, etc. well, last night we decided to just run and go however far we could.

The problem I think is that I am running in the mornings and in the afternoons I am going to the gym. So by the time the evening comes around a lot of my energy is burnt and dinner/evening stroll is just supposed to be a quick one in my book. I didn't know we were even going to try and run this until she said something. And being the loving husband I am didn't want to say no.

it started off OK, the first mile went in the books. The second mile about halfway thru my right leg from my hip to my knee on the back side started hurting...I pushed thru it because I thought it was just a "wall" and I needed to push thru mentally. Then I felt a little "pop" on the top of my right foot. Well, that stopped it all and I had to walk. we finished the last lap for the 2 miles and I had to come inside. 1000MG of Ibuprofen later and I am out like a light in my bed but I keep waking up to crack my joints..

"Mike, don't do your morning run. Whatever you feel you can do or whatever you think you can do, DONT RUN!" - my wife

OK, I walked the boy to daycare the short way...no big deal, we chatted and that was fine. On the way home, headphones go in, I round the corner, and the street is just begging me to step out on to it. So, light run wont hurt...cant hurt, right? 4 steps in "pop" again.

I am fine when I am not running..but something seems to be popping on the top of my foot. Nothing is broken, I have full range of movement. I think I just need to stop for the weekend..3 days of rest before the race next Saturday.

man, I wish!!

soon enough..

I have been a member of 24 hour fitness for almost a decade...it's been a part of my life and bills for a LONG time. Well now that I am married and all that junk we have figured out that joining the YMCA is cheaper for all of us. So this is my last week working out at the same gym I have been going to forever. Feels weird...very weird.

My gains are off the charts right now. I have been trying to go up 5lbs at least each week to see if I can handle it and this week I found that wasn't enough. I am not taking anything but my multivitamin and protein shake...I think my body is just craving it.

We have the Wounded Warrior 5K this weekend. I doubt we will beat the 39 minute mark we set with the last race but I will try.

KDawg and all, I could use your help. I am 41 years old, weigh 423 pounds, moderate arthritis in my back (Disk degeneration disease with narrowing of something or other) , flat-footed (not an issue when I was younger since I weighed less and had more muscle so it compensated for that), have multiple sclerosis, and work full-time about 50 hours as a computer programmer with 4 children and a wonderful wife.

I can barely move. My butt and back constantly hurt, until I am walking then my back, legs, and feet are in a ton of pain. I have been trying to be more active since summer since I re-finished two of my bathrooms, then helped a buddy re-finish his rental house, but after I do those things I cannot move. Last night, I was cleaning the house, doing the dishes, the laundry, cooking for my kids, and towards the end of the night I could not stand up straight to finish the dishes, I had to lean over since I was in so much pain, and it carried over into today since I have to walk about 3/4 of a mile from where I park to my desk at work, and I had to shuffle the whole way, back and forth.

I can't walk the neighborhood since it goes uphill, and it's not that I get winded, it's my body is giving out on me. I have stayed this weight for like 15 years...not gaining, but not losing either. I have had success with a low carb diet, but I need to stick with it. I just need help. I want to be a good example for my kids. At work, I work my tail off, but my kids cannot see that, and that does not matter to them. How do I do cardio when my body won't cooperate? My mind is willing, but my body is performing a mutiny en masse (pun intended).

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Also, please ignore if this is tmi, since I rarely open up like this, but the folks here are great and honestly, there is no shame in my game. I just to change.

dude, thank you for sharing. Know that a lot of us are either in the same boat, have been, and can totally relate on a level.

have you talked to a doctor at all? Is your heart in good condition? I originally kicked my weight loss in to gear by doing the medifast diet. Its very strict and hardcore but I was able to get thru the first 2 weeks of being hurt and ended up dropping about 40lbs in a little under 2 months.

I am no doctor but I would definitely talk to one or consult some sort of physician about what is up and the goals you are trying to meet.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mike. The weight you are carrying is no joke, as you know. You need to get a doctor involved first to make sure you can safely begin a plan to affect the changes you desire.

There are many ways to attack this but please make sure you're ready to do so and for the advice you will receive here and elsewhere.

BCS, I was up to 275 a year and a half ago and am now down to 200 (a little over, but... close enough :)), mainly because of Weight Watchers. It's been a fantastic program for me because it allowed me to step down slowly, while checking in online instead of going to the meetings. I personally cannot highly enough recommend it.

I did start exercising as well, and now go five days a week to the gym. Chris and Mike are correct, check with your doctor first, and then you might just visit your local Y and ask them for tips. You'd be surprised at how much some of those folks know and they are more than willing to help. Of course, Special K will chime in here at some point and give much better advice than I ever could. Listen to her and Henry :)

oh yeah, the Y is a great call there. I am actually joining them next week because they offer so much more than a gym does.

Thanks for all the responses!! My heart is good though my only thing is my good cholesterol is too low. I actually bought the family all YMCA memberships because I want all my kids to know how to swim. My doctor just sent me a note wanting me to come in for my yearly.
