Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

Swimming is definitely a great exercise!

Go see the doctor...when he clears you, you will have a million doors open for you that will help here. He will probably give you better advice as well..but I will always be here to listen and help however I can.

BCS, low carb and exercise works well for me too, but you are right, you have to stick with it. Weight loss, lower triglycerides, lower bad cholesterol, higher good cholesterol, less hunger, for me at least.

Definitely start with your doctor.

I recently injured myself and that's after nursing a foot injury for 2 years. I hope to get this cleared up though and get back on the wagon of fitness because I am 20 lbs heavier than I want to be and a good 10 or so more than is good for clothes/pants fitting well.

I did have some good results with a water and protein diet (no carbs at all, ketonic diet I guess) and lost like 5 lbs. I gained it back but I think it was more because this summer has been not much exercise (foot was aching pretty badly at times) and lots of drinking, eating and socializing. I guess that's why I prefer to be a lone wolf.

Best of luck on that diet. There is zero chance I could do without my carbs, gotta have my breads n pastas.

Did T25 the other night and legs are about shot, especially calves.

Did a spartyka 5k that benefits wounded warrior today in 36:28 with my wife and kid. It's a better time but it was about 90 out by the time the race started so it really hurt us on the course.

But as we're sitting there my wife says, "do you want to do that super hero 5k in 2 weeks?" As I'm drooling and gulping water down. She is hard ****ing core

That's actually good you have a motivator like that. My family is content to lounge around. I have to force my oldest to do T25's, usually hates me for it. Don't care tho, every evening I'm like "it's time bitch, get ready".

My daughters and I competed in a local open Martial Arts Tourney today. We did well (I won 2 golds and they each took 1). I always enjoy the open ones, its very cool to see and compete against other styles of Martial Arts. Its education, and often humbling!

Nice!

How long have you been studying?

I did a few different styles over the years. TKD, Ju Jitsu (Brazillian and Japanese), Muay Thai, and a little Ninjitsu. That was way back in my 20s. I stopped when we had our oldest daughter and didn't get back into anything until a couple years ago when I got into Wing Chun Kung Fu. Only did that for a year when my Sifu moved away out of state. then my whole family started training in a traditional southern shaolin style of Kung Fu that we have been doing now for about 16 months.

Congratulations! You are a bad***!

The Redskins' Back to Football 5k was fun. Great weather. I didn't get the fancy finish photo that Mike got for his run. Clearly the photographer knew everyone was better off if they didn't get me in any of the photos. Finished about 30 seconds per mile faster than I had been running in my neighborhood, so now I'm pushing myself a little more on those.

Washington Redskins Back to Football 5K and Play 60 Fun Run

Near the end of the run, I was plodding along at a steady pace and started to catch up with a mom and her son, he was probably around ten or so. When he saw me pass him he sped up and got way ahead. He then slowed down and repeated the same thing two or three more times. When we were nearing the finish line, he was slightly up ahead and his mom had fallen back. It looked like the timing was going to be such that I would pass him right at the finish, before he had a chance to react again, so when I got close, I leaned over and said GO, GO, GO! He shot forward like a rocket across the finish line. :)

Later on at the post race festivities, before the kids fun run, I saw Gary Clark across the way, apparently walking to where he and Raven Caldwell were going to sign autographs and pose for pictures. He was in the middle of various runners and families, no one giving him a second look. I pointed to him across the way and said Thank you sir!, he turned and looked, got a big smile on his face and said Thank you sir! And of course at that point people started to look at him to try to figure out who he was.

It's a fun race, hopefully they continue to have it annually. This was the second. Last year it was at FedEx Field. The kid/family portion looked like they had fun as well. If anyone is in the area or planning to be in the area next year around the start of the season, I recommend it.

Next up, and probably the last for me this year, the Dulles 5K/10K (5K for me) on the runway at Dulles Airport this Saturday. I had to do it at least once, just to get out on a runway and see what that's like.

I started taking Glucosamine about a month ago now and my joints feel GREAT!!

With that said, I can tell how I was running bad and compensating because my right hip and foot feel weird when I run with good form. I am now all about watching my form, making sure I am standing upright tall, and how my feet land when they hit the road.

I am going to go from 1.5 to 2 miles in the mornings starting Monday to see how that feels. I am finishing up the 1.5 breathing heavy but not gasping or out of breath so I want to stretch it some and just get in to that groove. Plus, its fun to run in my neighborhood and have the people recognize me and Lil Butt.

I go through phases with what I like to focus on. Lately I've been really getting into Olympic lifting and am loving it. I have to say it's one of the best total body workouts out there. Worked on full cleans yesterday and realized I have plenty of leg strength, but need to work on my core, it really shows in my form. So I'll be doing lots of core work now. :D

There's no particular reason I need to be doing Olympic lifting, but what the hell, it's something I enjoy and will keep me going to the gym. I'm all about that: do whatever physical activity keeps you motivated and moving.

all I can say is, for me, core work SUCKS!

Yeah. For me, I just always overlook it. I might do 1 or 2 days a week, but really, it's pretty much the most important component to sports and strength training and it should be hit most days of the week. Maybe by 2015 I'll have it up to 3 days a week regular

Started up T25 insanity this week. Jeebus I gotta long way to go!

You got this..slow and steady, bro. Keep going for it.

In my renewed effort to focus on core strength, I took my sister-in-law's power yoga class last night...and got my ass kicked. Granted, she is a yoga expert and her class is difficult, but I don't think I've felt that uncoordinated and unathletic in a long time! Oh well, I may have looked silly, but it was a great core workout. :D
